Derek Wilson has ask for a few people he can refer callers to for information on local fishing.
I volunteered to put a list together of those willing to speak to a caller and provide some information such as where, when, gear, etc.

I've put together a list of subjects that you can put an X next to and I will fold it all into a single list.  It will require your name and at least one phone #.

Just "X" next to the subjects and return the email to me:

Note: You may see this message twice since some belong to multiple groups, but all I need is one reply.

John,

Great to hear from you!  Sorry it has taken me a little while to respond but i was away in CA over the holiday season and once I got back it was all go.  Believe it or not i'm still on a part-time contract working long distance for ODFW finishing the Spring Chinook report.  Problem with these things is that there are so many folks involved it takes forever to get everyone on the same page.  The last two that were written took four years each!  We are now at two years and almost done so that's the silver lining i'm holding onto.

I'm also working on a project as a research assistant up here in Juneau.  We are looking at the population dynamics of Sea Ducks (specifically Surf Scoters), which involves catching them, measuring them, putting radio transmitters on some of them and then tracking them to observe their foraging behaviour.  So now the cry 'GO DUCKS' has a whole new meaning for me (my commiserations about the rose bowl).

Sarah is doing well in her new job, is finding a lot of reward in the students and is enjoying her new colleagues.

There has not been much fishing activity to speak of because it is the off season here.  However, i plan to take a beginners fly fishing class at the university in the spring and will be testing out the CCFF flies.  Also looking forward to the Chinook returning in May.

I had heard that you folks have really stepped up to the plate to help us out since Casey's accident.  I know that Derek is very appreciative of that and speaks about it a lot.  It sounds like he doesn't know if he is coming or going at the moment, particularly with the extended absence of a STEP Bio.  Anyway i'd also like to once again extend my gratitude to you and the active club members.  You always come through for us.

Please give my warmest regards to everyone there and give Barb a hug from me.  Although i'm lucky that things are going well up here for us (apart from the constant shovelling of the driveway) I miss Oregon, Newport and all the great folks i know there.

Take care,

James

p.s. how did i manage without a pocket knife before you gave me one!!!

Not enough fishing during the winter? Need some reminders about what it is like? Here are a few photos and Linda Reed's report on a fishing trip she took with "Hudson Guide Service" last November:

High wind warning and rain advisory for last night and this morning. What us worry over a little bad weather when fishing? Nah............
Wayde and Frank came down to Waldport to pick up Linda to meet Brian at his home by 5 AM. Then on to Siltcoos Lake, launch the boat, rig the rods in the dark, get on location for daybreak fishing to the Coho hiding there, not knowing there in for some big trouble from 3 expert fishermen and 1 expert fisherwoman?
We had it all! Flat fish, wiggle warts, spinners in all colors, lures, multiple scents, salmon roe, herring, fish the surface, fish the middle and the bottom. Cast and troll the entire lake carefully and with purpose, led by Captain Brian, assisted by a capable master crew of Frank and Wayde, with Linda still in the LVHFC midshipman training program .
On your mark go!
We fished and we fished and we went through our 4 tackle boxes of the newest and best sure fire items, prettiest colored spinners you ever will see, yummy scent on everything no fish could possibly reject? OK.............time for the roe and the herring they can't possibly not want?
Hmmmmmmmmmmm? Well lets fish different levels of water, since they just don't know what they are missing down there?
Did I fail to mention the high wind, rain and even hail that besieged us as we through everything we had against these dump fish.?
Lets' try a second pass on these ignorant fish. We are experts, don't they know that? Why Linda has spent the whole week on the internet studying Coho habitat and preferences. I've even went to Salmon University to get the best training I could get for these moron fish.
It is now about 2 PM and these dumb fish have yet to succumb to our wonderful, diverse, tasty, eye pleasing offerings? We are shocked?
I get it! There must not be any fish here to be caught, right? UH....................maybe, just maybe the fish just don't want to play today? After all, it is the Sabbath and all God's creatures get a day off sometime don't they? Maybe we should have taken the day off too, ya think? Now that you mention it, I am wet, cold and tired, maybe we should just do like the fish and take the rest of the day? We all agreed.
Summation: No bites, no catches, no releases, no nibbles, no lost tackle, but we had a great time together and a break from the everyday rat race for a few hours in the eternal contest of man versus the fish. Today FISH=1 MAN=0
THAT'S ALL FOLKS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! (woody wood pecker song..............)

The best part of taking pictures is when you get to go through them a few weeks later and relive a moment. We had such a great time at our Christmas party in December and it is fun to go through and see so many dear friends. I hope you enjoy reliving the moment as much as I did. Again, congratulations (well deserved) to Bud Roark on being the recipient of the Joe Longo Award for 2009!
