New ‘green’ gasoline can be problematical for boaters: The Register-Guard, Eugene, Ore.

New ‘green’ gasoline can be problematical for boaters: The Register-Guard, Eugene, Ore.: "This may be great news for the environment, but the Oregon Marine Board points out there’s a potential glitch for boat owners.

The problem is “ethanol is a solvent, and will loosen sludge in your tank and fuel lines, clogging fuel filters, carburetors and injectors,” according to a Marine Board news release."

Memoir tells of the author’s difficult relationship with his college-bound child and the Alaskan adventure they shared: The Register-Guard, Eugene, Ore.: "To save money, father and son went to the Togiak National Wildlife Refuge without a guide, which can cost as much as $1,000 a day for a party of two. But that made the trip a lot riskier.

The dangers became clear the second day when Ureneck and Adam rounded a bend and came upon a 1,000-pound brown bear standing knee-deep with her cub in a narrow section of the river. A tense standoff ensued along the shore, with Ureneck aiming his shotgun at the bear as she stood so close he could hear and smell her."

Columnists - StatesmanJournal.com

Columnists - StatesmanJournal.com: "Case in point: The Aviva Sports' 'Fishin' Buddy.'

It's a remote-controlled model boat equipped with 'hooks, bobbers and fishing line.'

The idea is that you zip the boat out on the pond, then once a fish hits, 'reel' it in by directing the boat back to you.

According to the press kit, the Fishin' Buddy can battle a fish as big as 2 pounds into submission.

My sense is that the Fishin' Buddy isn't legal is Oregon, one of the cardinal rules being that 'rods and lines be closely attended.'"

MailTribune.com: 1,000 Casts & Counting

MailTribune.com: 1,000 Casts & Counting: "Standing glumly in frigid water with ice building in your fly rod's guides — firing cast after cast toward an apparently mythical creature you don't believe is out there — may not be the time to stop and ask yourself, 'How many casts does it take to catch a steelhead in Oregon?' There are more than a few numb-toed souls who will tell you that the finicky steelhead they stalk each winter come, on average, once for every 1,000 casts."

MARINE RESERVE ISSUES

A MARINE RESERVE NEAR YOU >>><<< OTTER ROCK ?? !!

A section of Coastal Water near Otter Rock is being put forth as a possible Designated Marine Reserve Site ……..

To that end >>< a Near Shore Action Team, comprised of various individuals in Depoe Bay, are soliciting input from Commercial, Charter & Sport Anglers.  Everyone with a vested interest is invited to attend 2 of the following Open Public Meetings:

10 January   (Thursday evening …. 7 to 8 PM at the Depoe Bay Community Hall)      or

17 January   (Thursday evening …. 7 to 8 PM at the England Marine Conference Room)

This is a very important opportunity for all “Near Shore Voices” to be heard & coalesced into meaningful feedback to State Level Decision Makers. Many of these decisions will have significant ramifications on what our coastal fisheries will look like for our Grandchildren…….

Get involved in this important Issue & attend 1 of the meetings. This is a really great opportunity for us all to learn more about this potentially beneficial Future Fisheries Enhancement Action.

The first meeting of the LVH Fishing Club was held January 3rd at the Agate Beach Golf Club. We enjoyed breakfast, visited with friends and had a good meeting. Great way to start the New Year.

Hank Bryson gave a quick report on the Siletz Fish Trap and was lauded as our "Hero of the Month" for volunteering for almost every day in January. We all appreciate it, Hank!

Our most pleasant surprise of the morning was the standup comedy of Tom Roederer. His routine of the "Tylenol Tango" had all of us laughing. Thanks for the smiles, Tom.

We welcomed our newest member, Linda Reed. She is a true "fisherwoman" and does all us other women proud. Welcome, Linda.

The winner of the annual Salmon Derby was once again Kevin McCarthy. Wayde Dudley presented him with his certificate and displayed the new plaque with his name on it (again). John also offered his congratulations.

Second place winner was Dave Dinsmoor. He also received a certificate. Good job, guys! Both winners will receive a guided steelhead fishing trip donated by Ryan Miner. It is a great reward, Ryan, and should be incentive to all of our fishermen to win next year. Thanks. (Note: Ryan offers anyone in the LVH Fishing Club a steelhead fishing trip for $85. As this is about half the regular price, it is a great deal and we appreciate the offer, Ryan).
Sorry some of you couldn't make this meeting and hope we see you at the Golf Course for our first meeting in February. Also, don't forget our next meeting January 17th at the LVH Clubhouse. Phil Hager, member of the Federation of Fly Fishers and an expert on invasive aquatic species, will be our guest speaker.
