FISHING ON THE YAQUINA 03/04/09

Sturgeon fishing on the Yaquina River

Brian, Frank and Wayde spent most of Wednesday, 3/4/09, on the Yaquina River in pursuit of the reclusive white sturgeon. The day started with breakfast at the Newport Cafe around 7 am. We drove to the Toledo Airport and launched the boat at the public ramp. It was cool, breezy and looked like we could expect some showers. We began fishing with mud shrimp that were hand selected by Frank near HMSC in South beach. We started at buoy 34 and then tried around 31 and 43. No bites except for nibbling sculpins. Near noon we moved upriver to the bend near the Fred Wahl facility. During a bait check Frank discovered he had a sturgeon on his line. He played with it for the required time (2 min or so) then pulled it to the boat where Brian netted it. The fish looked very close to the necessary length of 38". Carefully stretching the fish out on the floor Brian and Frank measured the fish while Wayde recorded the event with his camera. The fish was 38" long--exactly. Not 1/8 over, not 1/8 under but 38". Much fish talk ensued about the first sturgeon in the Yaquina, etc. No more fish that day but it was another quality outing on the water with good friends.
