We had a special meeting of the LVH Fishing Club on October 30th at the Clubhouse. President John Spangler introduced our special guests Dean Fleck and Don Mann.

Bud Roark told about catching his big salmon. Wayde Dudley made the comment it was a sign of the times when someone got a round of applause for catching a salmon . . .
Dean Fleck thanked the LVH Fishing Club for all the volunteer hours they spend, with special thanks for help with the U-DA-MAN Tournament. He talked about the tournament as well as some fishery issues and then introduced our special guest Don Mann.
Don Mann, general manager of the Port of Newport, gave an interesting and informative slide show on the repair of the International Dock currently underway. This project is vital to Newport as it will bring jobs, necessary income from the distant fishing fleet as well as possible tourism dollars from cruise ships. Of special importance to us all will be the fact that in the event of a tsunami caused by an earthquake this dock will stay in place and could possibly be "Ground Zero" and the point where all goods and services will originate from.

We were all invited to tour the project which will more than likely be a future trip for the members of the LVH Fishing Club and several of us will now keep a close watch on the progress of this project which is so vital to Newport, Lincoln County and the Oregon Coast.

Mr. Mann also stated his door was always open and invited everyone to feel free to contact him at his Port office with any questions.

Walter Chuck also presented us with an update of the marine reserve situation as it pertains to Newport. We appreciate Walt keeping a close eye on this and reporting back to us.

Thanks to all our speakers. It is great when we can be entertained and informed at the same time.

We are looking for more good people who would like to get out in the woods once in a while. There is something for everyone to do even if you are not in the best of shape. It requires only a short walk to the trap.

So far, the following preliminary trap teams have been set to man the fish trap each Monday through the trapping season. We can use extra HELP on each team. (If anyone who is not signed up would like to join a team or just become an alternate, simply reply to this email and you will be placed. If you would like to just give it a try before you decide just call the team leader for the date you would like to go and tag along.
TEAM CHINOOK: Bill Furgason*, John Spangler, Bob Abbott, Bud Roark
TEAM COHO: Wayde Dudley*, Barb Dudley, Wayne Hill
TEAM STEELHEAD: Frank Stout*, Brian Hudson, Hank Bryson

ALTERNATES: Alan Canfield

*denotes team leader
Each team leader is responsible for organizing the manpower necessary to accomplish the task on the scheduled day for each team. The leader needs to make sure the fish tally paperwork is filled out and a report with the names of the individuals that went to the trap, the hours each spent from the time they leave until they return, and the driver(s) and mileage. Get the paperwork to Wayde Dudley and pass the gate key to the next team leader on the schedule.
SCHEDULE FOR DUTY (Mark your calendars):
Team Chinook (Bill): 11/10, 12/1, 12/22, 1/12, 2/2, 2/23, 3/16, 4/5, 4/26
Team Coho (Wayde): 11/3, 11/24, 12/15, 1/5, 1/26, 2/16, 3/9, 3/30, 4/19
Team Steelhead (Frank): 10/27, 11/17, 12/8, 12/29, 1/19, 2/9, 3/2, 3/23, 4/12
Note: From time to time James Ray may call up and request our assistance on other days and we will look for volunteers to help out.

Mark your calendars..........................

The LVH Fishing Club has a planned outing to Schooner Creek on Tuesday, Oct. 21, 2008. The purpose is to brush the edges of the road, clear tree branches, cut some grass and install a new ladder in the fish trap. ODF&W will provide a chainsaw, a heavy duty weed whacker, a machete, gas and oil. LVH FC will provide a generator, electric and gas hedge trimmers, weed eater and a machete. John Spangler has volunteered to prepare a simple BBQ lunch of burgers, hot dogs, chips and cookies. This will be a good outing and a worthwhile cause. The club will begin servicing the trap on Monday, Oct. 27. Plan on bringing gloves, boots and appropriate clothing for the weather that morning. The group will leave the LVH clubhouse at 8:30am and caravan to Schooner Creek. Feel free to join in as this will not be very labor intensive and there will be things everyone can do. James Ray and Casey Deckard of ODF&W plan to join us.

The U-DA-MAN Fishing Tournament is just around the corner on October 12th. Last Monday, September 29th, several volunteers got together to clean up the old boat ramp at the South Beach Marina. It was a messy job but with lots of help everyone made quick work of it. Luckily, I had the camera so got out of having to do much. Good job everyone!
