What we hope to do is hold a short G.M Meeting at the Club House >>&<< Then proceed over to visit with our LVH Neighbor, JOE ROSICA. Joe, as many of you know is Mikes Dad & he is also a Superb Knife Craftsman. He has agreed to open his shop to us & share some of the “Tricks” of his Knife Making Craft. I think we will find this a very interesting experience.

We will be conducting our 1^st Quarter B> B> Patrol under the guidance of our New Beach Mistress (aka Ellie LaMaster). Ellie would like us all to meet at the Club House & then proceed up the Coast Hwy. to Beverly Beach. As you may recall, we are responsible for conducting Quarterly Litter Patrols on this 1 Mile of Beach. It is recommended that we all Dress Warm, Wear Sturdy Shoes & Bring some Gardening Gloves. Ellie will have Trash Bags & provide appropriate Safety & Disposal Instructions, etc. >< This is a great way to get a bit of exercise & do a “Good Thing” for our Oregon Beaches……… Come join us for this Fun Beach Experience !!!

The LVH Fishing Club had another great road trip today, February 26th. We left the Clubhouse about 8:00 a.m. and took a leisurely drive up Hwy 101 to Tillamook. From downtown Tillamook we turned east for about 20 miles to the Tillamook Forest Center. There was just enough snow around to make it beautiful but the road was clear so the drive was great. This was a perfect time to go because there were no crowds and we had the place practically to ourselves. We were all pleasantly surprised at how much information and how well the museum was arranged. We watched a 15 minute movie on the Tillamook Burn and were even able to smell the smoke! Besides beautiful scenery the museum is well worth the drive and I know any of us would recommend it. From there we all drove (there were 14 of us in in 6 vehicles) to the Tillamook Cheese Factory for lunch. Liz Hill made two new friends - check out the cows watching her walk by . . . From there some went on the tour of the Cheese Factory, some headed home and some went to the Tillamook Sporting Goods store. A few also talked about visiting the Tillamook Air Museum. The trip was approximately 180 miles so it definitely qualifies as a road trip and I think I can speak for us all when I say it was a success and we can't wait for the next trip!

Wayde/Barb: great road trip today, Forest Center was better than expected and completed one those little circles in your life - in this case vivid memories of school bus rides to the Burn and following the string lines layed out by the foresters up the mountain sides as we planted, eating sack lunches with great views when got to the top. Drug Frank around the Three Capes Senic Route going back (new to him), great views of the Bay, saw elk feeding at the edge of the road, and stopped by the Whiskey Creek Hatchery - 100K Chinook smolts/year and we fed the BIG Rainbows (all 4-5 lb) in the visitor pond - looked like JAWS feeding time - a neat place to visit. They do handicap kids fishing in their rearing ponds (for the big rainbows) in Sept. Its all run by the Tillamook Bay Sports Fisherman Club. Another road trip sometime in the future??

The general membership meeting of the LVH Fishing Club was held February 19th at the LVH Clubhouse. Our special guest speaker, Ryan Miner, gave an excellent presentation and several "priceless" tips to fishermen on fishing and gear. Ryan is always one of our Club's favorite speakers.

There were several reports and updates on Club projects by various Board members, along with reports by Mac and Wayde on the progress of the Club video - sounds like it will be done soon. Also, Brian reported on the Aquatic Angler Program which starts again in April. Walter Chuck gave some details on the ODFW rockfish project which is now underway. There were several other reports and discussions but the best of the day (as evidenced in the photo with Matt) was Matt Matheney's account of his fishing trip with Phil Reed. I don't think Phil could ask for a better advertisement than that!

All in all, it was a good meeting (aren't they all?). We are all looking forward to the trip to Tillamook on Thursday, February 26th.

SPRING FLING !!!!!!!

SPRING FLING ON BIG CREEK !!!!!          Oh Boy >< What have they cooked up now ??????

 

Hi Folks >><< Here’s the Deal …. We have been blessed with a substantial number of New Fishing Club Members & we suspect that we have several “Old Hands” >> All of whom, may not have had a Fishing Rod in their hand for a long time.

 

Now, with that said, we would like to see what the interest level might be to organize a “Spring Fling” at the Big Creek Reservoir Complex >> for sometime in March.  

 

The IDEA would involve spending a morning Fishing & Catching some Rainbow Trout at Big Creek. The Club would provide Coffee, Donuts, Mentors & Fishing Gear >>&<< You would provide a Fishing License, a Folding Chair & Warm Cloths …… This fresh fishing approach should not, in any way, deter our “Seasoned Anglers” from feeling Very Welcome to be a part of this Fun Event. In fact, we could use some of your “Old Salt” angling skills to help us as Fishing Mentors !!!!!!

 

We think this could be a lot of fun for all parties involved BUT the real question is >>><<< What do you think of this “Wiz-Bang Idea” ……. ????

Several of us are instructors for the ODFW Aquatic Angler Program. Here we are discussing ideas and lesson plans getting ready for our next class which will begin in a short time. This is an 8-week program and we meet our students at the Newport Middle School once a week and teach them about fishing and, more importantly, stewardship and sustainability for the environment. Just wanted you all to know we really did get quite a bit of working time in even though you will probably hear about the great trip down to Brian Hudson's house in Florence (you can't see the plate of delicious brownies Pam made), the wonderful lunch and the great "tour" Wayne provided. It can't be all "work, work, work" after all . . .

*** ODFW has again chartered the 56-foot FV MISTY; she is Captained by Robert Wadell. He has over 31 years of Bottom Fishing Experience & his vessel will supply all of the necessary Safety & Fishing Equipment Required.  (You can bring your own Gear, if you so desire.)

 

*** Tagging Trips run Monday thru Friday (Ocean/Bar conditions permitting). Plan on at least 8 Hours Dock to Dock & Dress for Appropriate Sea Conditions.

At our monthly breakfast meeting at the Agate Beach Golf Course on February 5, 2009, Phil Reed explained his very generous gift: some lucky LVH Fishing Club member was going to be the recipient of a fishing trip with Phil!!!

Needless to say, everyone was very excited and anxious to get to the drawing.
But, of course, first things first. It would have to wait until after breakfast.

Mary, our favorite waitress, did the honors of drawing the lucky ticket.

Newcomer, Matt Matheney, holds up the lucky ticket! He was very excited and can't wait to get on the water with Phil. He didn't even flinch when he heard the 5:00 a.m. departure time . . .

Congrats to our new Beach Mistress, Ellie LeMaster. Thanks for your help, Ellie.

Doc Smith had a good buy on his boat and I saw several people interested and taking notes.

Here's the story we will be submitting to the Oregon Council FFF, the South Lincoln County News and The Federation of Fly Fishers regarding the riparian project recently successfully completed by CCFF members with the good help of our friends in the Longview Hills Fishing Club. Jason and Casey (ODFW) have now approved this story for release.

The next time we offer an opportunity to participate in a riparian project like this, ask someone who worked at this one and you will then want to join them in our effort to leave these habitats better than we found them.

The CCFF members who put on their gloves and joined in were: Mark Aiassa, Jack Maitlen, Butch Minich*, Hank Bryson*,
John Spangler*, Bud Roark* and myself*. Longview Hills members who joined in were: Barb and Wayde Dudley and Dave Dinsmoor.

We met a Butch's house at 9:00am and returned there for a special BBQ lunch by "Chef" Butch. All in all, a very rewarding day.

CENTRAL COAST FLY FISHERS COMPLETE A RIPARIAN PROJECT


The Central Coast Fly Fishers (CCFF), recently teamed up with the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife (ODFW), with assistance from members of the Longview Hills Fishing Club (LHFC), to restore a small riparian area in Seal Rock. The target property included a tributary of a native Cutthroat trout stream also inhabited by beavers and laced with fallen trees, and a variety of native alder and conifer trees. A significant portion of the site had also been taken over by the blackberry bushes and other brush, and the beavers had been actively falling trees and building dams.

The objective of the project was to improve the steam habitat by cutting or transferring alders that were near conifers and seedlings, to construct cages and place them around some alders and conifers and to plant new seedlings, some four feet tall. A number of uncaged alders were left for the beavers as their presence on the property is, in part, beneficial.

The club members, warmed and fortified by coffee and dough nuts, were instructed by Jason Kirchner, ODFW Stream Habitat Restoration Biologist, before heading into the frost covered stream area with gas powered weed eaters, chain saws, machetes, shovels, posts and sledges, determined to leave the area in much better condition than they found it. A part of the crew, armed with wire cutters, set up a cage construction site in a pick up where a 330 foot roll of fencing was turned into 55 tree cages.

Four hours later, the landscape was cleared of unwanted berry bushes and brush, and staked cages were in place around new seedlings, transplanted shore pines and many existing alders. The Central Coast Fly Fishers, with members from throughout Lincoln County, is dedicated to fly fishing education, conservation and restoration. The CCFF is a charter club of the 30,000 member strong Federation of Fly Fishers, an international organization headquartered in Montana. Together, these clubs are working to ensure that future generations will have the same fly fishing opportunities that we enjoy today.

QUARTERLY BEVERLY BEACH PATROLS FOR 2009

Hello Folks, It is my pleasure to inform you that ELLIE LeMASTER has agreed to become our “Beach Mistress”. This should help us better coordinate our LVH FC / QBBP’s for 2009 & beyond! (Try saying that 6X quickly )!!!

We hope to begin this process by trying to find a suitable day sometime in the month of February to do our 1^st Qtr. Patrol. It’s very important, that we continue to have Bob Abbott’s “Beach Bum Experience” remain an instrumental part of our Beach Activities………

As we discussed in our recent FC Board Meeting. we will all try to help Ellie with this transition. "Creek Meister” Dave will give “Beach Mistress” Ellie all of the Beach Patrol Information he received from Bob Abbott. The Dudley’s & Frank will help with Process & Tide Table Scheduling Issues. Wayne & I will help with the actual Event Marketing Process & Bob Abbott will continue to be the “Grand Po-Bah” of the Beach…….

Team Chinook, comprised of Bill, Bud & I, had a great run into the Trap. Unfortunately, we did not find any fish, but we did find the Trap in Excellent Condition with an adequate flow of crystal clear water >><< Thanks James for all of the Trap Work you & Bill did, it sure paid off.

 

The real BIGGIE of our run today occurred on our drive in >><< Just after we made the turn onto the Fall Creek Road >< Bud went ballistic, “Stop the Tree Hugger John” & look at that herd of ELK next to the road !!!!!   As I hit the Binders, Bill went ballistic, “expletive deleted” >>> What we saw, was a herd of over 25 ELK, out in the pasture, right next to the road. This may well be the same herd that Mike occasionally sees. Be that as it may, it was a Real 1^st Time Treat for us Old Trappers ….. The Sad News is, that we did not have a camera with us, so you will just have to take the “Word” of a couple of Old Trappers >< That this Story is the Real Deal ???   

 

P>S>> On our way home, we decided to do a quick “SOLV Bag Check” up on Big Creek. In the course of our check, we ran into Mike Rosica & between the 2 of us we deposited 8 Bags in the Water Plant Dumpster……..

The LVH Posse Rides Again!

The LVH Posse had a great day shooting on Monday, January 19th. As you can see, the sun was shining and we had plenty of fire power for everyone to get plenty of shooting in. I couldn't get a photo of everyone shooting the 2"x4"s in half because I was shooting, too. I was pretty proud of my team because we won (although the prize for the winning team is a little hazy and we haven't actually received anything yet). If you're interested in shooting one of your guns you haven't shot in years or want to try something new (like trap shooting), be sure and join us next time for a safe, enjoyable afternoon.

   I spoke to my friend who is the volunteer coordinator for the wildlife center in Astoria this morning after your meeting and she told me that the needs for the center are as follows: towels, flat sheets, and fresh or frozen fish.  There is not a need for any other foods as of right now, no room in the freezer. If anyone has anything to donate please give them our phone number and we will be glad to pick the items up and send them on their way north.

 

   Please thank your group for asking and helping a very worthy center.

 

   Also John, thanks for the work that you and your Coastal Fishing Clubs do.  Dan and I would like to help along the way in any of your projects if you could use us.

Several members of the LVH Fishing Club helped Central Coast FlyFishers with an ODFW Reparian Project on Thursday, January 15th, in the Seal Rock area. We met in the chilly morning at Butch's house and then went the short distance to the area we were working on. We started the day with coffee and donuts (thanks, John and Alan) and then got busy. Check out the nifty glove Butch made John for his right hand - it worked great at keeping John warm and comfy. It wasn't too long before the sun came out, jackets were taken off and men started sweating. If you look close at some of the pictures you will see the slide marks the beaver made in getting from the trees to the creek, and look at his handy work in building the dam. Everyone (except me, of course, I was just along to take pictures) worked hard at clearing brush, cutting those nasty blackberry bushes, cutting wire for the "cages" and placing the cages around trees to protect them from Mr. Beaver, and placing more wire cages around the +40 new trees that were planted. After a long morning everyone went back to Butch's house where he was kind enough to cook us a great lunch. As always, our group worked hard yet still managed to have a good time and finished the project sooner than expected. I'll repeat myself and say "Good job everyone!"

Just wanted to pass on a little "fishing" story from today.  Walt Chuck and I hit the water at about 0900.  We dropped a couple of crab pots up by the green gas tank and then headed out with 2 more.  We ran out NW of the north jetty tip and we were in about 50' of water.  I was running the boat and Walt was running the crabbing gear.  Just as he was getting ready to drop the last pot, something smacked into the side of the boat hard enough that it almost knocked him completely off of his feet and spun the bow of the boat around 180'.  A Gray whale had come up and hit us on the port side, then rubbed the entire side of the boat and finished its roll at bow and blew!

 

Needless to say, we checked our pockets and teeth to make sure we had everything.  After we realized what it was, we both acted like kids and just started yelling while pointing at the whale as it swam away from us and laughing our heads off.  Talk about an adrenaline dump!  I hope to not ever do that again!!!

 

I have scratches in the side of the boat in several places where the barnacles ran down the metal and vinyl.  One of the scratches is deep enough in the aluminum that I will have to have it buffed out, as it could cut a line should one go across it.

SCHOONER CREEK TRAP REPORT (12 JAN. 09)

SCHOONER CREEK FISH TRAP REPORT           ( 12 January 2009 )              (Team Chinook >< 4 men & 57 Miles)

 

WE HAVE A PROBLEM HOUSTON !!!!!!!!!!             ( SCHOONER FISH TRAP IS OUT OF COMMISSION )       

 

When we arrived, we did not find any fish in the Trap >><< In fact, what we found was a SILT & GRAVEL TRAP >>>>>>>>>

 

There was very minimal flow from the creek onto the Trap Head Gate. It was packed solid, with about 5 feet of silt & debris. This condition was level all of the way out the front of the Trap & into the creek. The bottom of the Trap contained about 18 inches of Silt with a very limited water flow of 6 to 8 inches. We were able to open the Tail Gate of the Trap & Bill went under & down the Fish Ladder. He found Heavy Gravel/Silt build-up at all of the Angel Changes in the Ladder, making it virtually impossible, with the severely restricted water flow & build up, for any possible up stream movement of fish.

 

We worked for about 2 hours >< With Bill down in the Trap & Bud & Bob working at the front of the Trap. Due to the significant amount of material in the front end of the Trap, all we were able to accomplish was to get some additional flow into the Trap. It was clear that, our best efforts were completely inadequate to deal with Raising the Head Gate and/or really getting the Trap back in a safe operational condition to function as a Fish Sanctuary.

 

The Present Condition of the Trap is that >>Upon our departure<< We took the Trap Out of Commission by Raising & Barring the Trap Tail Gate Up & Open. The Head Gate remains down & completely inoperative due to severe Gravel/Silt build up & restricted in-flow from the creek.

The LVH Fishing Club had its first meeting of 2009 with breakfast at the Agate Beach Golf Course. We had a great turnout, 25 members, and I was especially pleased to see our women members there: Ellie LeMaster, Bev Garvey, Jamie Hall and Marilyn Breakfield (of course, we have to include our favorite waitress in the ladies present).

Frank handed out tickets for our great door prize, even though he tried to buy everyone's ticket back for $1. 00.

After everyone visited and ate breakfast, John started the meeting. He displayed a pulaski supplied to us by ODFW for use at the Schooner Creek trap. It was given to Mike Samples as he will be visiting the trap later this morning. He stated it was his idea of a "palm pilot". I guess at this point some of us will never completely join the computer age.

Wayde discussed upcoming projects with ODFW (watch your e-mail for more info) and the event this evening at City Hall with the Newport Police Department, "City at 5:30". As several of the LVH Fishing Club are members of the NPD Volunteers, many of us will be there.

Lee gave an update on Tom McAdams. Not surprising, due to the excellent condition Tom kept himself in, he is doing surprisingly well. He still gets frustrated when he gets tired and can't do as much as he would like but he is progressing very well. Once again, the Angel List must have worked.

Butch gave an update on the CCFF news and meeting information and Brian did the same for the Steelheaders. Our three clubs certainly keep informed about fishing conditions and, as John pointed out, supply many hours (and vehicle miles) in volunteering to keep our fishing sport as healthy as possible. We all deserve a "pat on the back". On that note, I was approached by the owner of the Agate Beach Golf Course who wanted to thank us for our patronage. In this difficult economic time and with the winter weather, they really appreciate us having our meeting there. One more thing to feel good about . . .

The annual award was given to Phil Reed for catching the biggest fish in our salmon derby last year. His name was added to the plaque displayed at the LVH Clubhouse and he received a certificate of his own. He received his pin to display on his hat as did the others who caught a fish in the derby. Kevin McCarthy didn't make the meeting (surely it wasn't in anticipation of this trophy?) so he wasn't able to get the "trophy" for the smallest fish caught. John will be sure to get it to him and Kevin will keep it for 2009 until it is handed off the the lucky "winner" in the Salmon Derby next year.

We had a fantastic door prize for a guided fishing trip donated by Phil Reed. Jerry Gibson was the lucky winner (sorry, Frank).

Well, as you can see, we had an event-filled meeting. Keep you eye on your e-mails to see what is coming up next.

Our next meeting is at the LVH Clubhouse on January 22nd. After a brief meeting we will have an informative and eye-opening meeting presented by our very own Tom Simpson. Tom is a sergeant with the Newport Police Department and is going to present a slide show on methamphetamine and other drug uses in Lincoln County, as well as the rest of the country. I have seen this program and can guarantee you it is worth seeing. Just because we are all retired and probably do not have any problems at LVH, many of us are parents and grandparents and it is important to know what to look for and the damage this can do to our community and society. We can't say for sure but we are hoping our newest NPD "officer" Eyan, the police dog, will make an appearance. We hope to see you all there, and please ask your neighbors to come. This will be a "must see" for us all!

Annual Christmas Party

The Longview Hills Fishing Club held the annual end-of-the-year meeting on December 18th. It was truly a celebration with many members and friends attending, especially the guests of honor Brian and Pam Hudson. Brian received the Joe Longo Award for his years of service and invaluable contribution to the Club. Mike Samples won his "special" award for going above and beyond the call of duty. Everyone in the room had a chance to make their comments to both "gentlemen" and, being fishermen, there were several stories told. We had wonderful food, some special door prizes (special thanks to Bill Hanus), and even Barb got a special gift.

Just look at the pictures to see all our dear members and friends. By the way, we want to again congratulate Butch Minich on winning the 2008 CCFF Chuck Scott Award. Thanks to everyone for being there to help end 2008 with such a special day.

Now that’s a “Tall Drink of Water”… but it is also a Great Opportunity for some of you who have never been into the Siletz Trap to do a “Tag Along” with Casey & Hank. Here’s the Drill: Meet with Casey & Hank over at the ODFW South Beach Truck Staging Area, at 8 AM >< Dress Warm & Bring Waders or use some provided by ODFW >< Also Bring a Lunch & Plan on getting back to South Beach by 1 or 2 PM.
