Hello fellow LVH FC Members ……… We (the FC Board) have been concerned about what appears to be a continuing trend in the decline of Member Attendance at our Bimonthly Club Meetings & the general Lack of Involvement in other Club Activities.

 

Hence, our concern for what we perceive as our club beginning to show signs of >><< ATTENDANCE DEFICIT DISORDER !!!!!!!!  

 

As you all know, our Club's Ethos Statement makes it very clear that this is YOUR Fishing Club & the FC Board Members serve at YOUR Pleasure. It goes on to affirm, that WE ALL have a responsibility to support & contribute to the Club's Ethos as a strong Social & Community Resource, intended to benefit all LVH Residents & our other off campus Member Friends. This is a collaborative process………

 

We would not be doing our job if we did not address the A.D.D. Symptoms we are seeing & it is also your job to get more involved in helping to reverse this A.D.D. trend. To that end, we are asking you to give us some feedback, using the following member survey, so that we can attempt to better serve you & ultimately restore a fresh vigor to YOUR Fishing Club going into the 2009 New Year ahead:

2008 LVH FC SALMON DERBY

LONGVIEW HILLS FISHING CLUB >><< SALMON DERBY for 2008         ( 1 August thru 30 November )

 

Yes, Fellow Anglers >><< Even with the ODFW Fishing Limitations placed on the 2008 Salmon Fishing Season, we will be holding our Annual Salmon Derby for 2008, beginning on the 1^st of August & running thru the 30^th of November.

 

This year the Club will fully sponsor the Derby & will not require any entrance fees for Derby Anglers. As we did last year >><< We will be following the same ODFW Regulations, as it relates to fishing in our local mid-coast rivers & watershed. The Largest Bright Fish will be considered the Derby Winner, with the appropriate anglers’ name being engraved on the Derby Plaque, which is displayed on the LVH FC WALL.

 

Wayde Dudley will again be “Tracking” all fish caught. So it is incumbent upon all Derby Anglers to keep him informed of your catch. If your fish is not registered with him, it could jeopardize your chance of winning the 2008 Derby.

 

The Derby Plaque will be presented to the Derby Winner at our 1^st Fishing Club Breakfast in January of 2009.

Here’s the Deal >><< I am slated to go up to the Siletz Trap on Friday, the 18^th, with Wayde & Kevin. Today my Mary was informed that she needs to have an MRI done on her back .. Pronto !!!    We have been very fortunate to get an MRI Slot at the Corvallis Hospital for early AM on this Friday.

 

I feel strongly about getting Mary to Corvallis for her Medical Appointment >> but << I also feel strongly about trying to get some additional help for the guys that have Trap Duty this Friday. As you know we have been seeing significant increases in the number of fish running into the Trap. Hence, 3 guys sure helps to spread the Trapping Load …………

 

If you can see your way clear to fill my slot this Friday, I would sure appreciate it & I know Wayde & Kevin would too. Please contact Wayde & CC Me & Bill if you can Cover My Butt !!!!

What does a guide do when he wants to catch a fish? He hires another guide to take him fishing. Yesterday I had to chance to fish with a old friend and his wife on the North Fork of the Lewis River out of Woodland, Wa, there was four of us fishing alone with Tim and his Wife Shana. It was a great day to fish with friends. We landed 5 summer steelhead, avg day for Tim who's guiding on the Lewis this summer. It was a great day to sit back, hold the rod and let someone else drive the boat for a change. If anyone wants to hook up with Tim, let me know and I will give you his phone number, but he's booked for years in advanced, thats how good he is. Now its off to the BBQ for fresh steelhead and wine!

At the July 3rd breakfast meeting at the Agate Beach Golf Course, Wayde Hutchings (11-year old grandson of Wayde and Barbara) gave the report on the Bay Crabbing Trip in Grandpa's place. (See report on Bay Crabbing Trip below). Grandpa was busy at the Siletz Fish Trap.

Wayde & his grandson Scott Hutchings went to the Siletz trap with Kevin Bastien and Derek Wilson today. They wanted to check it on Thursday because Friday is a holiday and there are a lot of fish in the river. Mostly sunny in the gorge today and in the mid 60's. The trap was checked on Wednesday the 2nd and 50+ fish were left in the trap and 60 were hauled to Moonshine Park and released. The trap held 110 fish today with the following count:

Hatchery Steelhead

36 bucks 53 hens

Wild Steelhead

6 bucks 14 hens

Wild Chinook

1 jack

60 fish were released at Moonshine Park and 29 were taken to Lincoln County Food Share.

The temperature in the trap and at Moonshine was 60 degrees. There were many fisherman today near the 1 mile mark. 3 deer were seen on the way in this morning.

Bay Crabbing Trip - July 2, 2008

The Bay Crabbing Trip went very well. Wayne, Barb, Wayde and 2 grandsons (Scott and Wayde) made the trip. The weather was very good and the crabs cooperated. We were on the Misty from Tradewinds Charters. It is 52’ long and very comfortable. We used 12 pots and crabbed near the north jetty about half way out. There were 9 paid crabbers on the boat. In the allotted 3 hour trip we caught 94 Dungeness crabs and 6 red rock crabs. Many of the crabs were quite large and all seemed quite full of meat. Each crabber took home 10-1/2 crabs each. We had a great time, and I hope next time more LVH Fishing Club members can make the trip.

Subject: Mac Report

 

Mac came through the "Heart Test" in good shape.  Thankfully, the test

revealed no heart problems, other that the previously diagnosed valve

that needs repair.  This was good news.

 

He will soon have another blood test to determine the conditions of his

kidneys after the dye test (only two teaspoon fulls were used).  If all

is well he will then proceed to the open heart surgery to fix the valve.

 

Both Kimberly and Mac seem to be in good spirits, but your thoughts and

prayers are still in order.

This should be a very informative meeting, which will attempt to shed some additional light on the discussions the City of Newport is having regarding various water quality issues at Nye Beach. We have invited Charlie Plybon, the Field Coordinator for the Surfrider Foundation, to give us his perspective on what his organization is about & the Collaborative Advocacy his organization is trying to bring to the table with the various Water Quality Issues in our Coastal Area.

THE VALSETZ ROAD TOUR (22 June 08)

A RIP ROARING ROAD TRIP >>or<< THE VALSETZ PICNIC ADVENTURE !!!

Yes, there really is a Ghost Town called Valsetz & it would make Indiana Jones proud to unlock it’s secrets !!! BUT I am getting, 138.7 miles, ahead of my self ….

This adventure started with an early morning fog & 12 folks excited about the prospects of being Indiana Jones for a day !!! We had 4 different maps + GPS data & enough enthusiasm to drive the 4 vehicles we took into “The Bush” !!! …. Did I mention, wonderful secret Lunches, Tow Straps, TP, Jacks & Cameras …….. Yes, we were ready for what ever the Logsden Valley & Siletz Canyon could dish out !!!

Just after our Wagon Master (Wayde Dudley) called our 1st “Convenience Stop” at Moonshine Park, we met a fellow, up in the canyon, who got his truck “cock-a-meme” off the road. Well not to worry, Frank Stout & Brian Hudson hooked their truck up to him & had him back on the road in 1 Big Pull !!! Then it was up >> up & away to our next stop at the Siletz Fish Trap …. Several of us walked down to see the Falls, Trap Equipment & another Convenience Stop. Then it was back on the road >><< KAPLUEE !!! >>> That’s when Al’s new Toyota Hybrid blew a front tire, It was not to Big of a Deal, since we were not going very fast, but it did require a tire change >> which << was accomplished by 6 men & 2 lovely ladies. (Actually, Brian & Frank did most of the “Heavy Lifting” with the rest of us giving very sound advice & commentary. Although Jerry Gibson & Bob Abbott did pretty dusty !!) The rest of the trip into Valsetz was relatively uneventful, except for Bob Abbott continuing to tell us >>> If we did not get him there “Soon” … He would Starve !!

Arrive we did >>&<< What we found was a lone cement slab, that we conjectured was a part of the long ago logging operation. We continued on a short distance & found a lovely spot to set up our “LVH FC Lunch Camp” … Boys Howdy >><< That sure made Bob Happy !!! The Weather just continued to get Sunny & Warm & we had a delightful “Luncheon Repast” ……..

I should mention that while we were enjoying our lunch. An Oregon State Trooper stopped to visit & Ginger Dale invited him to join us for a Fish Fry we were planning on having as soon as Larry could set up the stove & stuff !!! ( Actually, I just made that up because … where we were >><< It was “strictly illegal” to do any kind of Fishing. However, after he departed Ginger came up with this fun idea … maybe next time !!)

The Wagon Master then gave us the option of going back, several miles, to see & visit the “Valley of the Giants” or splitting the caravan with some of us continuing across the mountain to hook up with the Kings Valley Road,which links with HWY 20 back to Newport. We had a 50/50 Parting of the Ways ………. The Bottom Line is that we All had a Wonderful Day & Special Thanks are in order for our Wagon Master Wayde Dudley >>><<< It was readily moved & seconded, that we should begin considering What ,When & Where our Next Rip Roaring Road Trip should lead us ……

ODFW announces coastal fall chinook regulations

Salem, Ore. -- The Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife today announced a set of one-year restrictive regulations for coastal fall chinook salmon in ocean terminal, bay and river fisheries. The temporary regulations include reductions in daily and seasonal bag limits and area closures to protect wild fall chinook.

New Sport Regulations for Bays and Rivers

The new temporary sport regulations set a reduced aggregate bag limit for fall chinook caught in all open waters in the Marine, Northwest and Southwest Fishing Zones. Anglers will be allowed to keep one non-fin clipped adult chinook per day and five non-fin clipped adults for the season extending from August 1 to December 31, 2008. These regulations modify current regulations that allow two adult salmon or steelhead per day and 20 per year in the Zones. Regulations for jack salmon remain unchanged -- that is five per day and two daily limits in possession.

Exceptions to these temporary regulations include:

• Current regulations for Yachats River, Hunter Creek and Pistol River will remain in place with non- fin clipped adult chinook counting towards the seasonal aggregate.
• Current regulations for the Coos and Rogue Rivers will remain in place, except to allow no more than 10 non-fin clipped adult chinook per season with five non-fin clipped adult chinook counting towards the seasonal aggregate. In addition, the seasonal aggregate bag limit for non- fin clipped adult chinook on the Rogue starts July 12 rather than August 1.
• The opening of the chinook season on the Chetco River will be delayed until November 1.

In addition, the temporary regulations establish new angling deadline closures for fall chinook in order to protect spawning fish. The new deadlines are for the Siletz (Hwy 229 Bridge at River Mile 38), Big Elk (Bear Creek at RM 5), Alsea (Five Rivers at RM 23), Five Rivers (closed), Siuslaw (Lake Creek at RM 30), Lake Creek (closed), North Fork Smith (closed), South Fork Coos (Besse Cr. RM 6.25), Millicoma (Dora's Place boat ramp RM 0.25), South Fork Coquille (Middle Fork at RM 5), North Fork Coquille (closed), Middle Fork Coquille (closed), Floras Creek and Floras Lake outlet (Floras Creek bridge at RM 5), and Sixes River (Edson Creek at RM 10).

New Ocean Sport and Commercial Regulations off Tillamook, Elk, and Chetco Rivers

The temporary regulations also retain limited sport and commercial seasons for the Tillamook, Elk River and Chetco River Ocean Terminal Areas. Daily and seasonal bag limits for the terminal sport fisheries will be part of the aggregate bag limit set for all open waters in the Marine, Northwest and Southwest Fishing Zones.

Tillamook Terminal sport fishery is from September 1 – November 15 with a limit of one non-fin clipped adult chinook per day that counts towards the Zones seasonal aggregate; the commercial season is from September 1-- November 15 with a quota of 500 chinook and a landing and possession limit of 25 chinook per calendar week and 28 inch minimum length.

The Elk River Terminal sport fishery is from November 1-30 with a limit of one non-fin clipped adult chinook per day that counts towards the Zones seasonal aggregate; the commercial season is from November 1- November 30 with a quota of 250 chinook and a landing and possession limit of 10 chinook per calendar week and 28 inch minimum length.

The Chetco River Terminal sport fishery is October 1-4 with a goal of 250 chinook landed. The daily bag limit is one adult chinook and any non-fin clipped adult Chinook counts towards the Zones seasonal aggregate bag limit. If weather limits effort, additional days October 10-11 and October 17-18 will be considered. The commercial season is October 5-8, 12-15, and 19-31 or a quota of 250 Chinook with a daily landing and possession limit of 10 chinook and 28 inch minimum length.

The return of fall chinook to Oregon's coastal rivers and streams is forecast be significantly below established goals and long-term averages. The exceptions are rivers in the Tillamook Bay system and the Rogue River which should be near established goals.

In addition to meeting conservation needs the restrictions are necessary to assist in meeting spawning escapement goals outlined in the new chinook agreement under the US/Canada Pacific Salmon Treaty.

CRAB LOVERS, READ THIS!

BAY CRABBERS ALERT

We have a date set for the bay crabbing trip - Wednesday, July 2nd at 1130. Check in and pay at 1100. You will need a shellfish license if you pay $41 and share the crab that is caught. However, $20.50 will get you a fun boat ride and a chance to heckle your friends, but no crab (unless you can talk one of your friends into sharing some of their crab). Please let any Board member know if you want to participate in this fun event. The tentative plan is to have a Crab Feed at the Clubhouse after the trip. The LVH Fishermen's Club will supply the coleslaw and bread. Please e-mail me at duright1@charter.net if you would like to join in the activities, and let me know if you would like to crab, ride, or eat (any one or two of the three) so we can get an accurate head count.

It is with great sadness all of us in the LVH Fishing Club note the passing of our dear friend, Rod “Coach” McCready. Our thoughts and prayers go out to Lee Anne and her family. Wouldn't it be something if we could all be remembered the way we will remember Coach – always with his beautiful smile, wonderful laugh and helping hand? He will be missed and we are glad for our memories of him.

Lincoln County Coastwatchers:

An oceanographic instrument package went adrift on Friday night and may wash up in the next few days, if it hasn't already. The attachment shows probable trajectories based on surface currents. We expect it will end up somewhere between Waldport and Coos Bay. It has a black aluminum frame and yellow body panels. It's about 5 ft tall, 3 ft long and 1 ft thick.

If you see it, please call me, or contact one of the OSU or WET Labs people listed on the flyer.

Subject: Mac Andrew

 

Kimberly called a few minutes ago regarding Mac's condition.  He was

examined today in Corvallis with an instrument that provided images of

his heart.  It was discovered that the bug he has had has eaten a

portion of a heart valve.  He is now in the hospital awaiting results of

further tests.

 

By Wednesday or Thursday, the tests should reveal whether the bug is

dead.  If it is, a heart valve replacement will be performed.  If the

bug is not dead, further treatment to reach that level will be

undertaken so the surgery can be performed.

 

Mac is not in ICU.  He is up and about in the hospital, and he feels

well.  His color is good, and there are no outward signs of his problem,

however, no calls or visits at this time.

 

I'll keep everyone informed of his progress, and at the meeting Thursday

evening I'll try to have a current reading.  In the meantime, please

keep Mac in your thoughts and prayers.  He and Kim will be needing all

the support we can give them at this difficult time.

BIG CREEK "3" ........

3ed ANNUAL BIG CREEK KIDS FREE FISHING DAY ……… (7 June 2008)

 

WHAT A DAY >><<  Full of Smiles & Glee from well over 200 Very Happy & sometimes Damp Children & their parents !!!!

 

This was another very successful year for our Good “North West Steelheader” Friends who were the Prime Sponsors of this terrific Newport Community Event. Many People & Organizations contributed to this wonderful day. I am proud to say, that our LVH Fishing Club & Members of the Central Coast Fly Fishers + several of our Newport Police Volunteers were very involved in this successful ANWS/ODFW Event.

 

It is appropriate to recognize Brian Hudson as the New ANWS Chapter President / Fishing Site Leader & his colleagues: Greg Harlow, who was the Overall Event Coordinator & James Ray + Casey Deckard, who represented ODFW. These 4 fine men did an outstanding job of keeping all of us “On the Right Track >>> Which was to ensure that All of the Children attending this event Caught a Fish & had a Wonderful Time !!!!!!!

4    June     Wednesday ……… 4 PM to 6 PM    ROD PREP FOR BIG CREEK KIDS FISHING DAY  (7 June 2008)

 

We sure could use about 2 hours of your valuable time to help us prep several of the Rods recently used at the successful Eckman Lake Kids Fishing Event. Most of the rods are in good shape, but we want to check all of them just to be sure. We will meet at the Club House about 3:30 PM & car pool over to the ODFW Storage Shed to do our work. We will look foreword to your company at our Monthly Breakfast Meeting, which is prepared for us by our good friends at the Agate Beach Golf Course Restaurant. Feel free to bring a friend & join us for some fun “Fish’in Talk” !!!!

 

6  June      Friday……………7 AM to Noon     NET PLACEMENT & FISH PLANT FOR THE BIG CREEK KIDS FISHING DAY

 

We will meet at the Club House about 7 AM & carpool over to Big Creek to arrive about 8 AM. This morning activity will involve placing a large fish net impoundment in place & then about 10 AM helping ODFW plant the impoundment with fish for the kids to catch on the following day.

 

7  June     Saturday………..7 AM to 2 PM       ANNUAL>><< NEWPORT ><<  BIG CREEK KIDS FISHING DAY

 

All “Rod Wranglers” will meet at the Club House about 7 AM >>&<<  Get to Big Creek before the Event Start Time of 8 AM……This is the Fun Part of the week. Our Fishing Club along with the Central Coast Fly Fishers will be working closely with & supporting our North West Steelheader & ODFW Friends who are the Prime Sponsors of this Annual Newport Kids Fishing Day Event. This successful North West Steelheaders Event is open to & benefits all of our Central Coast Children. Please consider joining us for this most rewarding & worthwhile community event.  

 

19  June   Thursday……….9 AM           GENERAL MEMBERSHIP MEETING &  USCG STATION TOUR

 

We will conduct a brief business meeting & then form car pools to get us over to the US Coast Guard Station by 10 AM. Don’t miss this fun >> “Back by Popular Demand” << tour !!!! This is also a very nice way for us to Thank our Good Coast Guard Friends for always being there for us when we go out to Sea in our Boats ………

 

22  June   Saturday……….8:30 AM     THE VALSETZ ROAD TOUR & PICNIC

 

What we hope to do is meet up at the Club House about 8:30 AM & then drive up thru the Logsden Valley, following the Siletz River, up into the canyon, to its headwaters which emanate close to the abandoned logging town of Valsetz. As you know there has been some talk about rebuilding a dam on what used to be an old original dam site up there. This is very rugged & pretty country & it should be fun to have a picnic at the old town site. We will point out where one “Could Go” to see one of Oregon’s last stands of “Old Growth Timber”…. The challenge in seeing this is that it is a bit off the beaten path & a difficult hike to get into the Timber Stand. Be that as it may, do not worry about the road conditions, 2 wheel drive is all you will need. However, you can expect lots of dust, in some places & it would be a real good idea to have a FULL FUEL TANK !!!!  Don’t miss this Rip Roaring Road Trip Adventure ……..    (You may also want to ensure your FRS Radio is Charged for this Trip)

The biggest, so far, occurred during a lingcod trip by several Winchester Bay anglers to Charleston where Rich Olson used a four ounce lead jighead and a plastic worm to dredge up a 60-inch halibut out of 130 feet of water.

According to Larry Scott, one of the anglers fishing out of Tom Roden’s boat, the lunker halibut weighed 115 pounds, according to the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife formula for figuring a halibut’s rough weight based upon length."

HIP >>> HIP >>> Hurray !!!!     Boys Howdy, we really had a GREAT GARAGE SALE yesterday !!!     I have just been informed by Ducks/Frank Stout, our trusty Administrative Officer, that our Coffee Fund is in “Jam Up & Jelly Tight” shape for another year ……

 

Frank says, going into the Sale yesterday, we had $353.66 in the Coffee Can & “You better set down for this” …. After the Sale, we now have $896.71 in the Old Coffee Can !!!!

 

Yes Sir >>< That’s a $543.05 Increase …. Special Thanks to All of You who so generously donated “Good Stuff” to help make our Sale so successful. Of course, we have to recognize “The Worlds Greatest Brownie Maker” First Lady/Barb Dudley & our New Operations Officer, Surveyor/Wayde Dudley………..

 

These 2 wonderful people, for the second year, have made their Drive Way available to the Fishing Club, so we can join with our Longview Hills Neighbors to make this such a Fun & Profitable Community Event. We also want to recognize Ducks for staying with us all day. In addition to being a very fine Wood Carver, we also found out he is a Darn Good Salesman !!!!

Wayde just delivered the proceeds from today's garage sale...$543.05!!!. That doubled last year's income. Now I won't have to take out a second mortgage on my home. Great job everyone and I sure want to thank all those that contributed to the sale.

AAP CLASS of 2008 GRADUATION .....

CASTING BREAD UPON THE WATER -- AAP GRADUATION OF THE CLASS OF 2008!!!!!!!!!

What a wonderful time we had, yesterday afternoon, working with & ultimately Graduating 14 Aquatic Angler Program Boys & Girls at the Newport Middle School. As you may remember, this is our Fishing Club's 2^nd Year presenting this worthwhile ODFW Program designed to encourage young children to “Get out of Doors & Just Do It” -- as Responsible Anglers, away from their TV Games, etc.

Special Recognition needs to go to Brian Hudson as our Lead Instructor. He was joined, in presenting the 8 weekly AAP Sessions, by Wayne Hill, Butch Minich, Frank Stout, Barb Dudley, Wayde Dudley & Me.

At yesterdays Graduation Ceremonies we were joined by some very Special Guests: Ms. Darlene Sprecher representing the ODFW AA Program, Mrs. Bambie Henderson our Host Teacher, James Ray & Casey Deckard Local ODFW Biologists who work closely with us, Alan Canfield & Mac Andrews both of whom are qualified AAP Instructors (Mac was recognized for a Special Certificate he designed for this years AA Program). In addition, we were also joined by many of the student’s parents for this fun event.

It is of Special Note & was a Complete Surprise that, at the conclusion of the event, Darlene, James & Casey presented our Fishing Club with an ODFW Certificate of Appreciation for the Community Service Work we have been doing with the Aquatic Angler Program. Look for the Certificate, which will be displayed on the Fishing Club WALL, in our LVH Club House (and can be seen in the photo above).

What a Grand Day it was & I am always humbled to be associated with such fine people that give, so generously, of their Time & Treasure to invest in the wonderful young children who will inherit & have to carry the Sustainability Mantel of our Oregon Fisheries into the Future.

I do not have anything to say about Saturday's event that has not already eloquently been said by John or Alan; however, I would like to add one thing from the perspective of myself and my colleagues in the ODFW Newport field office. Our intentions towards the communities in which we work and live are nothing if they are not sincerely good; however, without people like yourselves they would be nothing but good intentions as we simply do not have the capacity to achieve the types of things that were achieved on Saturday without being part of a team. I know I can speak for Casey when Isay that we both feel very privileged to be able to work with you all. We appreciate your support and enjoy supporting you.

REFLECTIONS ON THE KIDS FISHING DERBY -- ECKMAN LAKE -- 17 May 2008

This wonderful annual event, sponsored by the First Baptist Church of Waldport, went off without a HITCH!!! The only way that happens, is when a very fine bunch of very dedicated people come together TO MAKE IT HAPPEN!!!

On Saturday, the 17th -- IT HAPPENED -- We had beautiful Weather and a lot of wonderful Children caught a bunch of fish and enjoyed all of the many family activities made available to them compliments of the good men and women of the Church, Central Coast Fly Fishers, ODFW, US Forest Service, Parks Service, various Local Merchants & the Longview Hills Fishing Club.

A lot of preliminary, behind the scenes, work goes into doing something like this so well. It is most appropriate that our CCFF Friends be recognized for doing such an outstanding job of taking the lead with this year's various Fishing Support Activities. A lot of Fine Anglers, from both of our Fishing Clubs, contributed Time and Treasure to make this event so successful.

One man in particular needs to be singled out, Butch Minich. He clearly went Above and Beyond in his display of support for this successful Waldport Children's Event. Butch is to be congratulated and both of our Fishing Clubs are very fortunate to count him as a member.

It is most appropriate that I conclude by recognizing the many contributions made by my Longview Hills Fishing Club Colleagues. It always makes me proud to stand with each of you and I Thank You All ……….
