The New Board Members will effectively assume their duties on 1 January 2010.

 

On behalf of all of the 2009 Board Members, I feel it safe to say, that we all very much enjoyed the privilege of serving you as LVH FC Board Members. You will notice that Wayde Dudley is stepping down as our Operations Officer. This will allow him more time to be involved as a Volunteer with the Newport Police Department. Larry Dale has indicated his interest in the Operations Officer Position formally held by Wayde.

Suffice to say, Wayde has done an Outstanding Job as a Member of the LVH FC Board & We wish him every success in what ever the future may have in store for him.

HELLO ALL!

JUST WANTED TO LET YOU KNOW THAT BILL HAD SURGERY AT PROVIDENCE HOSPITAL IN PORTLAND ON THURSDAY. HE HAD A KIDNEY STONE STUCK IN THE TUBE BETWEEN THE KIDNEY AND THE BLADDER, WHICH THEY WERE ABLE TO DEMOLISH WITH A LAZER.

HE ALSO HAS STONES IN BOTH KIDNEYS. THE DR HAD TO PUT A STENT IN BOTH KIDNEYS AND HOPE THAT THE STONES WILL MORE EASILY PASS THROUGH NOW. HE WILL GO BACK IN ABOUT 10 DAYS TO HAVE THE STENTS REMOVED.

THE DR SAYS HE HAS QUITE A FEW STONES IN THE KIDNEYS THAT ARE UNDER THE SURFACE. THERE'S NOTHING THEY CAN DO ABOUT THOSE UNLESS THEY ACTUALLY BREAK THROUGH INTO THE KIDNEYS.

I BROUGHT HIM HOME FRIDAY NIGHT AND HE'S RESTING AND FEELING FAIRLY WELL ... AAH THOSE GOOD DRUGS! HE'LL BE DOWN FOR A BIT (AT LEAST I'LL TRY TO KEEP HIM THAT WAY!)

This will be the Last Coordination Meeting for FY 2009. As usual, attendees will be comprised of various Club Officers Representing the 3 Mid-Coast Fishing Clubs ( CCFF, ANWS & LVH FC ).

 

13  Oct   Tuesday      SCHOONER CREEK FISH TRAP >< ROAD PREPERATIONS    ( 9 AM >< All Hands Muster at the Club House )

 

Wayde is calling together a “Road Gang / Work Party” to Clear Brush & Debris from the Access Road into the trap. He indicates that Weed Whackers, Loppers & other types of Brush Clearing Tools will be adequate. We All should Bring a Lunch, Gloves & Wear Study Boots. This Years Trap Operations will Begin Effective on Friday, the 16^th of October. A Rotating Servicing Schedule, for the various Trap Teams, will be published shortly.

NOTE >< This will be an “Aerobic Exercise Event” >><< If you have any additional questions, please feel free to contact Wayde Dudley.

 

15  Oct    Thursday    GENERAL MEMBERSHIP MEETING          ( 9 AM Muster at the Club House )

 

This should be a very interesting & informative morning. We will hold a short meeting at the Club House. Then we will carpool up to the Big Creek Water Treatment Plant. Upon our arrival, we will be met by, our Pal, Steve Stewart, the Plant Supervisor. Steve will give us a Walking Tour of the Plant Operations & then he will give us a Briefing on what some of the Plans are for the New Water Treatment Facility.

NOTE >< At the conclusion of our WTP Tour…. Larry Dale would appreciate a Few Members “Hanging with Us” to do a Quick Litter Patrol & Bag Change ( If you can Help with the Litter Patrol, Please Remember to Bring your Sturdy Gloves … Thanks )

STORIES FROM OUR MEMBERS

08-18-09: Bill Furgason and I joined with local fishing guide Phil Reed yesterday on a trip to Tillamook Bay. It was a little too rough outside the jaws of the jetty for Phil's small boat so we stayed inside. I caught a wild coho that had to be released and Bill was lucky enough to bag a fin-clipped coho to enjoy on his bar-be-que. The fishing was slow inside and we didn't see any other fish caught. I heard the ODFW surveyor at the dock tell one boater that the returns were averaging one fish per person. It was a great day. Frank
8-31-09:

Out the door at 4:30 am, well .....almost. Larry Dale's alarm didn't go off so we had to awaken his bride so that she could get him dressed and out the door. Phil Reed received reports that there were fish in the Tillamook Bay so that is where he decided we should try our luck rather than out on the jetty. We were on the water a little after 7:00 and pulled into the "Ghost Hole" after a short 5 minute ride. Within 10 minutes I had our first Coho in the net. Unfortunately it was wild and had to be released. Phil had a bite just before that and Larry landed another about a half our later. Again, it was a wild fish and released. We were the only boat on the water at the Ghost Hole for about a half hour but a few boats joined us one by one until there were about 5 or 6. As far as we could tell we were the only ones to catch any fish. After a lull in the action Phil decided to switch to heavier weights and smaller hooks. Within a few minutes I landed another nice Coho but once again it was wild. Then just around high tide at 11:00 am Larry landed his second fish. This time it was a hatchery and came into the boat. I was really impressed by the action these Coho put out. They area ball to catch. The winds came up pretty strong around noon so we reluctantly headed for the dock.

According to the ODFW surveyor there were only a few fish brought in. We were the only ones to catch any fish at the Ghost Hole and apparently the jetty came up dry. We did see one nice Chinook that was taken in the ocean.

Phil marked a lot of fish on his fish finder and there were many on the bottom that appeared to be Chinook. We really had a great time and Phil showed that his skill was the deciding factor in providing a successful trip. Frank Stout

Here is a picture of my two clients on Tillamook Bay, the pictures were taken by Bill Monroe of the Oregonian who was also fishing there at the time, one picture and short article will appear unday in the Outdoors section of the Oregonian newspaper. You might know the angler on the left, he is Steve Massie of Siletz, better know as "Safeway Steve" and work at the Safeway store here in Newport.Steve and his Dad, Bill fished with me and took home 5 Chinooks, ranging in size from 30-24 lbs, also two nice fat Jack Chinooks, Mr. Monroe was so impressed that we were catching fish when no one else was and came over to get pictures and info on what we were doing, sure made a great day even better. thanks for passing this on. 09-20-09 Frank

On Sunday, Phil Reed took my uncle Tom, nephew Patrick and I fishing on the Yaquina. We left the dock at 7:00 am and took a quick pass along the LPG tank at the later part of low tide but no luck. We then proceeded up the river and started trolling herring from the power lines up river toward the oyster farm. There were a lot of boats but we only saw 2 fish caught with only one of those put into the boat before noon. There were a lot of boats on the river but no one seemed to be having any luck until my nephew had his first strike at about 12:30. He landed a nice 10 lb wild coho. At just about the same time another boat near us landed another. We were near the oyster farm at the time. We continued to fish through high tide at 2:00 pm until approximately 3:30 but with no other strikes. We saw a few caught after putting our one and only in the boat but not very many for the number of boats on the water. My uncle is from California and my nephew is from Colorado Springs. This was his first salmon and Phil provided him with a great memory that will never be lost. Frank

Here are some stories with no photos:

09-15-09:

The day started at the South Beach marina ramp at 7 am on Tuesday (9-15). Wayne Hill met Tom Simpson for a day of crabbing and fishing. Tom had dropped crab pots in the ocean the night before to "soak" so the first run was check the crab pots. The ocean was starting to lay down after the recent storm but it must have been too rough as there were very few crab in three pots and one pot was missing. After many whale sightings, the search for the missing pot was abandoned and the three pots were rebaited and returned to the ocean.

Once back in the bay, herring were caught and the fishermen went up the bay to across from Sawyer's Landing. After only one strike on Tom's pole in about an hour's time, high tide arrived. Tom hooked a "hot" fish that took several reel singing runs and was finally herded into the net....a nice wild buck coho about 13#'s. Shortly after Wayne hooked a fish and as Tom was reeling in to grab the net he also had a takedown. It was a "double header". As both were wild coho and you are only allowed one per day per person, Tom released his fish and got Wayne's fish in the net. It was a nice 12# hen coho. With a limit of wild coho, fishing turned to Chinook for about an hour. None were biting. It seemed that the bite was close to or at high tide.

The trip was topped off by a return trip to the ocean to pull the pots left earlier and find the one missing pot. The three pots held only a couple more crab and after scouting for the missing pot, it was finally located. It had drifted nearly a mile south of the location it was dropped and it had no crab. Just off the north jetty a whale was taking a leisurely cruise on the surface and offered a great close up view. Of course the batteries in Tom's camera were dead and by the time new batteries were loaded, the whale was no longer on the surface enough to snap good pictures. After a very great day, it ended back at the dock at 3 pm.

There are coho in the bay and they are biting. There were several others caught on nearby boats but it could not have been any better than the experience of Wayne and Tom. The day would yield 2 wild coho and 6 large ocean crab. Tom proved to be a great skipper and guide.

This year you are allowed one wild coho per day and a total of 5 for the season. Reports are that a few chinook have been landed but are not nearly as plentiful as the coho.

09-22-09:

Good morning Wayne,

I am up and headed out the door after a quick bite for a long off shore trip for tuna. Should be fun and the ocean is supposed to cooperate too!

We ended up with our 2 Coho, 9 & 11 lbs. Had 5 other take downs, including Bob getting hit right at the boat by an estimated 20-25lb Chinook as he was reeling in to change bait. It came unhooked after about a 2 minute fight, so we got to cuss it a little! Grass was still very bad!

We had strikes throughout the incoming tide, not just at tide change. We watched several other fish get caught too.

Went out last night and went bottom fishing. Got a limit of Sea Bass. One of the guys on board got a very nice 39" Ling. That was our bonus fish! Beautiful, HOT, evening out on the ocean. Lots of whales again, sometimes very close to the boat.

Have a great day. Hopefully tomorrow I will be doing nothing but running the vacuum packer.

H1N1 Flu and General Flu

H1N1 -- At risk groups are:

• Small children and
• Young adults up to age 35-40

Have a Flu Buddy.

• Make arrangements with family or friends to call them if you are too sick to care for yourself but not sick enough to go to the Emergency Room.
• Need someone to go to the store for you.
• Someone to be sure you are hydrated and eating.
• Your Flu Buddy needs to wear a mask around you and be absolutely sure to wash their hands. Gloves would be best.

General Information:

• Oregon has had 105 hospitalizations of H1N1 flu resulting in 12 deaths
• The US has had 9000 hospitalizations resulting in 555 deaths (.06% of those hospitalized died)

Get Your Flu Shot -- No Excuses

• You CAN NOT get sick from a flu shot. The vaccine is killed -- dead; it can’t infect you.
• You may feel a general achiness and have a low grade temperature (100 – 101). This is your immune system working to protect you.
• If you are allergic to the preservative they make vaccines without preservative.

The Flu is NOT a Cold is:

• Slow onset. Feeling generally icky
• Scratchy throat
• Runny nose
• Low grade temperature under 101

The Flu Is:

• One day you are feeling fine but the next day you feel horrible.
• High temperature 102 or higher.
• Coughing
• Possible vomiting and diarrhea (only 25% of H1N1 patient present with these symptoms).

We will also see if Dean can give us an update on the Status of the Commercial Pier Rebuild & what’s currently happening with the NOAA Port Selection & the Bellingham Challenge. This should be a very informative meeting.

19   Sept.    Saturday      25^th ANNIVERSARY SOLV GREAT OREGON FALL BEACH CLEANUP >>> ( 9 AM Muster at the LVH Club House )

 

Under the direction of Ellie LeMaster >< We will gather at the Club House & form Car Pools to get us down to Beverly Beach at about 10 AM.  As we did last year, we will be blending our LVH FC Litter Patrol Resources with a lot of folks who will be turning out to support this very worthwhile 25^th Anniversary SOLV Effort.

 

NOTE>> On this same Saturday >< Our CCFF Friends will be holding their Annual Garage Sale at the Newport Home of John Sanchez. Watch for more information as CCFF makes it available to us. We all should have plenty of time to Hit the CCFF Garage Sale after our Beach Patrol.

This fishing report in from our friend, Nicole Mangum, who is involved with us in Newport Police Department Volunteers and CERT. She and her family went salmon fishing a couple of weeks ago and she sent us these photos. I'm sure many of us can relate to being so sick we wanted to die . . . to forgetting all about it as we caught "the big one".

Here is our salmon fishing trip my family took 2 weeks ago. We had a great time, mostly. I got sea sick for the first time and Jessi said she'll never go on a boat again because she got sick pretty badly. But she slept and then woke up feeling just fine and ready to catch a big fish. Everyone on the boat caught their limits.
Salmon fishing is awesome!!

The biggest fish was probably 12 pounds (I caught that one, of course) hehehe. Jessi loved the fishing part not the sick part. Mitch was just happy to be there. We are ready to go again--on a clear, smooth water day.

At the August breakfast meeting of the LVH Fishing Club we had our usual breakfast, conversation and activity reports. We had a special report by Lee Fries on the status of the new NOAA facility. Lee has been attending the Port of Newport meetings and reporting to our Club on a regular basis for several months but since Newport had received the exciting news the day before our Fishing Club meeting that Newport would be the location of the new NOAA facility, his report was especially timely and exciting to us all. Thanks, Lee, for all your hard work and for answering all our questions. Good job!!

On July 23rd several members of the LVH Fishing Club had a very special tour. We visited Foul Weather Trawl Company. We were welcomed by Sara Skamser (The Trawl Goddess) who showed us the "almost" lost art of making and repairing fishing nets used by commercial fisherman. As the only business of its kind on the West Coast, Sara and her staff keep busy supplying commercial fishermen from Seattle to San Diego with these big and expensive nets. As impressed as we were by her business, I can only imagine how impressed and grateful her commercial fishing clients are. We are all lucky to have her here in Newport!

It is with sadness, that I share with you some recent information Wayne Hill & I received from Jack & Ginny Scherer. Jack as you may recall is the Founding (2004) President of our LVH Fishing Club. We thought it only fitting to invite The Scherer’s to drive down from Lacy Washington & join us for our August 19 Luncheon.

 

In the course of our conversations with them >< They shared with us Ginny’s recent health diagnosis >< Which has Life Threatening Repercussions. The bottom line is that it will not be possible for them to be with us in August >>&<< It would be most appropriate for us to consider putting Ginny on our Angel List >>>>>>

 

I am sure the Scherer’s would be most appreciative of your consideration & I Thank Each of You on their behalf …….. JCS
