There will be "posse" practice at the quarry, Thursday 9/4, after the breakfast meeting.  We will leave the clubhouse 10:30 am and carpool to the quarry.  A new wrinkle this time will be helium filled balloons on 3 foot tethers.  Should be challenging.  There will also be clay pigeons and paper targets.  I will provide 2 each 9mm GLOCK pistols, 1 45 cal.GLOCK, 1 40 cal. GLOCK, 2 each  22cal pistols, 1 10/22 Ruger Rifle, 1 223 cal AR 15 rifle & a 12 ga shotgun.  The shotgun is a trap model and not the combat gun.  Bring ammo for any gun you would like to shoot. Wal-Mart has decent prices on ammo.

Several members of the LVH Fishing Club got together on Friday, August 22nd, for a clean up of Big Creek Reservoir. As always, many hands makes light work (or something like that). We had great weather and it didn't take long at all to have it looking spiffy.
Do NOT try this at home!
Cleaning up a bed frame someone was inconsiderate enough to toss on the side of the road.
Hoping that putting up a SOLV trash bag on the post will keep people from throwing trash in the Monofiliment Recycling Station on the other side.
Brian can't help himself, whenever he gets a chance he has to advertise the Aquatic Angler Program. (Good job, Brian!)

LVH Fishing Club had its 4th Birthday Party on August 21st at the LVH Clubhouse. As seen in the photos, everyone had a wonderful time. We had cake, wonderful guests to help us celebrate, and a good presentation from Virginia Tardaeweather of MidCoast Water Shed Council.

The First Annual Fishing Club Picnic was on Saturday, August 16th at Ona Beach State Park. This was a combined effort with LVH Fishing Club, NW Steelheaders and the Central Coast Fly Fishers.

We had beautiful weather, great food and wonderful friends. There was even a casting contest. Couldn't have asked for anything more.

As you know, each year the 3 Mid-Coast Fishing Clubs comprised of the NORTHWEST STEELHEADERS , CENTRAL COAST FLYFISHERS & LONGVIEW HILLS FISHING CLUB combine our Memberships at Ona Beach for our Annual Summer Picnic.

 

Traditionally, our good friends at the ANWS have hosted this Annual Summer Event & again this year Brian Hudson & his colleagues are to be commended for the outstanding hospitality extended by his ANWS Mid-Coast Chapter ……& …... He even arranged for the Summer Fog to open up just as we fired up the Barbie’s !!!!!

 

This was a wonderful gathering of really Fun PEOPLE & Lot’s of Wonderful FOOD >>>> I could risk telling you about all of the superb individual food dishes brought by the various attending Club Members >><< BUT I won’t >><< Because as sure as I attempt to do that, I’ll forget somebody’s favorite dish & step into Do-Do up over My Ears !!!     

 

However >><< I would like to mention Linda Reed’s “HOT MOMA” Sausages !!!  I actually witnessed grown men, after 3 bites of these “Bad Boys” … Blowing Smoke out of their ears & That’s the Truth !!!!!!!!    We cannot let this moment pass … without HONERABLE MENTION of the superb OYSTERS provided by Big Fish Hill & Duck’s Stout …. According to all reports, they were “World Class” >>&<< Thanks Guys for ALL of your Time, Treasure & Effort to make them so delicious ………

We had a great time at our monthly breakfast meeting at the Agate Beach Golf Course on August 7th. We had visits from old friends Jerry Gibson and Bud Roark and a very special treat for everyone was the appearance of Mac Andrew and his wife. Mac looked so well and so fit and it was really great seeing him. All that clean living must account for something, Mac!

ODFW begins restoration efforts on Big Elk Creek

NEWPORT, Ore. -- Throughout August and September, the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife will be placing 335 large boulders and 54 whole trees at selected sites in a 3.4 mile stretch of Big Elk Creek near Elk City. Fish habitat biologists have long known that adding trees and boulders to degraded streams can help improve salmon habitat, said Jason Kirchner, ODFW habitat biologist. But while these efforts have been successful on hundreds of small streams and tributaries, this is the first time ODFW has applied this technique on a much larger river. "We usually work in streams that are 20-25 feet across," Kirchner said. "Big Elk Creek is 70-80 feet wide with lots of water volume so we have to bring in bigger, heavier materials that won't wash away during heavy winter flows." In addition, the materials will be strategically placed near the banks of the stream rather the spanning the water from bank to bank as they would on smaller tributaries. The trees and boulders will help accumulate spawning gravel for chinook salmon and create a more diverse, complex habitat favored by salmon, steelhead and trout, Kirchner said. An excavator began placing boulders on Aug. 1 and in September a heavy-lift helicopter will place 54 whole trees 100-150 feet long and 15 root wad trees. "As you move into larger rivers the challenges are different than when you're working in smaller tributaries," said Kirchner. "If this project is successful, we hope it will become a model for restoration projects in larger streams." Over the next five years ODFW will monitor the effectiveness of the project by documenting changes in stream habitat and fish use near the newly placed trees and boulders. The project is a cooperative effort funded and supported by a mix of state and federal agencies and private landowners including Yaquina River Chinook Advocates (U-DA-Man Fishing Club), Gates Tree Farm, Green Diamond Resource Company, Oregon Department of Forestry, U.S. Forest Service, Oregon Watershed Enhancement Board, Oregon Wildlife Heritage Foundation, Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife, and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. This cooperation is a hallmark of the Oregon Plan for Salmon and Watersheds and the Oregon Conservation Strategy, which bring together a wide range of public and private partners to promote the recovery of vulnerable fish populations.

BEAVER CREEK FISH-A-LONG

We have planned a fish a long for Saturday, August 23rd, starting at 9:30am at Beaver Creek. Beaver Creek is at mile post 149 which is Ona Beach. We launch on the east side boat ramp and gather on the west side in the picnic area (the trip under 101 is interesting as the pigeons live there and believe they own the turf!

This beautiful creek is home to Cuts, native Steelhead and native Coho. We will be targeting Cuts and emphasizing catch and release (barbless hooks) to protect this fragile native fishery.

Fishing from the bank is limited, but possible. Butch will provide a few pontoon type boats for those who want to experience the real fun of trout fishing.

Cuts may be taken on Spruce flies, Spiders and a variety of dry flies. A five or six weight rod will be good as would something lighter if that's what you prefer.

I need to know right away if you plan to join us as we will be providing the usual (and always good) sausage dogs and hamburgers. You may bring other goodies if you would like, but that's not required.

Hence, our concern for what we perceive as our club beginning to show signs of >><< ATTENDANCE DEFICIT DISORDER !!!!!!!!  

 

As you all know, our Club's Ethos Statement makes it very clear that this is YOUR Fishing Club & the FC Board Members serve at YOUR Pleasure. It goes on to affirm, that WE ALL have a responsibility to support & contribute to the Club's Ethos as a strong Social & Community Resource, intended to benefit all LVH Residents & our other off campus Member Friends. This is a collaborative process………

 

We would not be doing our job if we did not address the A.D.D. Symptoms we are seeing & it is also your job to get more involved in helping to reverse this A.D.D. trend. 2008 LVH FC SALMON DERBY

LONGVIEW HILLS FISHING CLUB >><< SALMON DERBY for 2008         ( 1 August thru 30 November )

 

Yes, Fellow Anglers >><< Even with the ODFW Fishing Limitations placed on the 2008 Salmon Fishing Season, we will be holding our Annual Salmon Derby for 2008, beginning on the 1^st of August & running thru the 30^th of November.

 

This year the Club will fully sponsor the Derby & will not require any entrance fees for Derby Anglers. As we did last year >><< We will be following the same ODFW Regulations, as it relates to fishing in our local mid-coast rivers & watershed. The Largest Bright Fish will be considered the Derby Winner, with the appropriate anglers’ name being engraved on the Derby Plaque, which is displayed on the LVH FC WALL.

 

Wayde Dudley will again be “Tracking” all fish caught. So it is incumbent upon all Derby Anglers to keep him informed of your catch. If your fish is not registered with him, it could jeopardize your chance of winning the 2008 Derby.

 

The Derby Plaque will be presented to the Derby Winner at our 1^st Fishing Club Breakfast in January of 2009.

Here’s the Deal >><< I am slated to go up to the Siletz Trap on Friday, the 18^th, with Wayde & Kevin. Today my Mary was informed that she needs to have an MRI done on her back .. Pronto !!!    We have been very fortunate to get an MRI Slot at the Corvallis Hospital for early AM on this Friday.

 

I feel strongly about getting Mary to Corvallis for her Medical Appointment >> but << I also feel strongly about trying to get some additional help for the guys that have Trap Duty this Friday. As you know we have been seeing significant increases in the number of fish running into the Trap. Hence, 3 guys sure helps to spread the Trapping Load …………

What does a guide do when he wants to catch a fish? He hires another guide to take him fishing. Yesterday I had to chance to fish with a old friend and his wife on the North Fork of the Lewis River out of Woodland, Wa, there was four of us fishing alone with Tim and his Wife Shana. It was a great day to fish with friends. We landed 5 summer steelhead, avg day for Tim who's guiding on the Lewis this summer. It was a great day to sit back, hold the rod and let someone else drive the boat for a change. If anyone wants to hook up with Tim, let me know and I will give you his phone number, but he's booked for years in advanced, thats how good he is. Now its off to the BBQ for fresh steelhead and wine!

At the July 3rd breakfast meeting at the Agate Beach Golf Course, Wayde Hutchings (11-year old grandson of Wayde and Barbara) gave the report on the Bay Crabbing Trip in Grandpa's place. (See report on Bay Crabbing Trip below). Grandpa was busy at the Siletz Fish Trap.

Wayde & his grandson Scott Hutchings went to the Siletz trap with Kevin Bastien and Derek Wilson today. They wanted to check it on Thursday because Friday is a holiday and there are a lot of fish in the river. Mostly sunny in the gorge today and in the mid 60's. The trap was checked on Wednesday the 2nd and 50+ fish were left in the trap and 60 were hauled to Moonshine Park and released. The trap held 110 fish today with the following count:

Hatchery Steelhead

36 bucks 53 hens

Wild Steelhead

6 bucks 14 hens

Wild Chinook

1 jack

60 fish were released at Moonshine Park and 29 were taken to Lincoln County Food Share.

The temperature in the trap and at Moonshine was 60 degrees. There were many fisherman today near the 1 mile mark. 3 deer were seen on the way in this morning.

Bay Crabbing Trip - July 2, 2008

The Bay Crabbing Trip went very well. Wayne, Barb, Wayde and 2 grandsons (Scott and Wayde) made the trip. The weather was very good and the crabs cooperated. We were on the Misty from Tradewinds Charters. It is 52’ long and very comfortable. We used 12 pots and crabbed near the north jetty about half way out. There were 9 paid crabbers on the boat. In the allotted 3 hour trip we caught 94 Dungeness crabs and 6 red rock crabs. Many of the crabs were quite large and all seemed quite full of meat. Each crabber took home 10-1/2 crabs each. We had a great time, and I hope next time more LVH Fishing Club members can make the trip.
