In case there are some of you who haven't heard about Wayde's fishing trip with Hank Bryson, here it is:

FISHING WITH CAPTAIN HANK

I had the opportunity to go commercial fishing with Hank Bryson on his boat, Christy Belle. I had asked Hank last spring if I might accompany him on a fishing trip and he agreed to call me when the weather and fishing were better. On Sunday 7/15 Hank called and asked if I would be ready to go the next day. I said yes and made a few arrangements for the time I would be gone.

I met Hank at the boat slip on Port Dock 7 in Newport, Oregon near noon on Monday. We got underway before long and went to the South Beach Marina for fuel then to Trident Seafoods to get a ton and a half of chipped ice. Hank filled four boxes on deck and 5 bins in the hold. We had enough ice for 5 days or so depending on how many fish we caught. Hank lowered the outrigger poles and we headed under the Yaquina Bridge on our way west. We cleared the bar and set a westerly course on the Murano auto-pilot which is a very nice piece of navigation gear. Hank asked if I would watch the helm while he stowed gear and prepared the equipment to troll for salmon. I did not have much to do except watch for crab pot buoys and other boats of which we hit neither. I watched our progress on the Murano screen and ate half a sandwich. 3 hours later we stopped to fish near the north end of Stonewall Banks which is known locally as "the rock pile". The salmon trolling gear consisted of 2 steel wires on hydraulically driven reels. One had a 60# lead ball and the other a 50# ball. The lines were let down and a lured line was attached every 2 fathoms (12 feet). 4 lines were set on each wire which was also attached to the outrigger pole. The identical setup was on each side of the boat. I had the port side to tend and Hank had the starboard side. Hank showed me how to operate the hydraulic reels and told me the things to do and not to do. I remembered most of it. We used rubber hoochies and barbless hooks for lures and began trolling at 2 knots or so. We had 16 lures out to attract any salmon in the area. The lines are tended by standing in a small well at the back of the boat. We caught our first King Salmon before long. A nice fish. We also caught a few coho, ling cod, 1 small halibut and some yellow tail rock fish which all went back in the water. We fished till 9:00 pm and then brought up the gear and stowed it for the night. I believe we caught 16 kings that afternoon. I was pretty tired from trying to maintain my balance while managing the fishing gear. I got through the day without any major problems. Hank asked what I wanted for supper but I just opted for the other half of my lunch sandwich then went to bed. I slept in the bow on the starboard bunk and Hank made the table into a bunk in the cabin. Seas were pretty mild that night and I slept good except for hearing the vhf radio a few times.

Tuesday started about 6:00 am. Hank cooked us some bacon, eggs and toast. A good breakfast but I think when he is alone he mostly has cereal. With breakfast out of the way Hank checked our position and found we had not drifted much over a mile during the night. We each put out the salmon gear on our respective sides and began trolling for salmon. It was a long slow morning with only 1 king caught. Hank decided to pick up the salmon gear and head north to try for albacore tuna. We knew the area where some fish were from all the radio chatter. It was 5 hour trip. The tuna set-up was different from the salmon rigs. For tuna we set out 5 lines off each side of the boat and 1 line in the center. The lines were attached to the outrigger poles and had a hand line back to the tending station to pull the fishing line in to where you could grab it and pull in the tuna. The troll is fast at 6 knots and the lures are near surface. You can see the tuna when they get hooked. We were fishing with the stabilizers in the water which greatly reduced the roll of the boat. I still had a hard time keeping balanced and upright though. I often resembled a giant yellow ping pong ball as I caromed off various objects, Hank included, as the day wore on. We were catching tuna slow but steady and fished till near 7:00 pm. We pulled all the lines in, coiled the lines and strings and hung the lures in a fashion that should make it easy to put it all out the next day. We had 27 tuna on ice for the afternoon. I was a little concerned because my side of the boat did not look as neat and tidy as Hank's side. I did not want a huge tangled up mess in the morning when we went back in the water. We were back in the house near 9:00 pm. Hank asked if I wanted a hamburger but I was so tired I just ate a quick sandwich and went to bed. The water was a little rougher that night but I slept better and woke up less. A result of the days activities I am sure.

Wednesday started out again around 6:00 am. Hank fixed us bacon, eggs and toast. It seemed particularly good that morning. I was kind of dreading the trip to the back of the boat and putting the tuna array back in the water. I was pleasantly surprised when everything went back in without any serious tangles or problems. I was fishing before long at all. Hank pulled the stabilizers out of the water because many fishermen think they scare the fish. The boat rolled further and more sharply which increased my difficulty in trying to stay erect. We in tuna most of the time and pulled a few fish steadily. By noon we had boated 20 tuna but the sea was kicking up pretty good. The forecast 2 to 3 foot swells were more like 4 to 6 foot with wind waves to boot. I was having a very hard time staying on my feet and finally resorted to kneeling to pull the tuna lines in. I think near 1 or 2 in the afternoon Hank said ok, lets quit. I was exhausted and did not quibble with his decision. We had boated another 20 tuna that day. I took awhile to take down the tuna gear and get ready for travel. The plan was to go back to the "rock pile", spend the night and fish for salmon on Thursday morning. The weather was supposed to get better but we did not see much improvement. Hank said he did not care if we stayed out or went home and it was up to me. After some thought I said lets head in. I did not think the weather was going to improve all that much. We crossed the bar just before 10:00 pm and were tied up at the dock shortly. Barb came down and picked me up. My first commercial fishing trip was over. I greatly enjoyed the experience and learned a lot. I also gained more respect for the people who go to sea every day to make a living. Pretty hard work.

My final observation is that marine heads must be some form of punishment for past misdeeds. I won't elaborate on that one.

Spotting one of these while doing the breast stroke across the bay could result in a permanent pucker mark in your knickers. Ocean Shores is on the north side of Gray's Harbor...just north of here.

OCEAN SHORES, WA -

While the ocean vessel 'Dawn Raider' was commercial fishing for dogfish, this Great White was hooked in the mouth but only resisted slightly for 15 minutes before it came up alongside the boat to have a look; long enough for one of the crew members to slip a rope around it's tail !!! 'And that's when the s**t hit the fan!!. The Shark took off towing the 42 foot fishing boat backwards through the water at about 7 Knots. Just like in JAWS, the boat was taking on water over the stern and the crew watched in horror as the shark would actually jump completely out of the water at times. This went on for an hour before the shark finally drowned. She weighed in at 1035 LBS. It is suspected she followed a weak El Nino current into local waters in search of food. Although mid 60 degree water is considered ideal for these sharks, the larger ones can tolerate water in the low 50s.

The Bagdad Bait Shop is about to be replenished by hundreds of donated fishing poles from KRKT listeners all over Oregon, and now Omaha.  3 fishing poles used by National Champion OSU Baseball players will sent to Bahgdad on Wednesday. Mitch Canham, Mike Lissman and Daniel Turpine went fishing on gamedays while in Omaha for the CWS and their superstition was whoever caught the biggest fish, would have the biggest game, whatever works I guess. 

KRKT's Nate Gorman has obtained the 3 fishing poles and will be including them in the latest shipment to KRKT's Bagdad Bait Shop on Wednesday morning.

At our regular Club meeting on June 21st, Dean Hendricks, the “We Mak’em & You Catch’em” guy from Florence, and his partner Leroy Shotwell, gave a great presentation on their special hand made lures. Dean brought a great display of his selection of lures. He also gave a quick class on making your own personalized, special lure. We ended up with some real works of art. Also, we would like to give a special note of thanks to Dean for donating a rod and reel combo to include in our inventory of fishing equipment going to the troops in Iraq. (By the way, the shipment of fishing gear and dvd's has now been delivered by Wayde to the radio station in Albany and will be shipped to our troops next week).

We also voted to make Wayde Dudley “Special Projects Officer” and a member of the Board. Congratulations, Wayde.

We had a great meeting, as usual, and would like to give special thanks to:

• All who donated time, money, or equipment to the 2nd (and last) Time Around Shipment to our troops in Iraq;
• Bill Furgason, for placing 3 Experimental ODFW Mono-Filament Line Recycling Stations at locations on the Big Creek Reservoir Complex;
• Kevin McCarthy (K&M Construction) for donating 3 new Pressure Treated 4X4's, which made the above project possible.
• Mac Andrew for his special "gift" to Big Fish (grappling hook/Ninja, very hush-hush . . .);
• Greg Harlow of Northwest Steelheaders, who took time out of his busy schedule to come to the meeting to thank LVH Fishing Club for their involvement in the Kids's Fishing Day at Big Creek.
  

(We have become such an active club, if I have missed any "honorable mention" of anyone, please let me know so I can include them on our list. We do the best we can, but sometimes things slip by.)

Our special thanks to Bud Roark for doing such a fine job on this podium. Not only will it be used by the LVH Fishing Club, it will be shared with the Social Club and any other group needing it. Great job, Bud!

We stood there with the rain dripping of our hats; we shivered in the cold; and we sat trying to keep ourselves and our equipment dry . . . and, apparently, we loved it! I'm talking about LVH Fishing Club helping NW Steelheaders, CCFF and ODFW at Kid's Fishing Day at Big Creek on Saturday June 9th.

Since Friday was a beautiful, sunny day we had high hopes that Saturday would follow, however, it wasn't to be. We started at 7:00 a.m. and huddled under cover to enjoy the hot coffee and donuts (thanks, Greg). Then the small pool was filled with fish (for the little tikes), Butch and Bud set up to show the kids how to tie a fly, Alan and his group were busy stuffing fliers - and this was all before the kids came to fish. I would like to insert a note here: Jason, one of our recent grads from the RAP Program, was there at 7:00 a.m. and proved to be a great help to us. Good job, Jason! Rain didn't seem to stop the kids from coming. The big buses brought them to the park and then the shuttle bus was loaded up to bring kids and parents to the fishing spot. Volunteers were there to greet them all as they got off the bus, hand the kids their fishing poles, help them with bait, show them how to cast and (best of all) help them reel in their fish. It was so damp outside that Bud Roark had the envelopes holding his feathers seal shut! I have to admit that I had to quit about noon (I had all kinds of excuses) and some had to leave early due to other appointments (why didn't I think of that?) but most stayed the entire day.

As always, watching a child catch his or her first fish is a joy that is not to be forgotten. We all considered ourselves the lucky ones to be able to experience it.

LVH Fishing Club is first and foremost a Club where great people can get together and share great stories. Some of them may even be true . . .

However, we also have become a service club and, I think, a benefit to the Newport community. We should all be very proud of the work we do in this Club. With that in mind, we were all very honored when James Ray and Casey Deckard of Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife surprised us with two awards at our last meeting on June 7th. We received a certificate of appreciation for our help with the Responsible Angler Program with the Newport Middle School. As this was our first class since several of us received our Instructors cards, we were especially pleased with this recognition. James and Casey then presented LVH Fishing Club with an award of appreciation for all the help we have given ODFW. This award was in the form of a beautiful wood fish carving. We are in the process of getting it ready to hang on The Wall so keep watching for it! Congratulations to all of you for all your hard work!

LVH FC CLUB RECOGNITION

COMMUNITY SERVICE AWARD           (24 May 2007)

 

The Lincoln County School District, under the direction of Superintendent, Mr. Tom Rinearson, held their 2007 Retirement & Recognition Dessert at the Embarcadero Resort in Newport, OR. This evening ceremony was attended by over 200 Teachers & Administrators. It’s primary focus was to recognize the many contributions made by the current & retiring Teachers of the Lincoln County School District.

 

As a part of this Grand Event, 8 County Volunteer Organizations were recognized & presented with Community Service Awards, for the contributions they have made to support & enhance the challenging work being accomplished by the Outstanding Teachers who comprise the District Teaching Staff.

 

The Longview Hills Fishing Club was honored to be one of the organizations recognized for the work it has done in the Newport Middle School, under the guidance of the Oregon Department of Fish & Wild Life, by presenting a 7 session Responsible Angler Program to the EBD Students of that school. This is the direct result of the trust & support extended to us by Mrs. Eckleman, Newport Middle School Principal & Mr. Malcolm Koch, the Teacher with primary responsibility for these students.

 

Our award was received on behalf of the Club, by Brian Hudson (Lead Instructor) who has provided outstanding leadership for our 7 Member Instructor Team. Brian & his fellow Aquatic Angler Instructors are to be commended for their efforts, which resulted in making this 1^st time effort so beneficial to the students of the Newport Middle School. As an aside, Mr. Rinearson, a angler in his own right, complimented us by extending an invitation to have us bring the Responsible Angler Program back to the Class Room again next year.  

 

It is appropriate to note, that our Instructor Teams are comprised of various members who have cross club affiliations with the North West Steelheaders & Central Coast Fly Fishers. This exemplifies the very best utilization of our Coastal Fishing Club Resources to support the vital work being accomplished by the Oregon Department of Fish & Wild Life.  

 

Suffice to say, we are honored by this award recognition & very proud to stand with our colleagues who comprise the 3 Coastal Fishing Clubs within the Local ODFW Jurisdiction.

We had some friends visit us this week-end and we went to Depoe Bay on Sunday, April 22nd, for the annual Classic Wooden Boat Show and Crab Feed. All the volunteers were working like crazy and doing a great job, and wait . . . isn't that our own Mike Samples volunteering, as usual? Sure is. Good job, Mike.

Hello Folks……..I just came from Wayde Dudley’s Garage & it look looked a SNAKE PIT !!!!  Yes…..That’s what I said, you see it always looks a Little Fuzzy, but today it was a “Snake Pit.”

 

A lot of you fine folks have given the Gulf Troops some really nice Rods & Reels…but …we thought it would be best, if we sent them Reels with fresh line.  So, that’s why Wayde’s Garage looked Badder than Usual…….He was stripping off the Old Rasty Line & Boys Howdy…..he was doing a good job of it !!!!!!!   Now, I thought about giving him a hand (you get the pun), but things were going along “Just Fine” without the Old HOOK getting involved.

 

I did slow him down just enough….to realize just how generous you all have been about Helping Our Troops with some of your fine excess Fishing Gear. Wayde thinks we are getting close to having a shipment ready to take over to the valley….for load out to the Troops in Iraq, by sometime early next month.

 

We are shooting for a “CLOSE OUT” on this “Great Troop Support Effort” by the EOM April !!!!!  So Here’s THE LAST PITCH.

 

FIRST OFF….WE WANT TO THANK EACH & EVERY ONE OF YOU WHO HAVE BEEN SO GENEROUS.

 

THEN….WE WANT TO APPEAL TO THOSE OF YOU WHO HAVE JUST PUT OFF DIGGING AROUND IN YOUR GEAR LOCKER…OR…IF YOU ARE TIGHTER THAN DICK’s HAT BAND ABOUT LETTING GO OF 1 OF YOUR 18 RODS & REELS THAT ARE STACKED UP IN THE CORNER.      LET’EM GO !!!!   CONTACT WAYDE !!!!

 

Believe me Folks……It’s all we could do to part with some of our excess Fishing Stuff……It hurts a little to see it go…but…when we thought about where it was going & who was going to get a little relief & maybe a little fun out of it……It did’nt hurt anymore !!!

We had a great tour of the commercial fishing boats on April 19th. About 25 of us met at the docks and were able to view and find out about several different kinds of fishing boats from Captain Mike Pettis. Please note how great everyone looks in the top picture with the matching LVH Fishing Club jackets - very impressive, if I do say so. Dean Fleck, of Englund Marine, was also on hand to point out several items of interest. We were able to enjoy the sunshine, watch some fishing boats coming and going, and enjoy the sea lions swimming among the boats. As if this wasn't enough, we then went to Englund Marine where we saw a great video on the life (including the perils) of the commercial fishermen. I'm sure everyone who was there would agree it was an excellent tour. A special note of thanks to Mac for sending the photos, since Yours Truly forgot her camera.

THE LONGVIEW HILLS FISHING CLUB IS SETTING IN MOTION A PROJECT TO PROVIDE FISHING TACKLE FOR OUR TROOPS NOW SERVING IN IRAQ !!!!

 

WAYDE DUDLEY is the RAM ROD on this Important Club Project. He has solid linkage with Scott Schuler the Host of KRKT's Morning Radio Talk Show, which is an affiliate of Clear Channel Communications Inc.

 

WE WANT YOUR FISHING TACKLE FOR OUR FISHING PALS IN IRAQ !!!!   Yes, these troopers actually can go fishing in the "Big Sand Box." It seems Saddam built a bunch of man made lakes & they contain BIG Carp & OTHER FISH. This is not quite like Fishing at Home, but it's better than a Poke In The Eye with a Sharp Stick  !!!!

 

What we are asking each of you to do is to dig around in your Fishing Tackle for RODS & REELS that are still very serviceable. We would prefer equipment suitable for Spin/Bait Casting...Although a Fly Rod or two would be OK.

 

PLEASE DIG DEEP...This is something that provides a lot of "Stand Down" enjoyment for our TROOPS !!!!

 

All you have to do is let WAYDE know what you have got to contribute..You can drop it by his home and/or He will pick it up. All Club Board Members are working closely with Wayde & we will gladly take your serviceable tackle or pick it up at your home.

The monthly breakfast meeting was held April 5th at the Agate Golf Course Restaurant. We were fortunate to have Bill Lackner who, as The Hook says, "Really Knows His CLAMS".) He gave a great slide presentation and told us where and what kinds of clams to dig locally. We will also be having a clam dig with Bill later this month, so if you are ready to have a clam feed at your house be sure and watch for date, time and place.

We welcomed some new members to The Club as well as some returning "Snow Birds". It was great seeing new faces and some old familiar ones.

C.P.C. STAND DOWN

CAMP PALMER CREEK                  ( 1 April 07 )

 

STAND DOWN…………Today, was the last day of our 6 day vigil on the 50,000 Steelhead Smolt planted in the 2 BEAVER/DUCK PONDS on Palmer Creek. It was sad to see it all come to an end. Although, I am sure the 2 resident Beaver are happy to see us leave. What is worth remembering is that we left a very light footprint on the camp area & perhaps we will see these beautiful Steelhead again someday.

 

It is also worthy to note, that this would not have been possible without the 10 EAGLES from our Club who did overnight duty & worked so closely with our ODFW Friend Casey Deckard.

 

SPECIAL MENTION needs to be made about the significant contributions of FRANK & GINGER STOUT with their Camping Trailer & BUD ROARK with his Electric Generator. Take a moment, the next time you see these folks & give them a SPECIAL THANK YOU !!!!    THE HOOK
