• If the animal is alive, keep your distance. Marine mammals can bite when threatened, and they can carry diseases that are dangerous to humans. Keep people and pets away from the animal.
• Observe and report. Note its color, size, general condition and location on the beach. See if there are tags on its flippers, or any other identifying marks. If you have a digital camera, take photos from all sides. These reports and photos can be e-mailed to jim.rice@oregonstate.edu
• Don’t move, touch or disturb the animal, pour water on it or try to feed it.
• If you find a live cetacean (a whale, dolphin or porpoise), report it as soon as possible.
