Subject: Mac Andrew

 

Kimberly called a few minutes ago regarding Mac's condition.  He was

examined today in Corvallis with an instrument that provided images of

his heart.  It was discovered that the bug he has had has eaten a

portion of a heart valve.  He is now in the hospital awaiting results of

further tests.

 

By Wednesday or Thursday, the tests should reveal whether the bug is

dead.  If it is, a heart valve replacement will be performed.  If the

bug is not dead, further treatment to reach that level will be

undertaken so the surgery can be performed.

 

Mac is not in ICU.  He is up and about in the hospital, and he feels

well.  His color is good, and there are no outward signs of his problem,

however, no calls or visits at this time.

 

I'll keep everyone informed of his progress, and at the meeting Thursday

evening I'll try to have a current reading.  In the meantime, please

keep Mac in your thoughts and prayers.  He and Kim will be needing all

the support we can give them at this difficult time.

The great adventure began early, (o'dark thirty) it was rainy and cold...

the Nobel ship was prepared and provisions were laid up.



The Captain looked at the harsh sky and scowled...

 

But the happy fisher woman beamed with joy and assured everyone that the sky would clear and it would be a wonderful day.



many boats filled the bay, competition was stiff



Suddenly, the fish was on and the fight ensued..



suddenly the first flash of the fish in the water...



and a second flash reveled its size



suddenly it was in the net...



then, in keeping with an old sea tradition, the Captain stabbed himself with the hook, to ensure further success



they continued to fish but could not understand why there fate had changed?
and then he pulled from his chest a ... BANANA! and the dreaded banana curse fell upon the boat and no further fish were caught.

"hot spot" up in Big Creek. Then he forced me to put some

Ace photographer Mac has provided the attached photo record of the successful Eckman Lake Kid's Day.  The CCFF, Longview Hills Fishing Club, ODFW and the Waldport Baptist Church cooperated to make this a very happy day for a large number of kids (my apologies if I've missed any other groups).

We had a great time at our monthly breakfast meeting at the Agate Beach Golf Course on August 7th. We had visits from old friends Jerry Gibson and Bud Roark and a very special treat for everyone was the appearance of Mac Andrew and his wife. Mac looked so well and so fit and it was really great seeing him. All that clean living must account for something, Mac!

Here's our report of a successful Boy Scout Merit Badge Program completed by the Central Coast fly Fishers Charter Club in Lincoln County, Oregon.

Central Coast Fly Fishers Boy Scout Fly Fishing Merit Badge Program

 

The Central Coast Fly Fishers, following the lead of the Federation of

Fly Fishers to share education through fly fishing, hosted a "Fly

Fishing Boy Scout Merit Badge Training Program" that can lead to the 

Eagle Scout designation.  CCFF VP Jack Maitlen organized this project, 

assisted by Scout Master, Steve Traber.

The scouts, and seven CCFF member/mentors worked together for ten hours 

studying and discussing nine of the ten Merit Badge Requirements 

outlined in the well written BSA manual,"Fly Fishing."  Subjects covered 

were first aid, setting up a fly rod, reel and line, a variety of knots, 

fly tying/fly uses, "leave no trace" procedures, proper catch and 

release instruction, good sportsmanship related to fly fishing, fly 

casting and a review of Oregon fishing regulations.

The scouts had to demonstrate sufficient skill in each area to have 

their Merit Badge completion cards signed by their mentors, John 

Sanchez, Mike Flaming, Tom Peck, Mac Andrew, Wally Flanagan and Alan 

Canfield.

On April 24th the scouts met with CCFF members for a Fish A Long at 

Olalla Lake where they completed their training by attempting to catch a 

hatchery trout that they were to clean, cook and eat after the fish a 

long (one of our members caught a fish that was used for this).

The Scout Master, the Scouts, and the Central Coast Fly Fishers members 

who participated felt this is something we would like to do with other 

Boy/Girl Scout or student groups.  We recommend this program to fly 

fishing clubs everywhere.  The Federation materials and guidance they 

give made this project much easier to complete than would have been the 

case if we had to do it on our own.

At our regular Club meeting on June 21st, Dean Hendricks, the “We Mak’em & You Catch’em” guy from Florence, and his partner Leroy Shotwell, gave a great presentation on their special hand made lures. Dean brought a great display of his selection of lures. He also gave a quick class on making your own personalized, special lure. We ended up with some real works of art. Also, we would like to give a special note of thanks to Dean for donating a rod and reel combo to include in our inventory of fishing equipment going to the troops in Iraq. (By the way, the shipment of fishing gear and dvd's has now been delivered by Wayde to the radio station in Albany and will be shipped to our troops next week).

We also voted to make Wayde Dudley “Special Projects Officer” and a member of the Board. Congratulations, Wayde.

We had a great meeting, as usual, and would like to give special thanks to:

• All who donated time, money, or equipment to the 2nd (and last) Time Around Shipment to our troops in Iraq;
• Bill Furgason, for placing 3 Experimental ODFW Mono-Filament Line Recycling Stations at locations on the Big Creek Reservoir Complex;
• Kevin McCarthy (K&M Construction) for donating 3 new Pressure Treated 4X4's, which made the above project possible.
• Mac Andrew for his special "gift" to Big Fish (grappling hook/Ninja, very hush-hush . . .);
• Greg Harlow of Northwest Steelheaders, who took time out of his busy schedule to come to the meeting to thank LVH Fishing Club for their involvement in the Kids's Fishing Day at Big Creek.

12^th ANNUAL ECKMAN LAKE KIDS FISHING DERBY             ( 16 May 2009 )

 

Boys Howdy >< I am here to tell you, that this was a “Hum Dinger” of a Day >> The Weather was Spectacular & the Event was very well Organized & Attended by many of our Coastal Families … All of whom had a wonderful time & their Children caught a Bunch of Fish !!!

 

As you know, to do this kind of Community Event takes a lot of “Boots on the Ground” >< In fact, it takes 2 Days of Hard Work & Long Hours to actually set up the venue. Suffice to say >< The 1^st Baptist Church Folks & other Waldport Resources are a delight to work with >>> Then there is the direct support provided by ODFW, who actually put the “FISH” in the FISHING DERBY (James Ray & his colleagues) >>> Then there are the combined efforts of the 3 Mid-Coast Fishing Clubs, with the Central Coast Fly Fishers leading the charge, supported by our own LVH Fishing Club & various members of the North West Steelheaders.

 

Allow me to recognize the various participating LVH FC Members for their Hard Work & Many Contributions >>>>>

 

Wayne Hill, Wayde Dudley, Frank Stout, Barb Dudley, Lee Fries, Bill Furgason, Larry Dale, Mac Andrew, Butch Minich, Brian Hudson, Tom Simpson & Me.  

 

Why do they do this ???  I can only believe, that to see the look on the faces of these children, when they catch their 1^st Fish must provide a great deal of personal satisfaction for each & everyone of them >< That works for me & makes me very proud to Stand with people like these fine LVH FC Members.

On October 29th several members of our Fishing Club assisted ODFW with a conservation project where trees were placed in local creeks flowing in to the Yaquina and Alsea Rivers. It was a very interesting endeavor in that these trees were transported by helicopter. The goal is to provide gravel beds, deep pools and rearing ponds with the hope there will be more fish in future years. Our job was to direct traffic to insure no one crossed under the trees as they were being flown over. Thanks to Wayde Dudley and Mac Andrew for providing these pictures.

For those of you who haven't read the results of the Alsea Fishalong on your e-mail:

Alsea Fishalong 9/27/07: We had 13 fisherman in 4 boats participate in the Alsea Fishalong last Thursday. The guide, Ryan Miner, had Bernie Cooperstein, Dave Dinsmoor, Wayne Hill, and John Pitaressi, Brian had Dick Garvey and Dick Billingham with him, Alan Canfield had Mac Andrew and Butch Minich, and Frank Stout was with his brother-in-law Rich. It was a good thing that almost everyone hit the water a little after 6AM while it was dark, because as the sun came up the boat traffic looked like an LA freeway on steroids. Dragging dead herring around was the order of the day (a few Blue Fox spinners were seen in use here and there), but fish production was truly slow. Dave Dinsmoor was the big winner with a 28lb Chinook, but the rest of the fleet had that faint odor of skunk! Also, as we came by, Ryan did emphasize that he might be " THE BEST GUIDE ON THE RIVER" as Dave held up the big fish - no argument from our boat!. I'm sure Dave will be glad to share his catch experience with us at his first opportunity. Very few fish were seen caught, and the best report heard was about one guide who claimed he hooked 5, and boated 3 using Blue Foxes. Inspite of the slow fishing, the cool morning weather cooperated and warmed up to a comfortable level as the day progressed.

The Holidays are a good time to reflect on our good fortune - our health, our prosperity, and especially our good friends. On Thursday, December 20th, the Longview Hills Fishing Club had their annual "Holiday Party" which is the last meeting of the year. Christmas time is about good cheer and getting together with friends. We had all of that at our meeting.

Some very nice, and justly deserved, remarks were made about Bud Roark's contributions to the Fishing Club. He was there with his wife, Mary.
Mike Samples made the long-awaited statement that the U-DA-MAN sign (which was feared lost) had been found and was resting comfortably in someone's garage.
Mac Andrew gave an accounting of his and Butch's experience helping ODFW with their fin clipping project.
It was also time for the presentation of the Second Annual Joe Longo Award. This time we were all thrilled to be honoring one of our special members, Bill Furgason. He was honored for his many contributions to the Fishing Club, the time he served on the Board, and his wonderful upbeat attitude which always makes it pleasure to work on a project with him.
Always a "guest of honor", Michelle Longo presented the award to Bill. She also spoke about her father, Joe Longo, and stated he would be proud of what the Longview Hills Fishing Club has become.
We want to thank everyone who attended our meeting, members as well as guests, for making it so special. We are looking forward to a very productive, rewarding and most of all FUN year ahead. Can't wait!!!

I need to report some "stunning" news to the membership of the Longview Hills Fishing Club.  In an emergency meeting of the club board of directors, we have accepted a directive from the Governor of the State to take control of the Oregon Department of Fish & Wildlife.  Citing the Club's efforts and hard work in the sustainability of fish runs, the Governor issued the directive to take effect immediately.  The board appointed club member and Joe Longo Award Winner CASEY DECKARD to head the Department.  In other related news, the board has hired JAMES RAY, from the State of Alaska, to return to join Mr. DECKARD as Associate Director.  DEREK WILSON was appointed to the position of Head Fish Biologist and BRIAN HUDSON was appointed Director of Angler Education for the State.  It was also decided to move the Department's headquarter to Newport.  All Fishing Club volunteers may expect a 100% salary increase in their next check.  AND, if you think this is not true, be sure to read the first entry on the Activity Schedule.

In other news from the area, we had a tsunami alert this month.  The biggest damage to Lincoln County was to the harbor at Depoe Bay.  The videos of the event were quite dramatic.  It is a wakeup call and certainly points to the need to prepare for such events.  When the BIG ONE happens, it will be a very much larger event.  We are past due for a
Cascadia Subduction Zone earthquake.  The last one was in 1700 and we usually have such a quake every 230 years.  It was great news that Lincoln City Police Officer STEVEN DODDS has recovered enough to be named the Grand Marshall for the Loyalty Days Parade on April 30.  I am sure we all wonder what has became of the shooter and hope the mystery is soon resolved.  The NOAA project continues to near completion ON TIME and ON BUDGET.  What a boost for our local economy!  It is great that our club Vice President LARRY DALE is now home and recovering.  Larry has be greatly missed and we hope he will be back in the groove to help with the club projects.  He is a great hand in helping with the club and community activities.  BILL FURGASON returned from his trip to Scotland.  Be sure to ask Bill about his adventures.  Maybe he can give us some stories at the upcoming breakfast meeting.

Looking back on March, we had quite a few Steelhead in the Schooner Creek trap.  The fish were passed upstream and we hope that we will see even larger returns in the future.  We had a great tour of NOAA.  It is uncertain if there will be any tours in the future.  Oregon State Police Trooper Heather Van Meter gave the club a great presentation on "Sport Fishing and the Law 101". 

Turning our attention to April, it will be a VERY BUSY MONTH for your club.  Your assistance will be needed for the success of the events that we have committed to help.  Beginning April 2, the Siletz Watershed Council have asked for help with the Siletz River Clean up Day to keep the river clean.  There will be free food and prizes.  Then that same evening, there will be a Sportsman's Banquet at Newport High School.  Your club will have a table there to explain the things that we do to the community.  We will show our club video "Fishing Forever" that WAYDE DUDLEY and MAC ANDREW produced and directed.  MIKE SAMPLES provide the narration.  If you have not seen this great video, be sure to get a copy.  On April 5, we will meet with ODFW at our Quarterly Meeting to plan upcoming events and projects.  April 7 is our fun and informative monthly breakfast meeting.

Then things really get busy.  On April 14 the 50,000 plus Steelhead Smolts arrive at the Palmer Creek ponds.  Frank Stout will be bringing his trailer to the site again this year and we will set up camp.  We will be watching over and feeding them while they acclimate themselves for about seven days before being released down Palmer Creek and into the Siletz River.  Then the next day our volunteers will be helping ODFW with installing a net and with stocking fish for the 1st ever Olalla Reservoir Fishing Derby and Earth Day Event 2011 on April 16 from 8am until 3pm.  The 2nd meeting of the month on April 21 will feature Stan van de Wetering from the Siletz Tribe telling us of the Tribe's fish restoration and sustainability programs.  To wrap up the month we have the Newport Loyalty Days Parade on April 30.  Officer STEVEN DODDS will act as Grand Marshall and look for Jake (aka WAYDE DUDLEY) and Elwood (aka WAYNE HILL) Blues in the Newport Police Volunteer's car.

WHEW, what a month it will be.

What a Fun Day it was for well over 250 Children ><  Every one of whom, were able to Catch at Least 2 Rainbow Trout, Play some Fun Games, Eat some Good Food & Be exposed to some Very Accomplished Anglers >>>

 

This was a wonderful example of what can be accomplished when a Dedicated Bunch of People all get together to achieve the Same Goal, which, in this case, was to ensure that all of Our Central Coast Children had an Opportunity to Enjoy a Fun Day with their Families, in a Safe & Positive Environment.

 

Our Good 1^st Baptist Church Friends, as always, provided the Perfect Venue, which was complimented by the cooperative efforts of Baptist Church Staff,  Members of the USCG Auxiliary / Sheriffs Dept., ODFW Staff & Members of the Central Coast Fly Fishers & Our very own, Longview Hills Fishing Club Team.

 

Our CCFF Colleagues handled the Casting & Fly Trying Venues; while LVH FC handled the Fishing Venue down on the Piers.
