Dear John,

Oregon Shores would like to invite you to a town hall meeting this coming Wednesday, May 12, on “Development of a Gray Whale Protection Device," sponsored by the OSU Marine Mammal Institute.  The event is scheduled from 7:00 to 8:30 p.m. in the Hennings Auditorium at the Hatfield Marine Science Center's Visitor Center, located at 2030 SE Marine Science Center Dr. in Newport.

As you know, there is great interest in harnessing wave energy off the Oregon Coast. An important issue in ocean renewable energy development is the risk of gray whales becoming entangled in or colliding with ocean renewable energy device mooring systems. The Marine Mammal Institute at OSU plans to test the effectiveness of an acoustic deterrence device to protect whales if these ocean renewable energy device mooring systems become a hazard for them. Scientists and acoustic experts think that, if successful, this device also could be used to deter whales from other calamities, like oil spills.

The purpose of this meeting is to inform local residents and interested parties about the study and to provide an opportunity to address questions or concerns. Oregon Shores will provide an introduction then scientists will present an overview of the study along with detailed information sheets about the project. After the presentation, Dr. Bruce Mate, director of the Marine Mammal Institute at OSU, will answer questions about the study.

If you would like more information, please contact Oregon Shores’ Ocean Program Director Robin Hartmann at 541-672-3694 or robin@oregonshores.org --  or the Marine Mammal Institute, at 541-867-0202 or MMI_Web@oregonstate.eduHope to see you there.

I got a call and had the chance to take two guys out for a late winter/early summer steelhead trip, river was 5.5' and deep green color, we lanuched at Twin Bridges and headed for Mill Park take out, right of the bat we started hooking and releasing the Palmer Creek fin clipped steelhead the LVH club feed and took care of. For the whole ten mile float, we hooked and released smotls, if those little guys werent taken our bait, they were jumping all around the boat, other boaters also comemted on the smolts also. you guys did a good job feeding and getting them into the river, as for the fish score, we hooked and released three native steelhead, one was huge, close to 18 lbs, it was a wet and cool day, but the guys had a good time.  As long as we have a wet spring and the river stays up, any one who wants to book a steelhead trip, just call, the Siletz Summer Steelhead and Spring Chinook are just around the corner. Fish ON!
