What follows are several issues the Club Officer’s will be speaking to over the closing months of the remaining year (2006):

(1) NEW CLUB OFFICERS---All of the Club Officers are tendering their resignations, which will become effective on the last Club Meeting of the year ,21 December 2006. This is in keeping with our Ethos of all Club Officers serving at the pleasure of the membership. It also allows for Club Officers who may wish to stand down to do so gracefully. To that end, effectively immediately all Club Members & Associates are encouraged to begin thinking about submitting nominations for all of the officer positions, i.e. (Pres.---V.P.---Ops.---Admin.---PAO). Big Fish will begin collecting your nominees, and we will prepare a ballot for a vote at our meeting on 16 November. All Members & Associates are strongly encouraged to be involved in this vital Club Process.

(2) BREAKFAST MEETINGS---Based on feedback to our recent poll. An overwhelming majority of you want to “test” holding the Club Meeting Breakfasts Monthly. To that end, beginning on 5 October and running thru December, we will hold the breakfasts monthly. At that time the New Club Officers will asses the situation, with your input, about how to proceed into the New Year.

(3) JOE LONGO AWARD---Poll results clearly support Charles Burke as the 2006 recipient of this years annual award. We will be presenting the award at our last meeting of the year on 21 December 2006.

(4) CLUB BALL CAPS---Sparky will begin taking orders for additional CBC’s. As you may recall, we will need a minimum of 12 caps to place an order. This will allow us to keep the cost of the caps at 10 Bucks each. If you want a cap let Ron Gibbs know or send an email to Big Fish.

(5) SALMON ON THE ALSEA---Stay tuned for more information. Big Fish is working with various Club Members, who own suitable boats, to coordinate this fun Fish Along Event. We hope to pull this off sometime during the last week of September.

(6) NEW POLL---We have reviewed all of this years Speakers, Field Trips, Events & Fish Alongs and now it is time for you all to give us your sense of what you would like us to try to repeat as we go into the new year. Big Fish will be putting this poll out to you in the not to distant future. We hope to give you feedback on/or before 7 December. We would welcome any fresh ideas you all might have for us to consider going into the New Year.

(7) ETHOS STATEMENT---You all are encouraged to take a moment and re-read our Club Ethos Statement. Does it, in your opinion, still accurately reflect what our Club stands for? Please feel free to give us any thoughts you may have regarding how we may be able to improve our Club’s relevance to “you” and other Members & Associates. This is especially important as we begin looking forward to the New Year ahead of us.

Season boasts strange sights, good fishing................

Published: September 7, 2006
Can you imagine launching at Garibaldi, crossing the bar and catching a halibut minutes later in 40 feet rather than over 40 fathoms (240 feet) of water? That's what's occurred recently as the ‘dead zone,' an expanse of water low in oxygen, has ‘buts seeking more comfortable conditions in shallow water by the bell at the T-Bay entrance.

Halibut sport fishery extended..................

The all-depth Pacific halibut sport fishery will be open off the central Oregon coast from Cape Falcon to Humbug Mountain every Friday through Sunday starting today (Sept. 8) through the earlier of quota attainment or Oct. 29. As more than 28,000 pounds remain in the quota, the daily bag limit has been increased to two fish.In addition, the nearshore Pacific halibut fishery remains open seven days a week inside of the 40-fathom curve (defined by waypoints) through the earlier of quota attainment or Oct. 31. The daily bag limit is one fish on days that are not open to all-depth fishing.

On to the report... Oregon Fisheries Update

Willamette Valley/Metro - The current minus tide series is dovetailing nicely with run timing for the upriver bright Chinook run on the lower Columbia River. Metro anglers are scoring excellent results from the mouth of the Sandy River to Longview using chrome and rainbow wobblers fishing near the shipping channel ledges. With a 5-foot leader and nearly as long of a dropper lead line, working the 35 to 52 foot depths, multiple opportunities are likely on the outgoing tides this upcoming week. The last part of the outgoing tide has been productive using Kwikfish to draw strikes reports pro guide Brandon McGavran (360-607-1327). Brandon has been one of the most consistent guides in this fishery. The limit remains one Chinook salmon per angler but fin-clipped steelhead or coho are also allowed but making up only a fraction of the catch. This will be the peak week for the lower Columbia River below Bonneville Dam.

NORTHWEST ZONE FISHING

Most Mid-Coast Rivers are open for salmon, steelhead and cutthroat trout fishing. Anglers are encouraged to consult the regulations prior to fishing a particular river.
ALSEA RIVER: Cutthroat trout fishing is open. Fall Chinook season is just getting under way with reports of a few fish starting to get caught in tide water. Typically, strong numbers start showing up in early September. Current river levels and forecasts can be found at www.nwrfc.noaa.gov/river/station/flowplot/flowplot.cgi?TIDO3.

Hello you All, this intended to give you a “Heads Up” on what I see on our calendar for the month of September. You may recall Mary & I will be up on the Metolius River for the first full week of September. This will be my last opportunity to do some real, Trout, fly fishing before the fall Steelhead & Salmon run. Sparky will be gone during that same time frame----so----the job of hosting the 1st meeting in Sept. will fall on Big Fish.

7 Sept. @ 9 AM Breakfast Meeting at the Agate Beach Golf Course Restaurant. As always, this should be a fun social gathering of Fishermen & Friends. Members are reminded that guests are always invited to attend any of our meetings and/or events. Come one, Come all with your latest fishing stories and enjoy this fun bi-monthly event !!

21 Sept. @ 9 AM General Membership Meeting. We will be having two guest presenters. Alan Canfield will be joined by his son Doug Canfield and they will be showing us, and explaining how to use, the necessary fishing gear we will need to fish for Salmon. What we hope to do, is use Alan & Doug’s presentation as a preview for a Fish Along, down on the Alsea River, using various boats owned by our members. You all will be hearing more about this as Big Fish gets this put together. Keep a sharp eye on your E-Mail traffic regarding this fun (late Sept.—early Oct.) event.

Litter Patrol………..We may not need to schedule a formal Litter Patrol this Month. What we see happening is a reduced Big Creek visitor pattern and Big Fishes Bag Experiment along the upper & lower reservoir’s seems to be working very well. Perhaps, all that will be required is a bag change at the various stations & some minimal pick up work. Big Fish will let us know what kind of “People Power” he may need. Watch your EM Traffic for more information on this issue.

Fish Along on the Alsea……………Stay tuned for EM Traffic on this issue !!!

Newport News-Times: Crabbers sue to block crab pots reallocation:
By Joel Gallob Of the News-Times

A coalition of Oregon Dungeness crab fishermen and two crab fishing-related businesses last week filed a petition seeking court review of a decision by the Oregon Fish and Wildlife Commission which, they say, unfairly reallocated the number of crab pots that can be deployed from fishing vessels harvesting crab.
