SCHOONER CREEK TRAP RUN (12/22/08)

SCHOONER CREEK TRAP RUN                   ( 22 December 2008 ……. 3 Men & 54 Miles Round Trip)

Seasons Greetings from Team Chinook >><< We had a beautiful Trap Run AM today.  Just when we hit the gravel road, we found snow all along the road & into the Trap. There was lots of water moving in the Creek & Casey did a Great Job of directing flow into the Trap.

We found No Fish, but the Head Gate was full of debris which Bill cleared & Bud did some work on the Front of the Trap.  I managed to just make a Trap Log Entry & Look Very Busy !!!!

Actually, we had a really fun, relatively dry, morning, but then it started to do a rain/sleet/snow mix just as we were pulling up the Steep Grade out of the Trap …. No problem >><< We used the Chevy Trail Blazer in 4 High & Marched up the Hill & back to the Road Gate. It was Clear Sailing the rest of the way home……….

Oregon ocean conditions best for fish in 50 years - Oregon Environmental News & Articles – OregonLive.com

Oregon ocean conditions best for fish in 50 years - Oregon Environmental News & Articles – OregonLive.com: "Surveys along the coast from Newport north to LaPush, Wash., found more juvenile chinook salmon than they've seen in the 11 years the surveys have been done, researchers said.

That suggests that the Northwest could see a salmon boom once those fish mature and migrate back to their home rivers in the next few years.

That would represent a welcome contrast to the last few years."

John,

Thanks for update on the holiday gathering; it sounds like it was a great event and I'm sorry I could not attend.  I would like to use the closing out of the year to express my gratitude, once again, for all of the assistance that the LVH members provide to ODFW.  I do not need to explain to you how important your support is to the agency.  However, in addition to the working relationship that your club and ODFW has developed I'd like to express my appreciation for the personal working relationship that the members of your club have with Casey and myself.  I know I also speak for Casey when I say we thoroughly enjoy our camaraderie with all the members of your club and getting out in the field with you guys (and gal) is something we look forward to.

So please forward my sincerest best wishes to all the members of the club as we get ready to face another year.

Thanks

James

Gentlemen,

I wanted to let you know that Casey was able to work on the Schooner Creek trap today to address the flow issue. He did a great job at restoring the flow by digging a channel into the existing gravel bed and using some sandbags to direct flow into the trap. This is obviously only a short term remedy and will need to be constantly adjusted as the flows come up and go down; however, until we are able get an excavator in the stream next summer it will be the method we will use for the rest of the season. If you keep us informed of the flow conditions we will be able to periodically make the adjustments by doing further digging and raking of the gravel channel. Alternatively if you feel that you are able and willing to make the adjustments yourselves then that would also help us out a great deal.

Thanks for the updates that made us aware of these problems, we appreciate you being our eyes on the ground.

John, please forward this to the LVH trap crews.

Thanks for everything.

James

ON THE WATER FOR DECEMBER (2008)

ON THE WATER FOR DECEMBER               (2008)

OK >> SPORTSFANS >< IT’S RIVALRY WEEKEND >&< THAT MEANS >< OREGON “CIVIL WAR” FOOTBALL >&< THE WINNER  IS >>>> (I am holding the Press, until I find out) >>>  ( DUCKS >> 65 ) >><< ( BEAVERS >> 38 )   FINAL !!!!!  GO DUCKS !!!

Well, now that we have that Exciting Event taken care of for another year, we can get on with NOVEMBER “Fish’in Club Bid’ness” & Other Stuff !!!   This has been a very busy month, what with a Bunch of SPECIAL DAYS >> Election, Veterans, Thanksgiving & Then there were some other IMPORTANT DAYS like>> CERT Helo, Schooner Creek Bridge Retro-Fit, Aquatic Angler Program Meeting, Salmon Derby Ends, New 2009 Club Officers & the Newport International Pier Tour …….. I may have missed a day or two in there some place, but you get the idea >&< I didn’t even mention that we have a “Sort of Deal’ on New Commercial Ground Fish Regulations, a “Definite Maybe” on 2 Oregon Coastal Marine Reserves, a “Possible Death Sentence” on “Maybe 85” Salmon Eating Sea Lions on the Columbia River & on a more positive Columbia River Note, Sonar shows that the Celilo Falls, which were inundated, in 1957 by the Dalles Dam, are still Falling, albeit under water……Talk about Information Over Load !!!!

Let’s touch upon a couple of Nov. Issues >>><< Hope You All had a nice “Turkey Day” & Hope You All saw First Lady’s “Bridge Repair” Pix Album ….. This was a really fun & constructive project. We had the pleasure of recognizing BUTCH MINICH for Rounding Up All of the Construction Materials at NO COST to ODFW >><< Butch insists, that we mention, that it took a WHOLE BUNCH of Fine Folks, representing CCFF, ANWS & LVH who “Pitched In” to make this “Combined Fishing Club Project” turn out so well. As to the AAP Meeting, held at ODFW Headquarters in Salem, Brian Hudson continues to be our Coastal Program Leader. To that end, for our 3ed year, the Newport Middle School has, again, invited us to run this Outstanding Oregon Youth Fishing / Sewardship Program. As previously mentioned, our 2008 Salmon Derby Ends at Midnight, 30 November …… Right now it’s “Looking Good” for Brother Phil Reed … BUT … It’s not over “Till the Fat lady Sings”!!  Lurching right along, you can find the 2009 Roster of New Officers posted on the Fishing Club WALL in the Club House. On behalf of all of the Officers who have agreed to serve again for 2009, we very much appreciate your votes, which make our new term of office official ….. Let me mention a Friend of Our Club who is having a Tough “Health” Time right now >< Please put Chief Tom McAdams on your Angel List >>&<< It is with Great Sadness, that I mention the recent loss of 2 Fishermen on the Tillamook Bar…….. I sure hope you were able to make the NITP Tour. Barb’s PIX will give you some idea of what we saw & the magnitude of this very important Port of Newport / Yaquina Bay Project. What we came away from this tour with, is a strong affirmation that the people charged with the responsibility to accomplish this project really know what they are doing. Their actions, every step of the way, are based on Good Science & Engineering Principles & they have the very best interest of our Beloved Yaquina Bay & Subsequent Generations right up there at “The Top of their Priority List” …………

Let’s slide on into DECEMBER >><< I am still struggling, as I do each year, with “The Decision” <<??>> Do I put up the Outside Christmas Lights or Not ??  By the time my column “Hits the Street”, you can drive by my home & see what my decision turned out to be !!!  What I do not have any equivocation about, are the Fun Holiday Events we have planned for this month. Specifically, the Winner of the 2008 Salmon Derby will be announced at our Breakfast Meeting & the BIGGIE of the MONTH will be our 18 Dec. CHRISTMAS PARTY >><< There will be lots of Goodies to Enjoy & Best of All, we will be able to Honor & “Roast” our good friend BRIAN HUDSON as our 2008 JOE LONGO AWARD WINNER. Prior to putting Brian through “The Hoops” we will recognize a Member of our Club who always manages to “Stay Just Under the Radar” but is always there when we need a “Good Hand” ….. Don’t miss the Christmas Party to find out who this “Mystery Member” is !!!  And then there is Christmas Day >><< If all goes well 1 of our sons, Mark, will be with us & he has already indicated a strong interest in “Hooking Up” with one of the Siletz Trap Teams to make a Trap Run. As we get closer, I’ll try to set this up for Mark & I to go along with the Lead Team Trapper.

In closing, Mary & I have decided, that we are not going to send Christmas Cards this year >><< So allow us to extend, from our Home to Yours, our Warmest Holiday Greetings to Each & Everyone of You >>&<< May the True Spirit of the Holiday Season Bless Us All.

Well, that’s the Top of the News as it Looks from Here …. Hope to See You On The Water ……..  THE HOOK

Several members of the LVH Fishing Club met at the Schooner Creek Trap to build a railing for the bridge over the creek. We had a few hitches in our get-a-long but we finally made it and have the finished product to prove it.

I had an e-mail this morning from Jason Wilcox (US Forest Service) and he wanted to thank the Longview Hills Fishing Club for all their help, specifically for the bridge work yesterday. Just wanted to pass that along as it is always nice to be appreciated.

Thursday, November 13, 2008

Wayde and I went up to the trap this morning to get a measurement for the bridge railing. We had quite a surprise! The normally calm, blue, serene Schooner Creek was a brown, fast moving river. Wayde cleaned the grate as best he could (we couldn't lift it) and, if you look carefully, you can see the difference in the level of water in front of the gate and in the trap. Naturally, we postponed the bridge work scheduled for Friday.

**** Did I mention that on Midnight >> 30 NOVEMBER << Our 2008 SALMON DERBY DRAWS TO A CLOSE !!!  (Good Luck)   THE HOOK

We had a special meeting of the LVH Fishing Club on October 30th at the Clubhouse. President John Spangler introduced our special guests Dean Fleck and Don Mann.

Bud Roark told about catching his big salmon. Wayde Dudley made the comment it was a sign of the times when someone got a round of applause for catching a salmon . . .
Dean Fleck thanked the LVH Fishing Club for all the volunteer hours they spend, with special thanks for help with the U-DA-MAN Tournament. He talked about the tournament as well as some fishery issues and then introduced our special guest Don Mann.
Don Mann, general manager of the Port of Newport, gave an interesting and informative slide show on the repair of the International Dock currently underway. This project is vital to Newport as it will bring jobs, necessary income from the distant fishing fleet as well as possible tourism dollars from cruise ships. Of special importance to us all will be the fact that in the event of a tsunami caused by an earthquake this dock will stay in place and could possibly be "Ground Zero" and the point where all goods and services will originate from.

We were all invited to tour the project which will more than likely be a future trip for the members of the LVH Fishing Club and several of us will now keep a close watch on the progress of this project which is so vital to Newport, Lincoln County and the Oregon Coast.

Mr. Mann also stated his door was always open and invited everyone to feel free to contact him at his Port office with any questions.

Walter Chuck also presented us with an update of the marine reserve situation as it pertains to Newport. We appreciate Walt keeping a close eye on this and reporting back to us.

Thanks to all our speakers. It is great when we can be entertained and informed at the same time.

Tuesday, October 28, 2008

We are looking for more good people who would like to get out in the woods once in a while. There is something for everyone to do even if you are not in the best of shape. It requires only a short walk to the trap.

Each team leader is responsible for organizing the manpower necessary to accomplish the task on the scheduled day for each team. The leader needs to make sure the fish tally paperwork is filled out and a report with the names of the individuals that went to the trap, the hours each spent from the time they leave until they return, and the driver(s) and mileage. Get the paperwork to Wayde Dudley and pass the gate key to the next team leader on the schedule.
SCHEDULE FOR DUTY (Mark your calendars):
Team Chinook (Bill): 11/10, 12/1, 12/22, 1/12, 2/2, 2/23, 3/16, 4/5, 4/26
Team Coho (Wayde): 11/3, 11/24, 12/15, 1/5, 1/26, 2/16, 3/9, 3/30, 4/19

SCHOONER CREEK TRAP (2008)

SCHOONER CREEK FISH TRAP >>>> IS NOW OPEN FOR WINTER BUSINESS >>>>>>>>> (21 October 2008)

What a GREAT DAY we had getting the Access Road & Trap Open for the Winter Run of Salmon & Steelhead. We had 14 Stalwart Members of our fine Fishing Club involved in clearing brush from the road & installing a new entry/egress ladder at the trap. It should also be mentioned that we had a CHUCK WAGON that “Burned some Berger’s & Dogs” for the Hungry Work Crew. Special Thanks are in order for  Dean Fleck, of  Englund Marine, who donated all of the Stainless Steel Fasteners, which enabled Brian Hudson & Butch Minich to secure the ladder for, as they said, another 50 years !!!!

NOW >><<  The real work begins >><<  Effective on Monday, 27 Oct 2008, & every following Monday, over the Winter Months, our Fishing Club will be sending Trapper Teams into the trap to collect Critical Data, which will be used by ODFW Biologists to make Sustainability Determinations regarding the Salmon & Steelhead using Schooner Creek as a Spawning Habitat.

PLEASE >>< Consider becoming a member of one of our Trapper Teams >><< If you are so inclined, contact Wayne “Big Fish” Hill & he will be glad to explain what is involved & help you fit into our Trap Team Servicing Schedule >>>> I can assure you …….. You will find it to be a fun & rewarding experience ……..
