REFLECTIONS ON THE KIDS FISHING DERBY - ECKMAN LAKE -- 17 May 2008

This wonderful annual event, sponsored by the First Baptist Church of Waldport, went off without a HITCH !!! The only way that happens, is when a very fine bunch of very dedicated people come together TO MAKE IT HAPPEN !!!

On Saturday, the 17^th - IT HAPPENED! We had beautiful Weather & a lot of wonderful Children caught a bunch of fish & enjoyed all of the many family activities made available to them compliments of the good men & women of the Church, Central Coast Fly Fishers, ODFW, US Forest Service, Parks Service, various Local Merchants & the Longview Hills Fishing Club.

A lot of preliminary, behind the scenes, work goes into doing something like this so well. It is most appropriate that our CCFF Friends be recognized for doing such an outstanding job of taking the lead with this year’s various Fishing Support Activities. A lot of Fine Anglers, from both of our Fishing Clubs, contributed Time & Treasure to make this event so successful.

One man in particular needs to be singled out -- Butch Minich. He clearly went Above & Beyond in his display of support for this successful Waldport Children’s Event. Butch is to be congratulated & both of our Fishing Clubs are very fortunate to count him as a member.

It is most appropriate, that I conclude by recognizing the many contributions made by my Longview Hills Fishing Club Colleagues. It always makes me proud to stand with each of you & I Thank You All ……….

THE HOOK

The LVH Fishing Club had their annual tour today of the commercial fishing boats in Yaquina Bay. Captain Mike Pettis and Dean Fleck of Englund Marine showed us the different types of fishing vessels, explained the current status of the Pacific Northwest commercial fisherman and all their efforts to sustain the fishery, and followed the tour up with a graphic video showing a great deal of what our fishermen go through (good and bad). Thanks, guys!

Also, we couldn't have picked better weather to go out walking on the docks looking at boats. I don't think we can thank Mike and Dean for that, too, but it sure made it a nice day.

Have you ever eaten at the Historic Anchor Inn? If not, there is a real treat in store for you. Not only is it charming and the food absolutely fabulous (with good prices) but they have the best waiter in the business. Wait, isn't that our own Mike Samples? Yes, it is. The only thing he wouldn't do for us is sing. Oh well, no one is perfect. Unfortunately, last night was his last night for a while as the Anchor Inn restaurant closes this week-end and won't be open again until after Labor Day. They are only open Thursday, Friday and Saturday night but keep it in mind for next fall. It really is a wonderful dining experience.

Gentlemen,

As you all know i've been working out of the office a lot and for some reason my connection to state email won't allow me to recall any of your saved email addresses so i'm sending this through Casey. The trapping effort went well again this year and i appreciate everything you all did. I'll summerize the numbers and send out last years records for comparison. I think at this point it is safe for us to discontinue trapping for this year on Friday May 9th. That is the trap should be opened up so any addtional fish can pass upstream without getting trapped. I will be at a conference in Portland until Thursday. Please contact Casey with any questions.

Finally got a chance to get out and do some fishing, joined some friends fishing the Willamette River in the Portland-St. Helens area, it was slow but I managed to hook and land this nice 18-20 Spirng Chinook. Hope Spring is finally here and we all can get out and do some fishing with out getting snowed in!

As they did last year, we will be met by our Good Friends Dean Fleck & Mike Pettis. Mike will give us a V.I.P. Tour of the various Commercial Fishing Boats currently operating out of Newport. STAND DOWN AT CAMP PALMER CREEK (2008)

ALL GOOD THINGS must come to an End & Today we (Frank Stout, Bob Abbott and Myself) Officially Closed Camp Palmer Creek for 2008, by removing Frank's Trailer back to Longview Hills. Casey will pull the remaining Stop Logs and release the few remaining Steelhead in the ponds.

SPECIAL THANKS to a lot of very fine people, for another 50+ Thousand Steelhead Smolts that were acclimated at the Palmer Creek Beaver Ponds and released into the Siletz Watershed, for their Run to the Sea. This is not without some peril. It is estimated, that if all goes well, we will see only about 10% of these fish return again next year. Be that as it may, This is the 2nd successful year for this Vital ODFW Fisheries Management Project. It would not have been possible, without the generous investment of Time and Treasure from various members of the 3 Coastal Fishing Clubs. As Members of the Longview Hills Fishing Club, we are very pleased to stand with and acknowledge the contributions made, to this worthwhile effort by our friends representing the Central Coast Fly Fishers and the Mid Coast Chapter of the Northwest Steelheaders.

I know there are a lot of photos to look at here but I am hoping you will find them interesting, especially the outing today with fishing at Devil's Lake in Lincoln City and then on to the Schooner Creek Fish Trap. I think we learned as much as the kids.

FYI - Hank Bryson gave me a copy of the the "Recreational management measures adopted by the Council for non-Indian ocean salmon fisheries, 2008". These are the ocean regulations for salmon fishing and they will be posted on the Board in the Clubhouse if you are interested.

Winter at the Schooner Creek Fish Trap . . . Wait!!! It's not winter, its actually spring (April 21st). Wayde and Barbara had trap duty this frosty Monday morning. We've seen more snow at the trap but never this late in the year. No fish, no elk, no birds . . . just snow. It was, as always, a beautiful morning even with the inclement weather.

Yes …. Tomorrow (22 April) is Earth Day & our LVH Fishing Club is Celebrating the Day by working with ODFW to Plant 0ver 50 Thousand Steelhead Smolt in the Palmer Creek Beaver Pounds, which are part of the Siletz River Watershed.

 

You are encouraged to come up during the week ahead & see all of those Baby Steelhead, before we release them for their run to the Sea……..

 

If that will not work for you ….Try this for EARTH DAY >>>> TOMORROW EVENING at 8 …. On the Portland Public Broadcasting Channel (10) …. You will find a most interesting program entitled “THE SILENT INVASION” which speaks to what is currently happening, around our state, regarding various Nasty Terrestrial & Aquatic Invasive Species.     Give this program a shot …. I think it will be an “Eye Opener” !!!!!

 

Now, about Saturday’s OPENING DAY OF THE 2008 TROUT SEASON …. This happens once a year …. So get on the “Band Wagon” and enjoy the 2008 Fishing Season >>>> Remember, always try to set a good example for our young Kids & “Be a Responsible Angler” !!!!!

We thought all of our LVH Fishing Club Members would be interested in taking a peek at some of the fun things we have been doing with the Kids at the Newport Middle School. ROCKFISH TAGGING TRIP 04/17/08

Not many trips left if you want to join in the fun. Linda Reed and Bernie Cooperstein went today and here is the report.

Just got home and shared my day with my husband Lou who can’t fish any longer due to his disabilities. He wants me to get out and do these when I can, perhaps for him in pseudo fashion?

Bernie and I were part of the Misty crew of 10 I believe?

Weather while cool was great and the seas calm in the morning. Come afternoon, the temps started dropping, the wind picked up and of course the waves and swells made me look like a drunk wandering back and forth when tagging and weighing cod.

Bernie and I caught so many fish we lost count after about 10 each. Never lost track of my fish before. Unreal catching instead of fishing day. LOL

Some small fish and special other species we had to release when we or the others caught them. Some died after being caught and became "floaters".

One man broke his personal Loomis rod in half during the afternoon. We used their Ugly sticks and spinning reels and the tangles were not bad overall with everyone today.

We were told they tagged 225 today and probably won't need to go out as much as initially planned to reach 3,000 tagged cod.

It was a fun day and we met some nice fishermen in the process. I would do it again if my schedule allows it?

Thanks for the opportunity to get on the "big blue" on a decent day with good people for lots of fun and a new experience.

It was an excellent day to be on the ocean; sunny all day and almost
calm seas. 225 black rockfish were tagged, and at least 20 other fish

Today the LVH Fishing Club took a tour of the Oyster Farm on the Yaquina River.

Just before we were ready to leave the Clubhouse for the Oyster Farm we had a pleasant surprise when Dick and Bev Garvey walked through the door! We had a nice visit with them and they joined us for the first "leg" of our tour as it is difficult for Dick to do much walking right now. Still, we were glad they were able to join us.

We had a great tour guide, beautiful weather and some samples of delicious oysters. It was a great way to spend a morning.

That being said, our Club has several “Irons in the Fire” that will require, over the next several months, significant oversight……..

 

To that end, I have asked Wayde Dudley, and he has agreed, to serve as our Operations Officer until November, when we will step back & review all of the Leadership Positions within the Club. Because we have such a busy schedule ahead of us, I have also asked Electric Bill Furgason, if he would consider stepping in to give Wayde a hand with several of the many Special Projects on our Clubs Schedule. I am pleased to inform you, that Bill has agreed to do so.

 

Now >><< I am asking for your support of these Temporary FC Board Member Realignments to get us thru to November. I will be speaking to this Temporary Realignment Issue at our next several Club Meetings. Yes it’s true >><< Brian just informed me that he was recently elected as the President of this fine organization. This ANWS Chapter along with our LVH FC & the CCFF comprise the “Big 3” Coastal Fishing Clubs, which work together to support each other & our good friends within the ODFW.  

 

Because of the additional responsibilities inherent in his new position, Brian will be “Standing Down” as our Clubs Operations Officer. The positive guiding hand of THE GENERAL will be missed. However, Brian says, “I’ll always be there whenever the Club needs a Trapper or a Fisherman.”  

 

On behalf of all of our LVH FC Members, I have extended any support our Fishing Club can provide, which might facilitate Brian’s transition to his new post. We are all very optimistic about Brian’s prospects for a very successful tenure as the New President of the ANWS Mid Coast Chapter.

We had, as always, a good meeting and breakfast last Thursday, April 3rd, at the Agate Beach Golf Course. We had a special guest, Brandon Hill who was there with his dad, Wayne.

Someone in the photo above is turning 60 this week, can you guess which one? (Hint: his first name is "Big" and his last name is "Fish"). I know we all wish him a great big HAPPY BIRTHDAY, and would like to officially welcome him to our "oldie but goodie" group.

The LVH Fishing Club had a great tour of the Georgia Pacific plant in Toledo on Thursday, March 27th. It was interesting, very informative and we all got our exercise for the day. It was also nice to have everything explained in such detail and to find out how environmentally and safety conscious that company is. It's no wonder the people of Toledo are so proud of it. Thanks to John Spangler for arranging this very special tour for all of us.

The reason for the two photos above is that a different person took each photo and we wanted to get each of them in. The trick of the day is to see if you can tell who took each photo. Look close now, one of them is in one and absent in the other . . .

3  April     (Thursday) ………….. 9 AM     BREAKFAST MEETING at Agate Beach Golf Course, followed by a possible Litter Patrol on Big Creek.

 

This is going to be a very busy month so we will be covering, in depth, all of the various activities. As you may know, the Siletz Trap suffered some damage. We will be getting some idea of how we will operate the trap, until repairs are made to the Bucket Transfer Cables, etc.

Also, at 4 PM today, we will be Kicking Off our 1^st Responsible Angler Session at the Newport Middle School.

 

 

17  April  (Thursday) ………….. 9 AM     SPECIAL …. GENERAL MEMBERSHIP MEETING

 

Back by popular demand >><< A Tour of the YAQUINA BAY OYSTER FARM >><< As we did last year, all members are encouraged to meet at the Club House for a brief Club Meeting, at the conclusion of which, we will form up Car Pools to get us to the Oyster Farm by our Tour Start Time of 10 AM. Attendees are encouraged to dress for possible inclement weather, in as much as some of our tour involves outside activities. This is always a fun event & as I did last year >><< I am giving my proxy for Oyster Tasting to Big Fish !!!!!!

 

 

22   April  (Thursday) …………. There are 2 SPECIAL EVENTS occurring TODAY.

 

The FIRST EVENT will involve PLANTING THE PALMER CREEK BEAVER PONDS with approximately 50 thousand STEELHEAD SMOLTS. As we did last year, we will be working with ODFW to “Baby Sit” the Steelhead Smolts for several days & nights so they become acclimated to  wild water conditions before release into the Siletz Watershed. Wayde Dudley will be coordinating our activities to protect the small fish from predation prior to their release. Dave Dinsmoor has offered the use of his beautiful 35 ft. Motor Home as a Base of Operations for us. STAY TUNED FOR MORE INFORMATION FROM WAYDE on this SPECIAL PALMER CREEK PROJECT …….. 

 

The SECOND EVENT will occur at 8 PM on Thursday Evening. You can enjoy this event from the comfort of your home. We had some very sad news today, both for the Longview Hills Fishing Club and the Longview Hills community in general. Lois Billingham, wife of Dick Billingham, passed away this morning. We are so fortunate in our lifestyle here at Longview Hills which is made possible because of people like Dick and Lois. Those of us that knew her will miss her and her wonderful smile but we know there surely is another angel in Heaven to watch over us. Please keep Dick and his family in your thoughts and prayers at this difficult time.

ANOTHER BLACK ROCKFISH FISHING AND TAGGING DAY. (Thursday, March 8, 2008)

Kevin and Wayde went out on the charter boat "Misty" and spent a day catching black rockfish for the ODF&W tagging program. There were 8 fisherman, 3 crew and 2 ODF&W. Together we tagged 404 black rockfish. I would estimate that another 50 to 75 fish were caught that were released back into the ocean. These included blue, canary, yellow eye rockfish, yellow tail, cabazon, lingcod, and sculpin. We were fishing just south of Waldport and about 3 miles offshore. The ocean was very calm with low swells, no chop and light winds. Another good day on the water.

The weather is improving and additional help is always needed from volunteers to support ODFW activities. Please consider giving these activities a try. It is a chance to get outdoors to some fresh air, see some great scenery, help the environment both for current and future generations, and make a positive difference. We also have a lot of fun.

FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 29TH

ODF&W has a program of tagging black rockfish to learn more about the species. Black rockfish are one of the few rockfish anglers are allowed to keep under current regulations. Most rockfish stocks are considered depleted and are restricted to "taking", commercial and sport. The program uses volunteer anglers to catch and tag the fish.

Some members of the LVH Fishermen's Club signed up as volunteers to help catch the rockfish. It seemed the least we could do to help compile species information to promote health fish stocks. It would only mean a day here and there of fishing the ocean out of our busy schedule. Wayne Hill, Frank Stout, Wayde Dudley and Mike Samples are 4 that I know of who joined in this noble effort. Wayde, Frank and Mike got the call for Thursday, 2/28 and enjoyed our first day of "tag" fishing.

ODF&W charters for 20 trip a year to tag 3000 fish. I am not sure what boats they charter but our trip was with Robert Waddell, captain and owner, on the Misty. The boat is 52 feet long, 16 wide and is comfortable for 12 to 14 people. There were 2 deck hands and 2 ODFW people on the trip. The ocean had 10 foot swells on 14 second intervals which is just a gentle rise and fall for most people and quite comfortable. No wind waves to make the boat pitch and roll. Frank was the only member of the excursion to succumb to sea sickness. He caught a few fish but then had to sit out the rest of the day which was too bad. We left the dock near Rogue Brewery at South Beach at 0700 and returned at 1500.

Troy, ODF&W, explained how the program worked as we were getting underway. We were to only tag black rockfish so all other fish caught were to be released. The fish had to be longer than 30 cm (12 inches) to be tagged. You unhooked the fish and holding it by the bottom lip took it to the back of the boat. A table was set up with a scanner to check for previous tags. After scanning the fish was laid on it's back in a fish trough and numerous conditions were observed and recorded, a tag was inserted under the skin just below the chin, the fish was re-scanned to record the tag and then released into a holding pool next to the boat. Any fish that did not swim down after awhile was lowered down in a cage to get them to depth. These fish have an air bladder that expands as they come to surface and it must deflate before they can comfortably swim down. The location of the fish is recorded by a Garmin GPS unit connected to the scanner. Each tag has a unique number so the fish is identifiable if it is caught and scanned. All information as to size, conditions, angler, date, etc. is recorded on paper. It got pretty busy at times as the fish usually bit in groups. The largest fish recorded that I heard of was 50cm (20inches) which is a big black rockfish. The group caught 279 fish that were tagged and released so probably caught well over 300 fish for the day. I saw one ling cod that must have been close to 4 feet that went back in. It was a great day and the weather cooperated with us. My back and shoulders are sore but it was worth it and I look forward to the next trip.

REPORT ON FEBRUARY FISHALONG

On Tuesday, 2/25, the Club held a Fishalong at Big Creek. John Spangler, Mike Samples, Frank Stout, Butch Minich, Keven McCarthy, Brian Hudson and Alan Canfield showed up for a nice morning on the reservoir. Along with Alan in his pontoon boat, three of us tried out boats that Butch graceously provided. Unfortunately, no fish were caught, which was a bit strange with all the different flies being trolled behind the boats, but it was a good float on the lake as the the sun came out. Just as were packing up to leave, a bank angler near the launch caught a 20" rainbow and then 2 more smaller ones. I guess power bait was King for the Day. The next Fishalong is scheduled for 3/25 at Ollala Lake. See you there.

This will be our 2^nd FAL of the New Year. As you may remember, our Central Coast Fly Fisher Friends recently held a FAL at Olalla Lake & they caught several Trout. This will be our opportunity to put their Meager Catch to Shame !!!! We left the Clubhouse about 11:00 a.m. on Thursday. Looks like Wayne is starting off the day with the story about "the one that got away" . . .
This part of Beverly Beach was pretty clean. We walked by the cliff on the way back and that's where we got most of our trash.
We couldn't get too far from each other or we might get lost. I think this is Tom Roederer.
Talk about footprints in the sand. Aren't these rocks amazing?
Here we are with our "booty". Not a bad day's work. The walk on the beautiful beach was just a bonus.

And I got to spend my day with a bunch of good looking guys . . . can't complain.

What a Great Day on the Beach!

The Beach Miester supplied us with Bags & Pickers …. Then he turned us (Tom Roederer, The First Lady, Big Fish, The Coach & Me) loose!!!! We proceeded to the Beach & had a very productive 2.5 Hr. Litter Patrol. I would estimate the 8 bags we collected would weigh in at about 200 + lbs.

Did we Save the World ?? No, but we “Put a Dent” in making our “Chunk of Beach a Little Better” than we found it & That’s what’s important. Special Thanks to All of You "Dent Makers" & check out the Cool BBP Pix above, compliments of First Lady!!!!!!!

Some of the members of the LVH Fishing Club participated in a project helping ODFW install some monofiliment recycling stations in various locations. We took the day on Tuesday, February 19th, and traveled to 5 separate sites. Hopefully this will help keep these areas clear by reminding fishermen to throw their used fishing lines in these containers rather than on the ground. It's always a good feeling when we can do something to help the environment.

Today, Wayde and I went with Casey Deckard (ODFW) to survey the 5 mono recycling station sites that LVH Fishing Club will be responsible for installing. We took photos to insure the poles go in the correct location. The first one was at the South Beach Marina boat ramp in Newport.

Wayde (being The Surveyor) advised Casey we would need to locate services before we dig to make sure there are no lines in the area, so this site will be done at a later date.

The next site we visited was Olalla Reservoir.

Then we went to the Canyon Quarry park site on the Yaquina River.

This next stop was my favorite of the day, Elk City. There was some history to be learned .

We marked the site for the pole .

And, best of all, we saw a mink (can you see him in the middle of the photo on the opposite shore?). It was a great way to spend the morning and we saw some beautiful country.

We didn't make the trip to the 1 mile marker in the Siletz gorge because we know exactly where that one is to be located.

We will meet Casey tomorrow morning at 9:00 a.m. to pick up the materials. There will be a work party at 7:00 p.m. at our house tomorrow night (Wednesday) for all who are able to come and help. There's not a lot to it so it shouldn't take long.

Watch for an e-mail blast from Big Fish on when the work party will actually be putting these poles in. It should be a fun day and, as always, the work will go faster the more help we have.

We had a great breakfast meeting at the Agate Beach Golf Course on February 7th.

A quick rundown which doesn't begin to cover everything discussed during the business meeting: John Spangler spoke about some of the upcoming events such as the tour of the commercial boat docks; Brian Hudson talked about the upcoming schedule of events; Wayne Hill spoke of the various fish traps; Dave Dinsmoor spoke about the SOLV bags at Big Creek as well as the upcoming Beverly Beach cleanup; Frank Stout suggested (along with Wayde Dudley) our club buy a boat the group who attended the Eugene Sportsmen Show saw last week. Unfortunately no one took him too seriously and the item was tabled for another as yet to be determined meeting; Wayde Dudley spoke of a project for ODFW he is working on with Casey and introduced a new member, Walter Chuck; and I mentioned there will be something new on Fish-de-Bay in the near future. Keep a lookout for Big Fish and his wonderful "blasts" on e-mail. All the information on this upcoming items will be forthcoming.

Casey Deckard, our good friend at ODFW spoke about the study he has been working on the last several months regarding the albacore fishery in our area. A lot of work went into this project and he shared the results as well as his methods of getting the information. The final report is not yet completed as there is a lot of information, but we learned a lot about this important fishery which has become very important to Newport.

We were lucky to have another good friend visit us, Dean Fleck from Englund Marine. He spoke about the rather sad state of the salmon fishery in our area as well as the state of the fishery along the west coast. He also touched on the marine reserve issue to let those of our group who were not able to attend the meetings last month what was going on in that area. Both of these are very important issues to all residents whether you fish or not.

As always, it was enjoyable, informative and a great way to spend the morning.
