Hi JOHN C SPANGLER,

Community Message has been issued by the Newport Police Department.

Thursday April 29, 2010 1:20 PM PDT

It's seal pup season on the coast. If you come across any marine mammal on the beach call OSP at 800-452-7888.

It's the start of seal pup season on the Oregon coast. Here’s what to do if you come across any marine mammal on the beach:

Call the Oregon State Police: 800-452-7888 or the OSU Marine Mammal Stranding Network Hotline 541-270-6830

• If the animal is alive, keep your distance. Marine mammals can bite when threatened, and they can carry diseases that are dangerous to humans. Keep people and pets away from the animal.

• Observe and report. Note its color, size, general condition and location on the beach. See if there are tags on its flippers, or any other identifying marks. If you have a digital camera, take photos from all sides. These reports and photos can be e-mailed to jim.rice@oregonstate.edu

• Don’t move, touch or disturb the animal, pour water on it or try to feed it.

• If you find a live cetacean (a whale, dolphin or porpoise), report it as soon as possible.

>>> [Fwd: Central Coast Fly Fishers Boy Scout Fly Fishing Merit Badge Program]

Hi Folks >< Check out some of the Good Work recently accomplished by our CCFF Friends in Waldport >< Att’a Boys to Jack Maitlen & All Involved, who made this such a successful CCFF effort !!!           THE HOOK

From Alan Canfield

Here's our report of a successful Boy Scout Merit Badge Program completed by the Central Coast fly Fishers Charter Club in Lincoln County, Oregon.

-------- Original Message --------

Subject:

Central Coast Fly Fishers Boy Scout Fly Fishing Merit Badge Program

The Central Coast Fly Fishers, following the lead of the Federation of
Fly Fishers to share education through fly fishing, hosted a "Fly
Fishing Boy Scout Merit Badge Training Program" that can lead to the
Eagle Scout designation.  CCFF VP Jack Maitlen organized this project,
assisted by Scout Master, Steve Traber.

The scouts, and seven CCFF member/mentors worked together for ten hours
studying and discussing nine of the ten Merit Badge Requirements
outlined in the well written BSA manual,"Fly Fishing."  Subjects covered
were first aid, setting up a fly rod, reel and line, a variety of knots,
fly tying/fly uses, "leave no trace" procedures, proper catch and
release instruction, good sportsmanship related to fly fishing, fly
casting and a review of Oregon fishing regulations.

The scouts had to demonstrate sufficient skill in each area to have
their Merit Badge completion cards signed by their mentors, John
Sanchez, Mike Flaming, Tom Peck, Mac Andrew, Wally Flanagan and Alan
Canfield.

On April 24th the scouts met with CCFF members for a Fish A Long at
Olalla Lake where they completed their training by attempting to catch a
hatchery trout that they were to clean, cook and eat after the fish a
long (one of our members caught a fish that was used for this).

The Scout Master, the Scouts, and the Central Coast Fly Fishers members
who participated felt this is something we would like to do with other
Boy/Girl Scout or student groups.  We recommend this program to fly
fishing clubs everywhere.  The Federation materials and guidance they
give made this project much easier to complete than would have been the
case if we had to do it on our own.

Hi John,

On the ELK HABITAT PLANTING PROJECT >><< I have purchased over 200 shrubs and trees to be planted on our wildlife management area on the South Fork of the Yachats River. About ¾ of them are bareroot plants, the rest in pots. The bareroot plants need to go in ASAP but the potted ones could be done later if necessary; I’m just hoping to get as many in the ground on the 8th as we can. It is necessary to wade the river and carry the plants, tools, etc. up to 1/8 of a mile or so, so it will be somewhat physically demanding. So the more help we can get the better. We will meet at our office in South Beach at 8 AM and carpool to the site. Volunteers should bring waders, leather work gloves, water and lunch. We can also use shovels for planting if they have them.

Thanks again, Tami

Hello LVHFC,

I have just been reading the latest publication of "Volunteer Tracks" sponsored and submitted by ODFW.

What a wonderfully accredited validation to the continuing work done by the Longview Hills Fishing Club.  In all my years working with and volunteering for ODFW, I have never been more proud to be working with a group of people like  the wonderful dedicated members of the Longview Hills Fishing Club (LHFC).  Not only does everyone care for the future of our anadromous fisheries but, each and everyone involved does what he or she can to promote sustainability with our most precious resource.

Thank you John Spangler, and all of your team of officers for your insight and continuing dedication to one of Oregon's most important resources.  Without you and the board of LVHFC so many of ODFW's goals would fall short of expectations.  You taught me years ago to understand  "boots on the ground".  Since that time I have never and will never forget how important those few words are.  You and LVHFC have been the epitome of volunteerism in this wonderful state of Oregon.  I am now and will always be proud to associate with people like you.  Your dedicated and devoted friend.

Team Lone Wolf,

Mike

Public survey on Oregonians' values and beliefs regarding forestry practices

Subject: Public survey on Oregonians' values and beliefs regarding forestry practices

Hi John

Could you forward this survey link within your clubs?  Your responses could provide a better understanding of the public’s values and beliefs regarding Oregon forestry.

Thanks! Christine

Subject: Encourage your contacts to take the Forest Values and Beliefs Survey on the ODF home page

Good morning,

This month, ODF is cooperating with the Oregon Forest Resources Institute (OFRI) to conduct sampling of Oregonians’ values and beliefs regarding forestry and current forest issues. These random, statistically-valid surveys and focus groups will directly inform OFRI’s communications work and both ODF’s and the Board of Forestry’s strategic planning processes.   The Board will receive a report on this work at its September meeting.

In addition, our contractor, David Hibbitts, and Midgall Inc., has established a separate, informal survey that is now posted on ODF’s home page: http://egov.oregon.gov/ODF/.    Please consider taking this five-minute survey yourself and forward the home page link and a request to take the survey to your partner organizations, stakeholders, friends, and family .  All responses will be valuable (in a less scientific way than the other surveys) in helping us understand what Oregonians’ perceptions and opinions are when it comes to forestry.  Other benefits may include getting more citizens engaged in thinking about the importance of our forest resources and perhaps attracting more people to our website where they can  learn more about ODF’s work in addition to taking the survey.

The ODF online survey will be available through April 30.

Thanks!
