HEADS UP TO ALL OREGON BOAT OWNERS !!!!!

AQUATIC INVASIVE SPECIES PREVENTION PERMITS >>> ( Article in the Sunday Oregonian, dtd 12/27/09 )

This FEE is NEW for 2010 & there are a lot of “If, Ands or Buts” involved with this Annual $7.00 Boating Fee !~!~!

The thing I noticed, with my preliminary reading is that this fee, in addition to applying to a ALL Motorized Boats >< Will also apply to ALL BOATS Over 10 Feet in Length & that will include Boats that are Paddled, Rowed or Kicked >< Heads Up Fly Fishermen, et al  !~!~!

The intent of this New Boating Fee is to raise about $2.3 Million Dollars, which will be used to pay for 5 AISP Inspection Teams. These Mobile Teams will be equipped with High Pressure “Hot Water” Washing Units, which will be rotated around various locations throughout the state.

If you are an Oregon Boater, it would be Very Wise to check into this “New Wrinkle” for 2010 >< The Oregon State Police Fish & Wildlife Troopers will be enforcing these New Regulations, which have a 1st Time Violation Citation of $152 Bucks >> (Ouch !!)         THE HOOK

SCHOONER TRAP REPORT (13 Nov 09)

SCHOONER CREEK FISH TRAP REPORT < for > Friday, 13 Nov. 2009

Team Chinook >>> 4 Men & 54 Miles R/T.          Fish Count >>>>>>>> 2 Male COHO & 1 Native Male Steel Head all passed Upstream.

Hello Casey >< This is the 1st in our series of Trap Operations Reports, which we hope will make you feel very much a part of what we do in the Bush & at the Traps.    (Hang Tough Casey!!)

Our Run Today was made without any rain, but it was a little chilly. We had a full team with Captain Bill, Bud Roark, Larry Dale & Me. Bill opted to be the Trap Man today & he initially found 2 beautiful Male COHO, which Larry passed to Bud, who is our Stream Release Man. The last fish Bill found was a healthy Native Male Steel Head, which we passed upstream. We had moderate water flow with minimum debris in the Trap.

Once again Bud defied “All Odd” & got out of the Creek with his Waders Dry Inside !!!  Of course, I deftly handled the Driving & the Clipboard Duties.  Bill & Larry secured the Trap & then we all Saddled Up & Pulled for home.

What a Team & We always have Fun & a Bunch of Laughs >< Sorry to report, No Wild Life Sightings this trip.     JCS for Team Chinook

THIS IN FROM BRIAN NOVEMBER 11TH:

This in from Brian Hudson..........

Bob Cramer (Steelheader Treasurer and old Alaska hand) and I formed up and left the house at 5AM (O'dark thiry) and headed for the West Lake launch on Siltcoos. Our first experience at a DARK launch went reasonably well and we headed east to Maple Arm using the trusty GPS. WE were the first boat out, but not by much. We trollled some spinners/wiggle worts around the Arm for awhile, saw a jack and 6lb Coho caught, and met up with Dean Hendricks (North Country Flies and Lures) in his boat. Things were slow, (water was only 48 degrees) so we trolled on down to the SE looking for warmer water and found a shallow area around some reeds where we marked a lot of fish. Anchoring and casting toward the reeds, Bob first caught a nice Jack, then I hooked into what I thought was another Jack, but turned out to be a 14lb Coho hen. She did it all - jumps, runs, back and forth under the boat, but finally slid into the BIGGER NET. I say bigger net because, we first thought all we needed was the little trout net, but like JAWS, we soon needed the BIGGER NET! We went on to Fiddle Creek Arm where we met up with Dean Again and he did a video commercial for his lures using us and our fish (he had just pulled a nice 8lb Coho from the Arm). Moving on again, the wind was picking up on the main lake, so we skirted Booth Island, and right after Bob released a Coho smolt, an 8 pounder jumped all over his wiggle wort. Not having learned from our earlier experience, we thought it was just a small Jack, until it got near the boat and took off like Coho like to do. Back to the BIGGER NET! Bob ended the day with a daily one Jack/one Coho limit and I had my nice Coho. The lesson in all this is that you may not need a bigger boat, but you definitely should start with a BIGGER NET!

Photos to follow, when Bob figures out his computer/camera thing.
Brian

This in from Kevin McCarthy to John Spangler on November 10th:

John here is yesterdays & today's catch. I had to drag this fish one mile back to my truck with a roper, that's why it looks beat up.

I have enclosed a picture of the meat..35 lbs 42 inches.

Today's catch with camera on board. 18 lbs 31 inches.

This in from Dudley, Stout and Hudson on November 4th:

Frank and Wayde met Brian in Florence for a day of fishing on Siltcoos Lake south of Florence. The day nearly started with a tragedy with a close call in Yachats. On the north edge of town we came very close to hitting a person walking south in the travel lane. Frank made a nice move using the brakes and steering to avoid the collision. He may have potential to race with Bryan when the car gets finished.
We launched the boat near dawn and started trolling south. I had high hopes for a few coho because Frank and I both were using the latest, greatest, newest super-duper, no-fail, you betcha, guaranteed to catchem lure. We lowered the overall catch percentage for this lure though by not getting a single strike. We are blaming it on the full moon. We tried trolling and also throwing spinners and plugs in numerous places on the lake but no coho.
Frank caught a 14" rainbow on a plug. Brian caught the largest yellow perch of his life. It was a long and intense struggle but Brian prevailed. Frank and I were ready to pull anchor and follow the fish but Brian finally subdued it and the fish was boated. It tipped the ruler at a whopping 10 inches. Unfortunately I forgot to get a photo of the catch.
It was a great day for fishing and we had a good time. Will try again later this month.

Note: The pictures are of beautiful Siltcoos Lake. Unfortunately, Wayde didn't get any pictures of beautiful Brian and Frank catching fish . . .

This in from Frank from their fishing trip October 29th:

Half of the fish caught on Siltcoos Lake on Thursday were caught by the angling duo of Hudson and Stout. Unfortunately they were Jack Salmon rather than full size Coho. Wayde Dudley was not able to join us because of a leaking water heater than had to be replaced. It rained practically all day on the lake but the winds weren't too bad until the end of the day. Both fish were caught on the Fiddle Creek arm of the lake just around high tide at approximately 10:30 am. We saw one other fish caught at that location and another caught by a man rowing a pontoon boat on the Maple Creek arm of the lake. Both fish were caught while casting spinners. Weeds were a constant problem but according to the fish finder there are a lot of fish in the lake. There is a one Jack Salmon and one Coho limit on the lake per day. We plan on trying again soon as we think the Coho are starting to come in.
Frank

These in from Phil Reed from October 28th:

John can you pass or post the pictures for the guys, my last guide trip thispast Saturday on the Yaquina River, we went 2 for 3 on Chinooks and hookedand released 5 wild Coho's. Great day of fishing. Thanks, Phil

This is from Frank 10/04/09 (Needless to say, "Whoppee, Frank!!!!):

Let word go forth across this land that on this date Frank caught his first salmon in Oregon waters (Yaquina River between Toldedo and Elk City). At approx. 8:20 am a bouncing 14 lb, Chinook sprang forth under the loving eyes of River Angler Guide Phil Reed, witnessed and notarized by Larry Dale. The river was pretty muddy and as far as we know it was the only fish landed in that area among approx. 15 other boats.
Photo of the proud angler follows. Many thanks to Phil for his persistence to make sure that I finally landed my first legal salmon in Oregon waters. Frank

Subject: UPDATE ON BILL

HELLO ALL!

JUST WANTED TO LET YOU KNOW THAT BILL HAD SURGERY AT PROVIDENCE HOSPITAL IN PORTLAND ON THURSDAY. HE HAD A KIDNEY STONE STUCK IN THE TUBE BETWEEN THE KIDNEY AND THE BLADDER, WHICH THEY WERE ABLE TO DEMOLISH WITH A LAZER.

HE ALSO HAS STONES IN BOTH KIDNEYS. THE DR HAD TO PUT A STENT IN BOTH KIDNEYS AND HOPE THAT THE STONES WILL MORE EASILY PASS THROUGH NOW. HE WILL GO BACK IN ABOUT 10 DAYS TO HAVE THE STENTS REMOVED.

THE DR SAYS HE HAS QUITE A FEW STONES IN THE KIDNEYS THAT ARE UNDER THE SURFACE. THERE'S NOTHING THEY CAN DO ABOUT THOSE UNLESS THEY ACTUALLY BREAK THROUGH INTO THE KIDNEYS.

I BROUGHT HIM HOME FRIDAY NIGHT AND HE'S RESTING AND FEELING FAIRLY WELL ... AAH THOSE GOOD DRUGS! HE'LL BE DOWN FOR A BIT (AT LEAST I'LL TRY TO KEEP HIM THAT WAY!)

THANKS FOR THE THOUGHTS AND PRAYERS ... THEY'RE ALL APPRECIATED!

KATHY
