SCHOONER CREEK TRAP REPORT (31 DEC 2007)

SCHOONER CREEK TRAP REPORT           (31 DEC. 2007)

Hello You All >><< Here is the Hot News on Team Chinook’s Run up to Schooner Creek Trap today ……… Electric Bill, Big Fish Hill & myself found 2 beautiful Male Steelhead in the Trap (1 Native & 1 Hatchery). The trap was in good condition & we cleaned out a bit of trash leaving both gates down & in place ready for service.

There where patches of Black Ice on the hard road into the trap & we found a Sprinkling of Snow on the trees/ground at the trap. Yes, it was very cold, but the sun made it a fun & beautiful day.

HAPPY NEW YEAR TO ALL OF YOU TRAPPERS  !!!!!!!!!                    THE HOOK

P>S>> Hank Bryson reported a Big Stump Slide on the trap entrance road & it sure did slide down on the road. However, there is still enough room to safely pass the slide. The Forest Service may want to bring a Back Hoe in to push it down over the bank. This can probably wait until spring, at which time, they may want to add some dirt to the soft curve area that has also slid a bit.

Update - StatesmanJournal.com

Update - StatesmanJournal.com: "EUGENE — He’s hobnobbed with presidents. His likeness hangs alongside those of Ernest Hemingway and Zane Gray in the Sportfishing Hall of Fame. He’s been “up to his armpits” in mud working to improve salmon habitat, and now he’s up to his eyebrows in politics, having concluded that therein lies the only hope of saving his beloved salmon and steelhead.

He’s Gary Loomis, a white-haired, 66-year-old dynamo whose smiling likeness graces the cover of the current issue of Outdoor Life Magazine, which named him one of 25 “People Who Have Changed the Face of Hunting & Fishing.”"

The Holidays are a good time to reflect on our good fortune - our health, our prosperity, and especially our good friends. On Thursday, December 20th, the Longview Hills Fishing Club had their annual "Holiday Party" which is the last meeting of the year. Christmas time is about good cheer and getting together with friends. We had all of that at our meeting.

Some very nice, and justly deserved, remarks were made about Bud Roark's contributions to the Fishing Club. He was there with his wife, Mary.

Mike Samples made the long-awaited statement that the U-DA-MAN sign (which was feared lost) had been found and was resting comfortably in someone's garage.
Mac Andrew gave an accounting of his and Butch's experience helping ODFW with their fin clipping project.
It was also time for the presentation of the Second Annual Joe Longo Award. This time we were all thrilled to be honoring one of our special members, Bill Furgason. He was honored for his many contributions to the Fishing Club, the time he served on the Board, and his wonderful upbeat attitude which always makes it pleasure to work on a project with him.
Always a "guest of honor", Michelle Longo presented the award to Bill. She also spoke about her father, Joe Longo, and stated he would be proud of what the Longview Hills Fishing Club has become.
We want to thank everyone who attended our meeting, members as well as guests, for making it so special. We are looking forward to a very productive, rewarding and most of all FUN year ahead. Can't wait!!!

Salmon forecasts: good news, bad news situation - OregonLive.com

Salmon forecasts: good news, bad news situation - OregonLive.com: "CLACKAMAS -- The 2008 Willamette River spring chinook salmon run will be so small anglers might not get to fish in some traditional fishing holes and hog lines. But the 2008 Columbia River spring chinook run will be so big, anglers might not care. Biologists for the Oregon and Washington departments of fish and wildlife issued their first-blush 2008 salmon forecasts Tuesday during a meeting of the Northwest Sportfishing Industry Association."

There was quite a bit of damage done to the Schooner Creek Fish Trap after the big windstorm on December 2nd and 3rd. Several of our members joined James Ray of ODFW at the Trap last Friday, December 7th, to clear up debris and repair what we could. It was necessary to clear the road before we even got to the trap. This tree stump on the upper road was our first indication something was wrong. This was the first tree that broke and fell, hitting another tree which eventually hit the third tree that fell on the Trap.

This is a view from below the Trap looking back. This tree hit right across the dam and then onto the Trap.

Two of our "fearless" guys, Hank Bryson and Butch Minich, had chainsaws to cut the big pieces of the tree. Hank literally went "out on a limb" and we had to drag Butch off the dam before he went over (although I was tempted to let him go - it would have been a heck of a photo shot).

I think this sign speaks for itself.

We all agreed it would have been an amazing thing to have watched these trees go down. What do you think, if the trees fell in the forest could anyone hear them? I'm thinking YES. There was damage to one of the gate winches, the trap door was damaged and had to be unbolted to remove it, and there was some other minor damage. We all worked hard but, thanks to John Spangler, we had donuts as a reward to go with our coffee.

If you would like to view more photos of the damage, just go to: http://picasaweb.google.com/barbdud/SchoonerCreekTrapCleanUp120707.

12/06/2007

There were decorations and a Christmas tree so this must have been our Christmas breakfast meeting at the Agate Beach Golfcourse. In the spirit of The Holiday there was much laughter and good cheer and everyone had a good time visiting. Most of the talking centered around our experiences with the recent storm. We learned our friends in Waldport and Lincoln City were without power for days and fared much worse than those of us from Longview Hills. All in all, even though some of us had a little more damage than others, we were all blessed and lucky to get through the storm without any major disaster.

We had some special guests, too. Bud Roark brought his lovely Mary. We were all happy to see Mrs. Strangebones (aka Jeannine Roederer who has just had her second hip operation) up and around. Last, but not least, John Spangler announced the winner of this year's Joe Longo Award and it was our very own, very special Bill Furgason. He was very appreciative. The Award will be given at the next meeting at the Clubhouse on December 20th.

We hope to see you all at the Clubhouse on December 20th with your spouses, friends and neighbors so we can truly make this a Holiday gathering. If you are unable to make the next meeting, the Board of the Longview Hills Fishing Club would like to wish you all a very, very Merry Christmas and a Wonderful and Happy New Year!

John: Maybe you could pass this report on to the club members and Happy Thanksgiving to you, hope you have a good day! The schooner creek trap had one Female Coho, Hoorah-I hear this is the first one since the fish ladder replacement? The Siletz trap had thirteen steelhead, nine male and four females, two of the females were native and continued on up the river. We checked one more trap on drift creek with no fish to report.          Hank

National Geographic News Photo Gallery: Taimen's Last Refuge Is Mongolia

National Geographic News Photo Gallery: Taimen's Last Refuge Is Mongolia: "Three taimen line up at the bottom of northern Mongolia's Eg River. The gigantic fish is the world's largest salmonid—the family of fish that includes salmon and trout. The species can live for more than 50 years, but they grow slowly, not reaching maturity until seven to nine years of age, experts say. Taimen migrate to their spawning habitat and can travel as much as 60 miles (97 kilometers) up- and downstream. But scientists using radio and acoustic tagging have shown that the fish generally stay in one place. "

On October 29th several members of our Fishing Club assisted ODFW with a conservation project where trees were placed in local creeks flowing in to the Yaquina and Alsea Rivers. It was a very interesting endeavor in that these trees were transported by helicopter. The goal is to provide gravel beds, deep pools and rearing ponds with the hope there will be more fish in future years. Our job was to direct traffic to insure no one crossed under the trees as they were being flown over. Thanks to Wayde Dudley and Mac Andrew for providing these pictures.

The Associated Press: Oregon Man Back Fishing Pointless

The Associated Press: Oregon Man Back Fishing Pointless: "STEAMBOAT, Ore. (AP) — Back in 1998 Lee Spencer did two things that changed his relationship with the big steelhead of the North Umpqua River. He agreed to become the first full-time FishWatch guardian of the Big Bend Pool on Steamboat Creek, where as many as 400 large steelhead spend the summer in startlingly plain sight after swimming up the North Umpqua to spawn. And he started cutting the points off the hooks on his flies. Even people who know Spencer wonder why he would want to spend summers on Steamboat Creek 12 miles upstream from the nearest pay phone watching fish wait. 'No one else would do it,' said Joe Howell, owner of the Blue Heron Fly Shop in Idleyld Park. It is even harder to understand why the 57-year-old would cut the points off his hooks and file the wire stump smooth — denying himself the satisfaction of controlling, touching and ultimately setting free something so wild and beautiful. 'I was uncomfortable fishing,' Spencer said. 'I like these fish too much to kill them, even accidentally, or even to stress them out, unduly. 'It took me a month or a month and a half to not want to see the fish up close,' he added. 'I am not proselytizing fishing pointless, but my fishing is as good or better than it ever has been, as far as my own satisfaction.'"

FISH CAUGHT REPORT

Tuesday, October 23, 2007

We are trying something new (now, no groans). To the right you will see a small sign flashing "New". This is a link that takes you to a page called "Fish Trap Reports". We have taken what information we have and have started a journal, or history, of our fish trap experience so we can see how the fish count changed, check on the weather, or just see who was where and when. Make sense? Perhaps not. We will try to keep an accounting in the future of each and every visit to any of the fish traps the Longview Hills Fishing Club helps to service with Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife.

Wayne Hill, Frank Stout, Wayde and I went to the Schooner Creek Fish Trap on Friday, October 19th to install new locks and check on the condition of the trap. There was quite a bit of work done on the ladder and several safety features added to the fish trap. There were no fish but the gate was clogged with leaves and debris which had to be cleaned out. Also, Frank Stout got down in the trap to shovel the gravel which had accumulated. Everything else appeared to be in good shape.

Our regular team duty started on Monday, October 22, 2007. John Spangler, Wayne Hill and I went back to check the trap. The gate was again clogged and Wayne Hill got down in the trap to clean it out. We were surprised how much debris had accumulated since Friday. There still were no fish, but we all agreed it was a such a beautiful spot we could not consider it a waste of time.

We had our general membership meeting on Thursday, October 18th at the Clubhouse. After a quick business meeting we had a quick report on the U-DA-MAN Tournament as well as thanks from members of their Board.

Stephanie Payne, a Riparian Technician with the Lincoln County Soil & Water Conservation District was our guest speaker and talked about invasive plant species in our Coastal area.

Also, James Ray from ODF&W spoke about the traps our Club helps to monitor. We will start again monitoring the Schooner Creek Trap next week. Several volunteers who will be helping at the fish traps stayed after the meeting as James gave us a run-through on the operating and safety instructions for anyone working or visiting the fish traps.

Charlotte Observer | 10/21/2007 | Balloons gave fishing trip a bang: "The picture showed a friend of my friend hoisting a king of about 40 pounds and grinning as if he had just ascended to the throne of, oh, say England. At that special moment, his glee, at least to thousands of saltwater anglers, is highly understandable. Few thrills of inshore fishing on the coast from Oregon Inlet to Beaufort, S.C., match taking kings on relatively light tackle when they are feeding wildly, as they do so often in the fall."

U DA MAN FISHING TOURNAMENT

It was cold the morning of the U DA MAN Fishing Tournament, Sunday, October 14th. Thanks to coffee and donuts everyone got registered and on the water by 9:00 a.m.

It took us some work getting there but, as always, we had a lot of good teamwork to help.

Speaking of teamwork . . .

Our own Kevin McCarthy placed third. Good job, Kevin. But this year the 1st Place award went to a woman!

Everyone worked hard but had a great time. There will probably be more entrants from Longview Hills next year. Can't wait!!!

Kevin Finally Made It!!!

Kevin McCarthy appears to be the new leader in the LVH Fishing Club 2nd Annual Fishing Derby. It is a good thing that they don't have to be fresh bright fish. It looks like Bobber Fishing caught the First Place (to date) fish.
  • 35 pounds, 44 1/2" and 28 1/2 pounds, 39" . . . on light tackle . . . a good day on the water in Lincoln County. . . (isn't it always?)

Good job, Kevin.

WEATHER SPOTTER !!!!

VOLUNTEER WEATHER SPOTTER TRAINING        ( 7 PM to 8:30 PM on 17 Oct. 2007 )

Now here is a Really Cool Volunteer Opportunity >><< How would you like to be “Hooked Up” with the National Weather Service & be trained as an Official Coastal Weather Spotter ?? !!

This training will be held, in Newport, at our Local County Court House, in room 104, on the date/time shown above.

Weather Spotters will be trained to recognize cloud features & other weather phenomena that can be the precursor of severe weather on our coast. We will be assigned a reporting code, which we can use to make Spotting Reports to the National Weather Service. They will compile & assimilate our various Spotter Reports into their Computer Forecasting Models. The end result will be Improved Coastal Weather Forecasts.

We think all Anglers & possibly various LVH Residents would find this Weather Training of interest >><< If you are so inclined >><< Please contact Wayne Hill & he will organize car pools, from our Club House to the Court House, on the evening of the Weather Spotter Training.

This from Dave Dinsmoor re: his visit to the Siletz Fish Trap on Friday, October 5, 2007:

All. I went with Roger last Friday to the Siletz trap. Hardly any traffic on the way up. I knew I was in deep doo doo when we opened the trap door and when Roger looked in he exclaimed "oh crap". There were so many fish that we didn't know where to start so we just dug in. By the time we separated them there were only about 5 Chinook which we passed up stream along with about 6 native steelhead. That left us to process approximately 103 fin clipped steelhead. We left 10 in the trap and dispatched the rest. Only about 5 were under 10 lbs with the rest being in the 11 to 16 lb range. After zonking them we loaded them in the truck and took some up to the gravel beds and threw them in the water. After that Roger had to do a survey on spawning beds off of 120 which took about an hour, maybe less. We couldn't get radio reception and my cell phone was out of range so we took the remaining zonked fish to the Siletz food bank in hopes of someone being there to accept the 56 fish left in the tank. Luckily there were people there so we didn't have to go back to the gravel beds to dump them. All in all it was a very long and tiring day. My shoulders were sore from netting all of those fish. I got home around 5. TCM GO DUCKS
For those of you who haven't read the results of the Alsea Fishalong on your e-mail:

Alsea Fishalong 9/27/07: We had 13 fisherman in 4 boats participate in the Alsea Fishalong last Thursday. The guide, Ryan Miner, had Bernie Cooperstein, Dave Dinsmoor, Wayne Hill, and John Pitaressi, Brian had Dick Garvey and Dick Billingham with him, Alan Canfield had Mac Andrew and Butch Minich, and Frank Stout was with his brother-in-law Rich. It was a good thing that almost everyone hit the water a little after 6AM while it was dark, because as the sun came up the boat traffic looked like an LA freeway on steroids. Dragging dead herring around was the order of the day (a few Blue Fox spinners were seen in use here and there), but fish production was truly slow. Dave Dinsmoor was the big winner with a 28lb Chinook, but the rest of the fleet had that faint odor of skunk! Also, as we came by, Ryan did emphasize that he might be " THE BEST GUIDE ON THE RIVER" as Dave held up the big fish - no argument from our boat!. I'm sure Dave will be glad to share his catch experience with us at his first opportunity. Very few fish were seen caught, and the best report heard was about one guide who claimed he hooked 5, and boated 3 using Blue Foxes. Inspite of the slow fishing, the cool morning weather cooperated and warmed up to a comfortable level as the day progressed.

Corvallis Gazette Times - Venture

Corvallis Gazette Times - Venture: "Here in the Pacific Northwest, the presence and numbers of fish in the ocean are dependent on a variety of factors. Two of the most important are also the most basic: the rotation of the earth and our ever-present coastal winds. Our coastal winds, which generally come from a southwest direction during the fall and winter, shift to a northwest approach in the spring, and stay there, with brief interludes, until fall. The combination of the earth’s rotation and the northwest wind cause a spring/summer near-ocean process scientists call upwelling. Upwelling roils up millions of tons of gooey material from the bottom of the ocean and sends it upward near the coastline. Much of this goo is alive, just inactive in the cold, dark depths. Once the mucky brew gets higher in the water column and is lit by sunlight, all that living material gets real active real fast. The little plants (phytoplankton) start doing their photosynthesis thing, bloom and spread all over the place. The little critters (zooplankton) start moving around and bumping into each other, which always leads to breeding (this is why your mother never wanted you to dance close) and reproduction (which is what your mother was afraid of)."

Charley Currey, editor of "The View From The Hill", has found it necessary to make some changes in the newsletter in order to cut down on costs of publishing. Unfortunately, "The Line" column is one of the things that must go. As I already had the column prepared for this month, I am going to publish it here. Thanks to all who took a few moments to read the column over the past months.

THE LINE

We had our first meeting of September with breakfast at the Agate Beach Golf Course. There was great conversation, some committee reports and, most importantly since we are a fishing club, some reports on where the elusive salmon could be caught. Frank and Brian gave a rundown on their fishing trip to Canada, and Wayde reported on his San Diego trip. Wayde Dudley will be the guest speaker at the meeting on September 20th, talking about gun safety.

We had a work party on September 11th at Hebo to help the Forest Service put together the new baffles that will replace the old ones we removed from the Schooner Creek Fish Trap last month. There will be another work party on September 28th and we will need as many volunteers as possible at this one to “put the trap back together”. Hopefully, the fish will notice the difference and be happy . . .

MEMBER OF THE MONTH: As long as we’re talking about the Schooner Creek Fish Trap, I think it would be a great time to thank all the volunteers who have given so much in checking the trap this past year as well as those who have given their time and effort at the work parties. We should be proud of the effort put forth and the service we have provided. Good job, everybody!!!

A quick hello to The Hook, John Spangler. He is back up and running (well, almost) and we’re all glad he’s doing so well.

Be sure and come to our meetings – you don’t have to be a member to attend. Check our website or take a look at The Wall in the Clubhouse.

We had a work party on Tuesday (September 11th) at Hebo to help the Forest Service put together the new baffles that will replace the old ones we removed from the Schooner Creek Fish Trap last month. There was lots of measuring, lifting and hauling and our group didn't do too bad for a bunch of old guys. If you wonder why I am included in these work groups, well, sometimes I do too. However, they needed a "Shadow Thrower" which is someone who blocks the sun so they can see the marks on the boards to cut. I throw a mean shadow. Also, there is the cord holder to make sure the cord doesn't get in the way of the saw. I think I was good enough at this that I could put it on my resume if I ever have to look for another job (God forbid). Also, who else would be there to record our good deeds and keep us honest that isn't busy working? Anyway, that justifies my need.

A note, however. We worked really hard removing these baffles from the Fish Trap and we worked pretty hard yesterday. Everyone is in agreement that installing them will be the most difficult job. Hopefully, we will get a good turnout when the date is set for this project as the more we have on the "assembly line", the easier it will be for everyone.

newsobserver.com | Angler finds moving by kayak is way to go

newsobserver.com | Angler finds moving by kayak is way to go: "Jim Foct looked at the 2-foot waves blowing across Pamlico Sound and was undaunted. 'We're going to catch some fish today,' he said. A 20-knot headwind whipped his words away as he loaded a bright orange kayak with rods, bait, tackle, a cooler for the day's lunch and a stringer for the day's catch. Fighting the steady wind and washboard chop, he pushed his kayak off the beach at Oregon Inlet Fishing Center and paddled toward the Bodie Island Lighthouse. The weather was far from perfect, but Foct, 45, gets only one day off each week, and he spends it fishing."

Outdoors - StatesmanJournal.com: "The last day of April wrapped up a successful year at the Schooner Creek fish trap operated by Fish and Wildlife and the Forest Service with a lot of grunt work contributed by 16 members of the Newport-based Long View Hills Fishing Club, a representative of the Mid-Coast Chapter of the Association of Northwest Steelheaders, along with several nonaffiliated volunteers beginning the past November."

This in from Frank Stout (Ducks). We will look forward to hearing more about this trip at the Thursday breakfast meeting.

Hi Guys,
Here are few photos taken during Brian's and my fishing trip to Vancouver Is., BC. #1 is Brian aboard the ferry from the mainland to Vancouver Is. #2 is a shot of one of the multiple streams we crossed. They were beautiful and the water was crystal clear. #3 is leaving Tahsis. #4 is Brian upon our arrival at Rodgers Floating Fishing Resort. #5 Some visitors arrived by boat plane. There were as many as 20+ boats fishing the same areas at any one time. #6 is small but my first salmon. #7 is of a sea otter. We watched porpoises, eagles and otter play in the area. #7 is John, Brian's cousin, with his 17 lb salmon. Unfortunately is was the largest catch of the trip but we let the big ones get away for another day. #8 The sunsets weren't too bad either. #9 is a sail boat we passed on the way home. #10 shows one of several salmon farms that we passed. Had a great time and my sincere thanks to Brian for inviting me.

As most of you know, Brian and Frank recently went on a fishing trip to Vancouver Island, Canada. Here is a brief accounting of their trip. Don't miss our next meeting, September 6th, so you can see their pictures.

Vancouver Island Fishing Trip:

Brian Hudson, Frank Stout and John Staats (Brian's cousin) fished Esperanza Inlet about halfway up the West Coast of Vancouver Island. We stayed at Rodgers Fishing Lodge, a floating camp in Port Eliza Inlet just a couple miles from the Pacific. It was a "bring your own boat package for 4 days/nights. The group left Sat, 8/25, overnited at the Everett, WA Navy Inn, made the ferry from Tsawassen to Namaimo the next morning, spent another night at Campbell River, then drove to Tahsis where the boat was launched. We had a 21 mile run to the lodge through spectacular fjiord-like scenery, and were put up three to a room at the lodge. Day one we fished a couple different areas, lost one big chinook and caught a couple small ones, learned to run the downriggers, and learned a little about boat handling and keeping things upright on the way back through some 8-9 ft swells. John was relaxing in the back while Frank and I white-knuckled our way home! The next day it rained, we fished, and it rained, and we fished, and it rained - nothing stayed dry. Day three we had issues with downrigger wire and lost some equipment, Frank caught another salmon and rock fish and we hired a guide for half-day to see if we could improve our luck. Day 4 we made a high speed (well as fast as the boat will go) run back to Tahsis for some more anchovie helmets and down rigger clips) and John immediately picked up a 17lb Chinook when we got back. All in all the fishing didn't turn out as productive as we hoped, but the traveling up and back went extremely well, timing turned out to be about right for motels, ferries, boat travel, etc., and the scenery is second to none - absolutely spectacular. More about the trip at the next meeting - Frank has pics.

chinook salmon fishing

chinook salmon fishing: "Each fall, top fishing guides from throughout the Northwest tow their boats to Oregon's Tillamook Bay, where five of the world's most fertile salmon rivers empty into the ocean. Thousands of big, chrome-bright fall chinook stack up in the bay and stage until the major autumn rains draw them into the Wilson, Trask, Tillamook, Kilchis and Miami rivers to spawn. New fish continue to arrive in the bay for four months."

adn.com | life : A small snag in a good fishing trip: "The bobber was an insult to Rabbit Lake. A The mountain biker implied an insult to me. 'There it is,' he said. 'Go get it.' 'I'm waiting for it to get warmer,' I said. 'That water's not gonna get any warmer.' He misunderstood. I knew the water wouldn't get warmer. I'd gone for a bracing dip the evening before. I was waiting for the sun to get higher behind the Suicide Peaks. I wanted to soak up some heat against the shock of diving in for the bobber and hook. Bright blue, the morning was still too young to have gathered much warmth."
