The monthly breakfast meeting was held April 5th at the Agate Golf Course Restaurant. We were fortunate to have Bill Lackner who, as The Hook says, "Really Knows His CLAMS".) He gave a great slide presentation and told us where and what kinds of clams to dig locally. We will also be having a clam dig with Bill later this month, so if you are ready to have a clam feed at your house be sure and watch for date, time and place.

We welcomed some new members to The Club as well as some returning "Snow Birds". It was great seeing new faces and some old familiar ones.

CAMP PALMER CREEK                  ( 1 April 07 )

 

STAND DOWN…………Today, was the last day of our 6 day vigil on the 50,000 Steelhead Smolt planted in the 2 BEAVER/DUCK PONDS on Palmer Creek. It was sad to see it all come to an end. Although, I am sure the 2 resident Beaver are happy to see us leave. What is worth remembering is that we left a very light footprint on the camp area & perhaps we will see these beautiful Steelhead again someday.

 

It is also worthy to note, that this would not have been possible without the 10 EAGLES from our Club who did overnight duty & worked so closely with our ODFW Friend Casey Deckard.

 

SPECIAL MENTION needs to be made about the significant contributions of FRANK & GINGER STOUT with their Camping Trailer & BUD ROARK with his Electric Generator. Take a moment, the next time you see these folks & give them a SPECIAL THANK YOU !!!!    THE HOOK

CAMP PALMER CREEK           (29 March 07)

 

THIS JUST IN……….All’s well in Camp, on Day 3 !!  The Steelhead Smolt are being fed 2 times a day. Many of the little buggers have actually started to go over the stop logs & begin their migration down the Siletz River to the sea !!  It still looks like Casey will hold the remaining Smolt in the Beaver Ponds thru Saturday.

 

You may recall, that all of the Fishing Club Officers agreed to hold our 2^nd Quarter Board meeting at Camp Palmer Creek today. The meeting went along rather well until the very end. It seems that Big Fish, First Lady & the Surveyor took umbrage with us calling the ponds…BEAVER PONDS !!!    It was their contention & they proposed a motion to that effect, that the ponds should be called…DUCK PONDS !!!  

 

This resulted in the General, Ducks & the Creek Meister finding this motion very contrary to the laws of nature & general approbation !! At this point Sparky did not have an opinion & Ginger abstained from what was rapidly becoming a VERY HEATED DEBATE !!!

 

As the Club President…..I was about to intervene, when Ducks got hit on the head with a plastic Water Bottle, the exact culprit has still not been determined. Be that as it may, in a fit of great angst, the Surveyor knocked the table over & the First Lady’s camera got trampled….Big Fish & the Creek Meister found themselves under the table, engaged in some very sharp dialogue, the exact contents of which I prefer not to relate in this report. While all of this was going on, I became aware of the First Lady accusing the General of intentionally damaging her camera. He of course, was defending his innocence with great vigor !!!  

 

It was at this point, that Sparky’s CERT Training came in handy, because some how Big Fishes Pants caught ON FIRE !! There is reason to believe, this was the result of a surreptitious cigarette lighter in the possession of the Creek Meister.

 

Clearly this was the appropriate for me, as the Club President, TO ACT !!!  I did & both groups of antagonists’ TURNED ON ME & they THREW ME INTO THE….”I am afraid for my life to use the correct (B) term”…. POND !!!    Suffice to say, it was “Katy Bar the Door” when Ginger suggested’ we all have some more coffee & another cookie !!!  Yes, she returned us to our civilized sense of decorum with a COOKIE !!!

 

I was a little WET, but closed the meeting, with all of us agreeing, it was one of the BEST BOARD MEETINGS we have ever had & I might add we agreed to table the “TYPE OF POND ISSUE” for a later meeting in JUNE !!!                   THE HOOK

 

 

 

 

 

 

Some of us went to Palmer Creek to begin the great smolt watch on Tuesday, March 27th. We helped Frank set up his trailer, then helped with the unloading of the smolts. It turned out to be a nice day and was a wonderful spot for exploring. Brian was nice enough to show Ginger Stout and me the weir and the old growth forest. It really was amazing . . . thanks Brian. I think we were all a little envious that Frank and Ginger were going to be able to stay and all reluctantly said good-bye (although as the temperature dropped leaving was a little easier). This is a good thing our Club is doing, but it is definitely made easier because it is such a beautiful setting.

THIS JUST IN……….Today began the largest combined ODFW///LVH Fishing Club Project we have ever attempted !!!

 

As you may have heard, ODFW wanted to plant 50 Thousand Winter Run Steelhead Smolt in 2 beaver Ponds that feed into Palmer Creek, which feeds into the Siletz River. The supervising ODFW Biologist, Casey Deckard, needed to have pond protection for the smolt, 24 Hrs. a day, for about 6 to 7 days. This would protect the smolt from predation & allow them to acclimate to their natural environment….. before they were released from the ponds to begin their migration to the sea.

HOW TO DO THAT ???

 

That’s where our Club stepped up to the plate !!!   Big Fish & the General got a hold of this challenge & away we went !!!!

 

Today the Steelhead Smolt went into the ponds & CAMP PALMER CREEK became a reality !!!  This all was made possible because of a Gathering of Eagles……Frank & Ginger Stout have provided their cool 26ft Trailer & Bud Roark kicked in a dandy generator. Big Fish has a Watch Bill in place, that will meet the needs of providing a 24 hour vigil for these fish until “Casey says, LET’ EM GO”  !!!!

TRAP REPORT

SCHOONER CREEK FISH TRAP REPORT          (19 March 07)

 

Team Chinook (Sparky, Bud Roark, Ben Davi & me) made the run & found a pristine trap with very good clear water flow. The end result was 4 very wet Trappers, a really cool Golden Salamander & No Fish !!

 

Upon our return to LVH, Bud & I went up to Big Creek & replaced 2 Litter Bag Stations that were removed from the Lower Reservoir….Special thanks to the “Salmon King” McCarthy for providing the necessary materials & to the Creek Meister Dinsmoor for taking his own time to make an earlier check of the 15 Bag Stations on the Reservoir Complex.

There was a meeting held at the LVH Clubhouse on March 15th. I was unable to attend that meeting but I understand the guest speaker, Ryan Miner, did an excellent job. Ryan is a a professional fishing guide, however, he agreed to talk about crabbing and clamming. Luckily, Shutterbug (aka Charles Burke) was there and took these great pictures. Thanks, Shutterbug.

Team Steelhead went on their scheduled trip to the Schooner Creek Fish trap on Monday, March 12th. Alas, as you can see by the dejected souls in the photo, there were no fish. The good news is everything was clean and in working order. The fish trap was cleaned of debris and we went on our way. It is never a wasted trip to Schooner Creek because you always get to experience the great beauty of the area. It beats working any day . . .

This Just In……..The Dynamic Duo ( Bud Roark & Butch Minich ) with Casey at the Helm…Report a Good Day at the Trap !!!

 

They had a Total of 33 Steelhead.....( 23 Natives & 10 Hatchery ).

 

The Natives were transported back down to Spring Creek for release. The Trappers said, it rained on & off, but the Bucket Ride & seeing the beautiful Native Steelhead released back into the wild made it all worthwhile. They also reported, that it looks like Casey’s successful knee surgery has him “about ready” for a Marathon Run !!!

 

THE HOOK

Several members of the Longview Hills Fishing Club met at Beverly Beach on Saturday, March 3rd to participate in our quarterly beach cleanup project. Beach Meister (Dave Dinsmoor) coordinated everything beautifully, even the weather.

It always surprises us, no matter how many times we do this, how much garbage we pick up. It is also surprising what we find. For instance, Wayne Hill found a light bulb sitting on the rocks. It had been washed up and remained unbroken.

As you can see from the photos, it was a wonderful Oregon Coast day and a great time spent with friends. I want to thank everyone for helping me add to my rock and shell collection. I really came home with a lot of "treasures."

SCHOONER FISH TRAP-03/05/07

Today Frank Stout's team had fish trap duty. Not everyone on his team could make it today so we improvised and our group this morning included Frank, Bob Abbott, Hank Bryson, Wayde and myself. Unfortunately, there were no fish in the trap today. We did, however, have a very productive morning. Wayde replaced the broken cable with new and the gate worked just fine. With three shovels working and the Creek running as fast as it was, it didn't take long to get the Creek cleaned up. You can see by the picture of Hank how fast the water was running. I especially like the photo of him "behind bars". Anyway, everything looks good, now we just have to wait for some fish to come along and enjoy it!

You might notice a new link on the right that says "River Water Levels". Click this and it goes to a site called Oregon H20. This shows the water levels in various bays, rivers, etc. Could really come in handy. Thanks to Brian Hudson for turning us on to this very cool website.

SILETZ FISH TRAP

We had our first meeting of the month today (Thursday, March 1st) which is always a breakfast meeting at the Agate Beach Golf Course. We did not have a speaker today so just enjoyed a great breakfast and good company . . . this retired life is tough. We had a quick meeting and discussed the fish traps, the fishing and cleanup at Big Creek, the upcoming cleanup at Beverly Beach (this Saturday), upcoming events and other normal Club "stuff." We have lots going on so be sure to check your e-mails from Big Fish on a regular basis, and check the calendar on the website.

In response to the discussion regarding the Siletz Fish Trap, Big Fish sent the following e-mail to everyone (if you have volunteered to help, please make a note of your time and be sure to call Bill Furgason or Wayne Hill if you will be unable to make it):

"Below is the email I sent to Casey Deckard today. We are always looking for more hands to sign up to help with this worthwhile program. If you have signed up, please make sure the contact information is correct.

Be sure to take a lunch and water!!!

What is the experience like at the Siletz fish trap? John Spangler wrote the following about his day with Casey:

• This is a very labor & time intensive operation, and not with out some risks (guiding & filling the transfer bucket & fish transport).
• Dress warm & wear good socks..you will be in the water for a long period of time (Gloves would be a good idea too).
• Hip Boots are OK..but..If you help net fish, you will need full waders. Even then you will get wet.for some reason the 40 in. Steelhead do not like to go in a net !!
• Yes..2 hands are much better than 1 hand !!...I was able to help Casey with fish registration data & several other useful functions, but those of you without my limitations would make the day go along a bit more quickly.
• When the fish counts begin to rise, it may well require at least 2 volunteers to handle the volume.
• Access to & from the traps is not particularly difficult, but handling a net with a very unhappy Steelhead would be a good skill to develop.

All in All it was a very fine experience & Casey is a Prince of a Man to work with. He has the patience of a saint & the strength of a bull. I would go again in a Heart Beat, but I believe the project would be best served, if I were viewed as a last resort, fill-in kind of guy. Our Club's involvement is greatly appreciated by Casey & it is worth the effort to be doing such a Fine Thing, in such a Beautiful Place, with such a Fine Man. THE HOOK

Schooner Creek Fish Trap Report

Frank Stout reported that on Monday, February 26th, there were two steelhead in the trap, one male, one female, both wild and both dead. He has no idea as to what may have happened. He took some photos showing their less-than-warm experience. Even though it looked chilly, those of us who have been up there know it was still a great experience.

Tune Up Success……...How do you measure it ???

 

If we use the number of Fish Caught….It was a looser !!!  By the way, I learned that ODFW did not follow thru on the Stocking Schedule. I have not been able to find out why, but those of you who fished so hard may take some solace, in that, at least you know it was not completely your fishing skills that were lacking. The only fish caught, that I am aware of, was landed by Ducks (aka Frank Stout).

 

If we consider what a Great Day the weather provided & that 3 Central Coast Fly Fisher Friends joined with 9 of our Longview Hills Club Members…..for a total of 12 Anglers…..It was a Big Time Success !!!  We should also acknowledge the effort put forth by our good friend, Butch Minich, by bringing, from his FLY SHOP, several of his cool Float Boats (one even had a fish finder on it) for all hands to see & take for a spin on the water.

 

I believe it is fair to say….A Good Time was had BY ALL !!!   By that measure of success, we owe both The Creek Meister, who was pinch hitting for the Wrench, and The Wrench, for setting up this event……ATT’A BOYS……for jobs WELL DONE !!!!

A DAY IN THE LIFE OF A PROFESSIONAL RIVER GUIDE

 

Did you ever fanaticize about what it would be like ??  You know….fishing every day, meeting interesting people, lots of fun conversation, catching lots of fish, the glamour of it all & how’ bout the Big Bucks……..Better then a “Day at Work”…RIGHT……….

 

Well lets see……up at 5:00 AM, load the boat the night before, prep the poles & gear, drive to river early & wait a half hour for the clients to show, determine that the river is out of shape…while standing in a rain storm, drive back to home, strip the boat down & re-prep with Trout trolling gear, meet client again at the lake, client brings Dead Worms he bought at Fred’s, now we only have Dead Worms for bait, did I mention is was raining?? Unload boat from trailer & row around the lake pulling Dead Worms, did I mention it was raining & blowing side ways, Damn wet & no fish, client thinks it might be a good idea to call it a day…I agree…load the boat & return home, unload the boat, dump out 10 gallons of rain water, put gear away, tarp boat down & return it to storage parking lot, dry out waders, take a shower & long nap!!...Yep, better than work!!...Did I mention it rained yesterday?? Off to work the fish trap tomorrow, then looks like Friday will be a good day to try the river again, follow up on memo to call clients to bring rain gear & a “Sense of Humor.”

 

Better than a day at work…RIGHT !!........Well there is “360 ways of looking at an Elephant”…….This is a true story & it taught me not to be so quick to say “RIGHT”……It does a man good to eat a little crow once in awhile, keeps him humble !!                 THE HOOK

We met at the Clubhouse last Thursday, February 15th, for a quick meeting before going on our tour of the Oregon Oyster Farms. We learned all about oysters (how they are grown, harvested and shipped). We watched some workers shucking the oysters. The photo shown was taken through glass but you can see the pile of oysters they were working on. On the way out to tour the dock area, we were each treated to a sample of an oyster cooked in the shell. They had a wonderful sauce on them and even the diehards had to admit these oysters were delicious. The weather was cold and rainy so we didn't go out on the docks but finished the tour under cover where we saw a string of oysters and watched workers getting them ready for shipping. I think everyone learned something from this trip and many went back in to purchase some tasty treats to take home. Thank you, Bob Abbott, for the great photos. Oh Dear…….Edith………Homer just came up on the back porch & I do believe he became very familiar with a SKUNK !!!!! 

 

WOW…..You got that right Fred !!!…...Not to worry……..I recently saw a helpful tip on the Fishing Club Web Site.   Let’s give it a try….Better yet….I will mix the Skunk Shampoo….& …..YOU will get friendly with HOMER…..Way Off of the back porch !!!

 

HOME MADE SKUNK SHAMPOO….&….IT REALLY WORKS !!!

 

1 Quart of Hydrogen Peroxide   +   1 half Cup of Baking Soda…+…1 tablespoon of Liquid Dishwashing Soap…Mix up the ingredients.

 

Now…just give your dog a bath (No…he or she will not turn Blond!!).   Do be a little careful about getting the shampoo in your doggies eyes.

 

Believe me…this recipe will come in real handy someday…if you have an inquisitive dog !!!!                   THE HOOK

FEBRUARY BIG CREEK & BEVERLY BEACH LITTER PATROL SCHEDULES:

 

Hello You All….yes it’s time for us to begin Litter & Beach Patrols. Here are the schedules for both Fun February Events !!!

 

17 February @ 9 AM meet at the Club House for our 1^st Litter Patrol on BIG CREEK. This should not take to long, in as much as the Creek Meister has been hard at work. This will also have Big Creek looking “Spiffy” for our Trout Tune Up scheduled for 20 February !!!

 

24 February @ 9 AM meet at the Club House for our 1^st BEVERLY BEACH PATROL. We should be able to cover Mile 223 in about 2 hours…start to finish…This according to Brother Bob Abbott !!!  He also says, “It’s really great exercise, maybe we should charge for it.”

We had our monthly breakfast meeting at the Agate Beach Golf Course on February 1st. As always, we had a good turnout and a great breakfast.

I know most everyone has been involved with, or heard of "ebay". There was interest from the Club for what we will call "FISH BAY." We are currently working on this with Ron Thomas. This will become part of the LVH Fishing Club website. Any club member will be able to put an item for sale on the site or request an item they might like to buy (subject to possible censorship, of course). This will not just be limited to fishing related items. We will let you know as soon as it is up and running. We are also working on getting the calendar working on our website. Needless to say, poor Ron isn't going to be getting any rest with all the work he is doing for us. Thank you Teckron!

Our guest speaker was one of our own, Butch Mimich. Butch owns a small fly fishing shop in Seal Rock called "Goin'Fishin". He spoke to us about a miracle tool for tying knots called the "Cinch Tie" and showed us a video on how to use it. It was a little over my head but I heard a lot of "oohs" and "aahs" so I think it's pretty good.

Next meeting is February 15th. We will have a short meeting before departing for our tour of Oregon Oyster Farms.

First Lady

The Fishalong for Tuesday, January 30th, started off with about 10 of us meeting at the LVH Clubhouse at 7:00 a.m. There were three groups going to various locations. Wayde and I were not experienced with steelhead fishing so we went along for the ride and to watch and learn. We went to Moonshine Park to watch Kevin and Mike (see photos). It was 27 very cold degrees. I was beginning to wonder about the sanity of steelhead fishermen until I walked down to the river. What a beautiful sight! I am standing on a sandy bank looking across the river at a beautiful waterfall. That alone was worth getting up early and braving the cold for. I was impressed that these men were putting their hands in the cold water and then holding the rod as if it wasn't even cold out. While I was enjoying the view, Kevin gave Wayde some good advice and then we watched Kevin and Mike in action. As we watched, a boat floated downriver. The two men waved and then, after seeing me in my U of O coat, stated they were Beaver fans and World Champions. As they floated by my parting shot was "We're now in basketball season . . ." They waved but had no response. We then went up river to Cedar Creek to check on Wayne and his crew. They weren't having much luck either. We finished the drive by following the Siletz River to Kernville. It was very cold that morning but well worth rising early and facing the elements (although most of my elements were viewed through the windshield of the car) to watch the fishermen and see the beautiful views. After we got home Brian stopped by to show us his catch (see story below). It was a beautiful fish and seemed to make the memory of the cold morning disappear. I think I may be ready to try my hand at steelhead fishing. Thanks, Brian.

Hi everyone,

I thought it only fitting that Brian Hudson brought home the only steelhead from today's fish-a-long because of all the work he put into the planning, scouting, and mapping for today's event. Here are a few photos of the big prize that he landed on the Siletz about a mile above Moonshine Park. It was cold this morning, 26 degrees by my pickup's temp. gauge, but Brian's rapidly beating heart soon warmed up the river. We had not been fishing but a few minutes when he tied into the prize catch. At first he thought that he had gotten hung up on a rock but the rock started moving toward him. He played it for about 10 to 12 minutes until it got tired and then expertly brought it to shore with the assistance of his trusty sidekick, Frank. He used sand-shrimp with an orange corky as bait. My congratulations to Brian and I hope you enjoy the photos.

1 FEB. @ 9 AM       BREAKFAST MEETING at the Agate Beach Golf Course Restaurant. This will be a “Knotty” meeting!!  Yes, that’s what I said, Butch Munich is going to show us the way of KNOTS. He also has a nifty gadget that may even make the life of The Hook a bit easier!! We will provide line so we all can practice our new skills. I apologize for last meetings seating disruption. We have worked with the restaurant management to obviate that problem in the future. Hope to see you all at our fun

15 FEB. @ 9 AM    GENERAL MEMBERSHIP MEETING….We will conduct a short meeting in preparation for our departure to the OREGON OYSTER FARMS. The Wrench (aka Brian Hudson) will coordinate car pool formation & he will also speak to us about the 2007 Fishing Activity Schedule posted on “The Wall”. This Oyster Farm Tour should be fun & informative. Our goal is to arrive at The Farm about 10:30 AM. Don’t miss this fun adventure & feel free to bring a guest, spouse or a friend (if you have one)!!!

The Lower Umpqua Flycasters is offering a Fly Fishing Expo on Saturday, February 24th. It will be at the Reedsport High School, 22nd Street and Highway 101 from 9:00am to 4:00pm. There will be fly tying, fly casting demos, equipment displays, information tables and displays by various stream and fish enhancement groups.A concession stand will solve your hunger urge and there will be FREE door prizes and raffle drawings. Among the tyers demonstrating their talents will be CCFF member, John Peterson. John is a former member of the Lower Umpqua club. He knows Frank Moore, owner of the famous Steam Boat Inn on the Umpqua, and a certified FFF Casting Instructor, who normally shows up at these meetings to share his expertise. John believes attending will be a learning and motivating experience for CCFF members who make the short drive to Reedsport. I've added it to my calendar and would hope we will have a good number of our folks there. By the way, it's free, always a good thing. The Oregon Council FFF Expo will be in Albany on March 9th and 10th and will be another valuable experience for those who can attend. So far, I'm aware of at least seven CCFF members who are planning to be there.
Our next meeting is February 8th.

FIRST LITTER PATROL OF 2007

Here are some photos of The First Litter Patrol at Big Creek on January 19, 2007. As Big Hook said, "Not bad for a couple of desperadoes." There will be regular patrols formed soon so keep your eyes open for dates and times.

Monday, January 15th and the Team Steelhead (Wayne Hill, Dave Dinsmoor, Wayde and Barb Dudley) headed out for the Schooner Creek Fish Trap. Obviously, as shown by the photos, this was no job for wimps. The top picture is the first view we had of the trap after leaving our parked (and warm) vehicles. The second photo shows Wayde and Dave discussing the new cover on the fish trap and the third photo shows Wayne going into the trap to check for fish. Unfortunately, there weren't any in the trap so he just cleaned it out and we called it good. Then there's Wayde having to thaw the guard chain hasp. Lastly, is Wayne's vehicle coming down the road toward the gate to the main road. As you can see, it was beautiful there and well worth the drive even if the dedicated team did not find any fish in the trap.

A HISTORIC DAY (4 JANUARY 2007)

Yes….our recent Breakfast Meeting resulted in several Historic Milestones for our Fishing Club:

1. We welcomed 4 New Members to our ranks…Dale & Jeanette Rice…Jack Blower…&…Hank Bryson (Hank has the honor of being our 50th Member) !!!

2. The Membership supported a motion to formally adopt 1 mile of Beverly Beach. We have set in motion the appropriate procedures to do so.

3. The Membership also supported a motion to pass the “Old Fishing Hat” once a year, at our January & February Meetings. What that means is that all Club Members agreed to contribute 5 Bucks to the Clubs “Coffee Fund.” Our Administrative Officer, Frank Stout, will begin collecting your “Big 5” at our 18 Jan. Meeting. What you get for your hard earned cash is a standing invitation to our August Club Birthday Party & our annual Christmas “Joe Longo Award” Celebration, Free entrance to our Salmon Club Tournament. These funds will also cover periodic administrative costs & our ongoing need for Coffee/Cream at our meetings.

All of the Club Officers very much appreciate your support of these vital issues & we pledge to you our commitment to protect the integrity of this very fine Fishing Club for 2007 & the years to come.

JOE LONGO AWARD

The Longview Hills Fishing Club had its last meeting of 2006 on Thursday, December 21st. The 1st Annual Joe Longo Award was presented to Jack Scherer for 2005 and Charles Burke for 2006. Both of these men have helped to make the LVH Fishing Club the wonderful organization it is and the appreciation of the club members was evident in the great turnout we had. Michele Longo Eder, Joe Longo's daughter, was the guest of honor. She brought pictures of her father and told a few stories of his childhood in New York, as well as talking about her childhood and the wisdom passed on to her by her father. It was truly enjoyed by everyone. She then helped present the award to Jack and Charles, which made it even more special. There were lots of goodies to eat and lots of fish stories to go around. It was a great way to end the year.

All LVH Fishing Club members can view the award plaque on the Fishing Club wall in the Club House.
