Here's our report of a successful Boy Scout Merit Badge Program completed by the Central Coast fly Fishers Charter Club in Lincoln County, Oregon.

The Central Coast Fly Fishers, following the lead of the Federation of
Fly Fishers to share education through fly fishing, hosted a "Fly
Fishing Boy Scout Merit Badge Training Program" that can lead to the
Eagle Scout designation. CCFF VP Jack Maitlen organized this project,
assisted by Scout Master, Steve Traber.
The scouts, and seven CCFF member/mentors worked together for ten hours
studying and discussing nine of the ten Merit Badge Requirements
outlined in the well written BSA manual,"Fly Fishing." Subjects covered
were first aid, setting up a fly rod, reel and line, a variety of knots,
fly tying/fly uses, "leave no trace" procedures, proper catch and
release instruction, good sportsmanship related to fly fishing, fly
casting and a review of Oregon fishing regulations.
The scouts had to demonstrate sufficient skill in each area to have
their Merit Badge completion cards signed by their mentors, John
Sanchez, Mike Flaming, Tom Peck, Mac Andrew, Wally Flanagan and Alan
Canfield.
On April 24th the scouts met with CCFF members for a Fish A Long at
Olalla Lake where they completed their training by attempting to catch a
hatchery trout that they were to clean, cook and eat after the fish a
long (one of our members caught a fish that was used for this).
The Scout Master, the Scouts, and the Central Coast Fly Fishers members
who participated felt this is something we would like to do with other
Boy/Girl Scout or student groups. We recommend this program to fly
fishing clubs everywhere. The Federation materials and guidance they
give made this project much easier to complete than would have been the
case if we had to do it on our own.
