Choosing The Proper Fly Fishing Leader and Tippet by Cameron Larsen - Fly Fishing Articles:

by Cameron Larsen
Selecting the correct tapered leader and tippet for the type of fishing you are about to do is crucial. Nothing can spook fish quicker than an oversized tippet for the particular situation. On the other hand, and undersized tippet can result in the fly fisher losing their trophy before they even get a photo opportunity. We will start at the very basic of leader and tippet selection and then get more specific, and hopefully conclude with enough information so we'll always have the proper leader and tippet for all upcoming fishing scenarios.

Second season
for trout

Published: Tuesday, May 23, 2006
Memorial Day weekend marks the start of the traditional camping and boating season. This year it's also the opening of the state's "second" trout season, covering most rivers and streams that flow out of the Coast Range.
Those waters are kept closed for a month after the general trout season opener in late April so juvenile salmon and steelhead have a chance to migrate unhindered by anglers. The coast trout streams open Saturday.

You've come to the right place. F&H News' writers search out the areas in your backyard every two weeks to bring you the best of what's out there.

"SALMON SOULUTIONS"

Fight for our families, and our future Each year fewer salmon and steelhead swim in the Columbia and Snake Rivers and their tributaries. Fewer fish means fewer recreational opportunities, disappearing jobs and less money for our businesses and families in river communities like Ilwaco, Hood River and Bend. Now, some of our leaders are blaming our fishing families for low salmon and steelhead returns. It's just not right. Dams are responsible for killing as many as 90% of our salmon every season — while all fishing combined approaches less than 10%.

JUNE MEETING & EVENT SCHEDULE

1 JUNE @ 9 AM General Membership Meeting with a guest presenter in the form of Tom Roederer (The Bear Ambassador). Tom, as many of you know, is one of our own and he is actively involved with ODFW as a volunteer. He will be giving us a Power Point Presentation on “Living with Bears”. This is valuable information we all should be aware of considering that we have an occasional Bear Visitor in our Longview Hills Community. In addition, this will be the day that the Special LVH Fishing Club Ball Caps will be made available to all members. Additional caps will be available for sale to all those who have not already placed an order.

14 JUNE @ 9 AM This will be our day to take a Tour of the US Coast Guard Station here in Newport. All members are to meet at the Club House and Big Fish will organize car pool drivers to get us down to the USCG Station on/before 10 AM. We will be given a Power Point Presentation on the Station’s Mission followed by a walk thru tour of their Crash Boats.

15 JUNE @ 9 AM In place of our regularly scheduled General Membership Meeting, Big Fish will be coordinating our June Litter Pick-up morning at the Big Creek Reservoir. Please watch for more information on our Web Site regarding this event. As you may know we did our first Litter Patrol last month and it was fun & very successful. The Club has endorsed doing this Voluntary Community Service Event monthly. We hope to get at least 8 members on each litter patrol so we can get the job done rapidly. The more the better.
I'm not able to work on the club calendar at the top of the web site at this time, having a slight problem, so I have pasted the June happenings on the main text until I get the calendar going again. Thanks for your patience.

At the Thursday Morning Longview Hills Fishing Club Meeting we were honored to have a guest speaker Dr. Laurie Wehkamp, a NOAA Biologist who works out of the Hartfield Science Center here in Newport. She has been a Biologis for the past 13 years. She gave a very interesting talk about the research on the costal salmon and what is happening with the salmom under these present times. We thank her very much for taking time to come to our meeting and for those club members that attended. I know we all left with alot more information about the status of the coastal salmom. More on the Calendar

Examples placed on the calendar for you to get an idea of how it works. We chose a few of the dates posted in a below article and put them on the calendar using different color schemes. We also expanded the calendar to show the month view instead of a week view (use the scroll bar on the right of the calendar to move the dates up or down). We used the dates that were put in a previous article below here.

To find out more about what is happening on any of the activities posted on the calendar just click on the activity and a pop-up window will appear describing the entire event. Notice too that the link to the described event is active and will take you to the page it describes.

Now you may begin to see the possibilities for your new calendar. All you need is a volunteer to enter the events that are important to the Fisherman’s Club. I will teach whoever will volunteer to keep it up how to do it.

Before we needed to call for medical assistance, I suggested I would put the "Question" before someone who could give us a definitive answer. Here is the response I got from the USCG Station Operations Officer. The "difference" is 65 feet. In the Coast Guard & Navy, vessels are called Boats up to the length of 65 feet. At 66 feet they are formally named and called Ships. If you really want to stump the guys ask them which 4 boats are the only ones in the Coast Guard under 65 feet that are named ???? It can also be passworded so that only those with the password can change it. AS I receive instructions as to how you want it ... I will set it up for you. RT

Every spring, the local bear population comes out of hibernation looking for a meal after a long sleep. Occasionally, they wander into populated areas to find food that might be left available - any food. These are not tame animals and they are potentially dangerous.
Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife will present the residents of Lincoln County with the opportunity to learn how to live with local black bears.

"FISHING CLUB MEETING.................BIG TURN OUT"

(click on picture to enlarge, then arrow back)
This morning at the Newport Agate Beach Golf course we had a very good turn out for the Longview Hills Fishing Club breakfast, we also had a guest speaker. With the first picture our President John Spangler is already for his trip to the Big Sky Country next month, he was just trying his fly fishing outfit out, yes there were a few comments made, but I rather now repeat them. The quest speaker was from Northwest Steelheaders Group and he gave a wonderful speech, we thank him. Also Ron Thomas was invited by our Club President and was voted in to join our club, Ron is the Web Master for the LVh's web site and has done so much with this site, Thank you Ron. We even had some of the wifes and other guest joining us and hope they will come back, the door is always open, for either new members or people who just want to listen in.

Fish Wrapper

A fish wrapper is usually a chunk of old newspaper that you roll a fish up in and take it home in.. Coming soon a new addition to this website ... an aditional page with the president's monthly newsletter... The name ? "The Fish Wrapper"

Charles is working on it now.. expect to see it come into reality soon. Also, I suspect John Spangler and Wayne Hill may write in both soon as they have just been given them the means to do so. If anybody else would like to write on this site ask John or Wayne (not John Wayne) or Charles how to do it.

Oregon Fishing and Hunting News Outdoor Sportsmen's Magazine:
Outlook bright for ocean salmon...........

NEWPORT ...... The Pacific Fishery Management Council recommended lengthy coho and Chinook seasons for sport anglers, while closing much of the coast to commercial fishing.
'Right now the media is saying 700 miles of coastline is going to be closed and that's just not accurate,' says Trey Carskadon, president of the Northwest Sportfishing Industry Association. 'There is going to be a good opportunity for the recreational fishery, that's for sure.

Oregon Fishing Report from TGF:

Oregon's most complete and accurate fishing update Updated for April 28th, May 4th, 2006
Willamette Valley/Metro - Although not much attention is being directed to the Columbia River, sturgeon has drawn the attention of many anglers and people are finding results. Anglers fishing in the gorge drew a keeper per boat over the weekend and the stretch from Portland to Longview is averaging about a keeper for every 6 boats. Effort was also higher in the estuary near Astoria but will likely drop after May 1st when a short term retention closure takes place through the 12th of May. Smelt remains the bait of choice in the gorge but shrimp rules the shallower mudflats in the estuary this time of year.
